Note
(rest day)

A proper rest day.
Achilles not bad but needs a day or two to settle back down to how it was pre POM. Learning how to avoid speeding instead :(

Uneventful journey home.

Orienteering race 36:43 [4] 4.0 mi (9:11 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw (3)

POM Day 4, Paiol-Sines
M55 5.5km 215m
Achilles only very slightly worse than yesterday so decided to race as 3rd overall was achievable. Succeeded in this but uncertainty (at time of writing) what happened to the leader overall. He didn't use his allocated start time but (as far we know) started early in order to catch his flight. No result for him today available but assume that he ran quick enough to maintain his lead. Clive was fastest of the rest with me in 5th, 1:30 behind. Not sure how close the overall points were but happy with 3rd.
Achilles now getting 4 days off running. Fingers crossed. ..

Edit: Turns out that Clive did win the stage with Conny Forsberg in 2nd. I was therefore 6th but held on to 3rd overall.

POM Day 3, Paiol-Sines
M55 5.3km 215m
Achilles slightly iffy this morning so walk to start, gentle warm up and steady start. No soreness for most of the race so sped up towards the end as I realised a good result was possible.
Still a bit surprised to take the win, albeit by only 3 seconds from Clive. 10 mins warm down.

Orienteering race 55:46 [4] 6.0 mi (9:18 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw (3)

POM Day 2 Santo Andre and Santa Cruz
M55 8.8 km 205m 12 controls
Proper Long Distance. Early start so not too hot but will definitely have tracked up in places later on, particularly on #10 to #11. One 2.5km leg which was just a big track run. Somewhat worried how my Achilles will react. 10 mins icing it in the swimming pool afterwards.
5th place again, 6 mins down on Conny Forsberg.

Saturday Feb 22 #

1 PM

Orienteering race 28:52 [4] 3.0 mi (9:37 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

POM Day 1. Santiago do Cacem.
M55 5.2km 165m.
Hilly middle distance urban race. Quite hot, especially compared to back home. Looking after my calves I was very cautious particularly running downhill. The odd sub-optimal route but less than a minute lost in total. Quite happy with 5th place (3rd Brit) 2:40 behind Conny Forsberg.
Bring on the proper orienteering tomorrow ;-)
