The other route I had in my head for Gaer - going straight to the bottom from home, to the top, and then across to the Ridgeway to finish.

Felt quite hard today - not sure if warmth, slight breeze, or general tiredness causing it but makes a good excuse not to try and do too much over the long weekend.

Could tell it's not Tuesday by the complete absence of any traffic anywhere.

Tredegar Park and Gaer Fort for a fairly pleasant 10k. Better handling the weather today but still sweaty.

Went through the temporary barriers to do a bit of exploring where the new tarmac path is going in in the corner of TP- enough other people had come through it for me not to feel bad.

Appreciative of the bridge being open now so that I can string together routes like this that are mostly traffic free (and as it's Tuesday, a lot of it about)

Heart rate didn't drop out (much) on the hill today - which is a nice change.

Gaer to get the other legend. People around here really don't go off road or up hills.

Sunny and very warm, not much wind - but still very wet and slippery under the trees at the bottom so had to be cautious.

Legs not going terribly well today - so most of the run was smooth rather than swift.

Nice slow walk up the Ridgeway after. Saw the top of the Skirrid which I didn't see yesterday.

Feeling quite tired today and not keen to go out in this weather so it was to be a bit of a recovery run. From below the canal at Goytre, loop to get 4 more new squares. Wind behind going out made pace good for very little effort, but then was hard work all the way back from Llanover, not helped by the canal towpath being quite slippery. In the end a good pace and my legs seemed a lot happier with it than they did yesterday.

Low cloud meant couldn’t see Blorenge or Sugar Loaf, and just got the bottom of Skirrid. Glad I did my day out yesterday when the sky was fairly clear.

Had to get a long way away today to break out of the mindset of staying at home - so today was about driving, listening to music, looking at views - with the running coming second. Went for mid Wales as once north of Brecon start getting into my part of the world and I’ve spent so little time stopped there recently nice to go back.

Had a rough route planned in my head and then went and ignored most of it and went down the footpaths I found or guessed without having a map. From Llandrindod lake - wanted to go to “Shaky Bridge” that’s on the OS map - and it wasn’t anything special. Views good though, and as coming down into the valley saw some people at the top of the hill on the other side so thought I’d go up there too. Definitely a “walk” hill for me at the moment - and found the climb quite tough, and slipping on the wet ground in my trainers too. A very satisfying peak though, 360 degree visibility and a very pointy peak to stand on the top off. Probably a good place to put a castle.

Route back was a mix of luck and judgement that it did turn into a marked footpath. Two climbs, neither particularly steep, but really struggled on both of them. May have been into the wind but it didn’t feel strong at those times so not much of an excuse. At the top of last hill went for footpath option as it looked nice and had a gate to give me a bit of a breather - and got me a new trig without having known it was there. Little bits at the end to make 10k as was close, but not so keen by now as stomach had gone a bit on the last descent, and had been expecting it to.

Walked around the town a bit after - which was cold and wet. Drove back via a big loop past the Fforest Inn to see more hills that I want to explore some day. Good to see Llandegley airport is back to normal after being missing last time I came this way. Going back 200 years or so, the sole Welsh contingent in my family lived there - I suspect the airport, and everything else are practically unchanged from back then.

Short route as I really should be making the most of less-limited freedom from tomorrow.

Fairly windy, and very slippery under the trees where it was wet - so not a lot of incentive to push today. To be honest, not a day I would have run if I wasn't going every day.

Optical HR having a pretty terrible day today, no matter how much readjusting - max HR 147 on some downhill section. Result is that I was 40% behind usual for daily "activity" so had to do an extra 30 minutes walking around on top of run and 30 min walk at lunchtime, and Strava "fitness" has dropped again to 59 (v. 107 on 26/3/20). I really am getting shockingly unfit with all these lockdowns!

Incidentally, the same thing telling me I'm getting unfit also tells me on current fitness I'm capable of doing <17:30 5k if I actually put any effort into running...

Similar route to before - this being the basis of what I'm expecting to become the summer route. Still a little damp under the trees on Gaer, which I wasn't expecting - but also a freshly burned section by the railway which wasn't burned yesterday.

Finding the climb tough today. It's only 40m but does seem harder than the Ridgeway, maybe because of the wind. Watch heart rate also didn't like the hill and dropped from 150 to 120 at exactly the same part of the climb that it usually does - and then under read by about 30bpm for the rest of the run.

A break from recent tradition and going to Gaer instead of up the Ridgeway now I've probably peaked my "local legend" count (74, I think - but maintaining 85/90 on another closer to home).

Out on Risca Road, down Western Ave and along bottom of Gaer and then up across the football pitch as per usual route from late summer. A few wiggles and bits later on to make it 10k. Not going hard early on, but once started uphill felt like quite an effort all the way back.

Met up with Marcus and Martyn in the new estate by Cardiff Gate for a reasonably quick run to Ruperra Castle and Cefn Mabley, with a detour at the end to run down a footpath with no stiles or gates through the hedges and get Martyn a couple of streets ticked off.

Really nice to see them again, and weather was good too with ground fairly dry. Felt like quite hard work at times, but this is a pretty long run for me now.

