10 AM

Mountain Bike 3:00:00 [2] 37.0 mi (4:52 / mi)

Into Settle from Malham Tarn to meet Garth. Then with him up to Ribblehead, down to Ingleton and back to Settle on back roads. I thought him on road bike me on mountain bike would even things up nicely but i was soon struggling to keep up. Bailed out of the climb back to Malham and got a ride in Garth's car.
3 PM

Note

Massage with Richard. Concentrating on lower back, left glut and hamstring.

Wednesday Dec 30, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Had considered cycling to Malham today but thought better of it. Not sure my back would cope and the wind and rain helped reinforce my decision.
11 AM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

Usual plus some stretching and back exercises.

Tuesday Dec 29, 2015 #

11 AM

Mountain Bike 25:00 [2] 5.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Lap of Yateholme to test me and the bike. Bike good. My back okish.
12 PM

Terrain running 1:18:00 [3] 8.0 mi (9:45 / mi)
shoes: V J Supra (2)

From top of Holme Moss. Dead Edge End, Snailsden, Ramsden Clough and back home. Hamstring still bothering me but put in perspective by the fact that our 40-something next door neighbour died over Christmas.

Monday Dec 28, 2015 #

11 AM

Trail running 1:00:00 [2] 5.5 mi (10:55 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw(2)

Family run from home. Over the hill to Arrunden then into Hades woods. Donald and i did an extra loop so we could chase the girls back down. Back much better but left hamstring still troublesome.

Sunday Dec 27, 2015 #

10 AM

Note

Big family walk from home. Black Hill via Isle of Skye and pennine way, Holme Moss, Yateholme Edge, Ramsden Clough. Good day out: about 12 miles in 5 hours. Very wet underfoot. Hip/back quite a bit better today.

Saturday Dec 26, 2015 #

2 PM

Trail running 29:00 [3] 3.0 mi (9:40 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Shuffle around Digley. Watercourses in places never seen before. Stiff/soreness is now all on the left side around the hip and lower back. A real struggle to do anything but thought i should at least try and keep moving. A hot bath after helped but all seized up again peeling sprouts.

Friday Dec 25, 2015 #

Note

No chance of running today. My sore/stiff back and hamstring have converged on my left hip since yesterday's run. Struggling to move around the house. Back feeling better though so.optimistic that this might be progress. Trying to do what stretching and rollering i can.

Thursday Dec 24, 2015 #

11 AM

Trail running 1:12:00 [3] 8.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Tuesday Dec 22, 2015 #

12 PM

Road running 43:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:36 / mi)

Orienteering race 55:39 [4] 5.5 mi (10:07 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212 (2)

EPOC Christmas event, Newmillerdam.
Brown course, 7.9km. 220m.
10th place, 8 mins down on Josh Beech.
My back had seized up again this morning and didn't have the time to loosen it as I managed yesterday. Consequently I set off very much hampered by my back and left hamstring. Got caught early by Rowan Capper and spent the rest of the race chasing him. Frustrating experience.

Trail running 56:07 [4] 6.5 mi (8:38 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212 (2)

Holmfirth Harriers Tinker Cup.
Spent the morning doing back stretches and was just able to do a decent hamstring stretch before heading to Honley. Nervous how my back would react I set off very slowly and consequently spent quite a bit of time queuing for stiles early on. Sped up and finished with a time only a couple of minutes slower than last year. Back seizing up again afterwards but happy to still be in one piece. 19th place, 10 mins down on Chris Law.

Back much the same again today. Struggling to bend down, stretch hamstrings etc.
various back stretches as recommended by Kim.

Thursday Dec 17, 2015 #

8 AM

Note

Golf with Andy, Gary and Paul. Had to abandon after 13 holes due to my back. Unable to swing properly. 16 Stableford points after 9 holes.
1 PM

Note

Session with Kim. She had a go at loosening off my tight back, gluts and hamstring. Some immediate improvement and back mobility exercises to do.
She also suggested I need to run a bit more often. Increase to 4 or 5 runs a week.
3 PM

Trail running 27:00 [3] 3.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Digley. Back tight but bearable. Some back stretches afterwards.

Wednesday Dec 16, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

My back stiffened up more as the day went on yesterday. Eased off a bit over night but still struggling to bend down.
R Achilles not bad this morning, just very slightly niggly. Hopeful that I might not have done anything serious. A day or two off minimum to let things settle.

Tuesday Dec 15, 2015 #

8 AM

Note

Golf. Pro's mid week comp. 34 Stableford points (18/16).
I have a very stiff lower back. It started yesterday and I've no idea why. It's a problem bending down and carrying my clubs but didn't seem to adversely affect my swing.
2 PM

Trail running 1:26:00 [3] 9.0 mi (9:33 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw(2)

Digley-Magdelen Road-Meltham-Wilshaw-Wolfstones-Upperthong.
Back OK once running but not able to stretch hamstrings due to stiff back. Also worried I might have tweaked my R Achilles on one of the hard descents. No chance of garage circuits tonight.

Trail running 1:00:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw(2)

YHOA Junior Squad training Ecclesall Woods. After a cold, wet and miserable hour of shadowing I escaped for a run to warm up. Through Eccy Woods, up Limb Valley, a loop of Lady Cannings and back. Feeling surprisingly good.

12 PM

Road running 44:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Golf course flooded again so went for my first run since Wharncliffe. Worried how my R Achilles might react but actually it was my L hamstring which was the main problem. Very wet: lots of puddle dodging around Yateholme.
10 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

R calf weaker than L.

Tuesday Dec 8, 2015 #

Orienteering race 1:13:47 [4] 6.0 mi (12:18 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212 (2)

SYO regional, Wharncliffe .
Short Brown, 7.5km.
'Wharncliffe: the best area in England outside the Lake District'
This may once have been true, but not many would agree now. Maybe it would be better in the spring after a hard winter but it's certainly tough at this time of year.
When I saw the course lengths it was obvious to me they were too long. Early finishers (and the greater number of non-finishers) confirmed my suspicions. I therefore set off expecting an epic. I wasn't disappointed. I tried to use the tracks where I could but it was #11 before I got a chance. Apart from the length, the courses were very well planned.
I lost time at #8 (too low) and #18 (didn't look around the right side of the boulder; I really should read my descriptions!). Maybe just enough to have broken 70, but pleased enough to be the only one on the course to break 10mpk.

Wharncliffe was my lowest score and probably my best result. Very wierd scoring system...

3 PM

Trail running 38:00 [3] 4.0 mi (9:30 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Digley with Phil and Simon.

Thursday Dec 3, 2015 #

8 AM

Note

Golf. 4 ball better ball with Roy against Andy and Paul. We won 2 and 1. My game fell apart between holes 9 and 14 but good otherwise.
2 PM

Mountain Bike 30:00 [2] 5.0 mi (6:00 / mi)

First time on my bike for a while and this was a classic example of why I prefer running. Digley, Yateholme then Ramsden Road which has been badly washed out by last weekend's heavy rain. The jarring on the rutted track caused my back wheel to come off. The derailleur then went into the spokes and bent. My trying to bend it back caused it to snap off. I only had a new derailleur in August. Back to the repair shop.