Completely failed to recognise the road at Michaelstone that I’d ran in the other direction 5 years ago.

Sticking with last week’s route for now. Taking it easy and just enjoying a reasonably nice evening. Overall time seems to be continuing the consistent trend. Shoes may be getting past their best now as noticing landing on outside of feet more than recently. If things are opening up soon may start on the new trainers so they are broken in before the 5k in a couple of weeks, rather than run in racers.

Something different today as after talking about my average grade adjusted pace for the year yesterday wanted to see what would happen if I went for a normal run but without the gradient.

Parked in Crosskeys to run out and back along Sirhowy railway track but saw it was uphill into Wattsville so changed into a loop out on the road to Cwmfelinfach and back along railway. Did take a lot of effort not to turn right and run up Mynyddislwyn - thinking of doing that after work one day once the clocks have changed.

First k beeped 4:37. Hadn’t gone particularly hard and had lots of traffic issues through the park - but fairly certain the watch had cut something as expecting more like 4:10 or faster. 2nd k beeped 3:45 and was fairly certain it had added a chunk as it was uphill and expecting 4:05-4:10 pace as had got up to speed. The 3:45 was a bit of a mental boost as then encouraged me to put a bit more effort in for the way back to see what 5k and 10k times I could do. 3rd km beeped 3:52 and gps slightly off, expected just under 4:00. Rest of the run km splits were steady around 3:55, maybe a bit slower than I was expecting but not bad as I could have put more effort in.

Overall, did run pretty much exactly 10k if replotting my route - in 39:45, without really aiming for it to be a quick run, wearing old shoes, not feeling too well to start with and still getting 90m elevation in. Gives a bit of confidence that I can still put in fast runs even without any speed work in over a year.

Easy run with Mark and Alice around Wentwood West.

Mostly on new paths to me which was nice, and got to see some views over to the ridge behind Cwmbran. Bonus new square - first one since either of the Treharris area runs from December.

A test for the new trail shoes - the wet bits and the really steep bits were a little too much for them (as expected), but I was amazed how well they absorbed the impact on hard trails and roads - to the point I didn't feel any at all. Felt quite heavy though but so far not disappointed.

The steeper bits felt hard enough even at taking it easy pace - just so nice to be able to go somewhere different and go somewhere steeper!

Same route as usual. Not so keen today so was going to try harder to take it easy - but as the guy in the orange shorts ran past just before I started sought to catch him before getting to Melfort Road. Turns out this was quite easy as he seemed to start walking after the end of my road.

Relatively steady until starting up the Ridgeway and then a bit more effort from there. Legs feeling heavier than they did earlier in the week.

Same route as for the last few days but a bit later than intended as had a meeting slotted in at short notice and it then over-ran by 40 minutes.

Wasn't really looking at the watch and instead was just holding it back a bit and sticking to comfortable, until the last k or so. Overall a lot faster than I was expecting it to be.

Meetings overran by just 35 minutes today and made sure I was dressed ready to get out whilst still sunny. Also still windy out on Melfort. Had run through a car crash, cricket match and football game all before zi got to the Handpost.

Overall pace was pretty good. As before didn’t set out to be quick but once started wanted to maintain. Ends up being a pretty good effort to round off the year.

Last meeting of the day overran by an hour so the sun had just about gone by the time I got out. Not a totally wasted day though as finally cracked a really tricky data issue we’ve been getting nowhere with for over 6 months and is causing variances of £100ms. There’s a lot to be said for misapplying logic seen in other systems just to see if it works...

Fairly standard route. Didn’t start fast, as Saturday ended the streak of runs from home so no pressure to maintain. Pace still ended up quick by the end. Windier than I was expecting.

Wanted a road run with moderate elevation as per usual - and after some thought realised there’s nowhere better worth driving to so just ran from home, after eventually coaxing myself outside. Other options may start looking better when the weather improves.

Double Ridgeway with canal. Not really going for distance, nor keen to push hard, so just did whatever.

Looped at the end and did two “efforts” rather than one, which felt much harder.

Bit of a busy morning with blood test, covid swab test #5, and getting the shoes I ordered yesterday afternoon (despite it telling me on the order, and on the package itself, that it would come on Tuesday!)

Easy run with Mark and Alice around Draethen. Over towards Ruperra, then a couple of new paths for me and the Iron Bridge before looping around the main track in the Draethen woods after. Fortunately in a good weather window and finished a few minutes before the afternoon's hail started.

Pace fairly slow by my standards, and the HR recording averaging 114 (it looks suspiciously low for the last 2k or so) - good to do it to start transitioning me out of lockdown mode, and suppose this is about as close to a rest day as I'll get for now and may do me some good.

Again nice to have real people to talk to - so thanks to Mark and Alice for inviting me out.

Route a bit more like earlier in the winter as although light, reduced the amount I was against the wind. Overall wind and rain was there, but only significant around the turning point on the cycle path and a couple of other short bits.

Held up a bit coming back onto Bassaleg Road at the end as stuck behind a slower runner (wearing some fancy Nike shoes and rolling his feet outwards a lot more than I do) and couldn't get passed due to a line of parked cars on pavement, traffic in road, and delivery driver walking around without looking where he was going.
