11 AM

Road bike 1:50:00 [2] 27.0 mi (4:04 / mi)

Tomintoul loop with Louise. Detour to the Glenlivet cafe for lunch. She got to ride my bike whilst I rode Mikey's with walking shoes and no cleats. Best weather of the week.

Orienteering 36:38 [3] 3.5 mi (10:28 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

INVOC Schools event, Culloden Woods.
Green course, 4.8km 85m.
Another spikey Scottish forest. Better than anticipated except for the area around #10. Made the mistake of not taking the path route to this control, otherwise clean.
Achilles sore again despite not running full pace.

Orienteering 12:00 [3] 1.0 mi (12:00 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

Got lost in the usual light green bit.

Achilles update :
It wasn't good on Saturday. OK to start with but sore after about half an hour. Not ideal then driving for 4 hours instead of warming down. Settling down since then but aware of it, particularly first thing in the morning. Probably not idea running again today but I don't often get the opportunity to visit Culbin. Sore again now but no worse than it has been recently. Will try to keep to alternate days for running. Will be easier once back in the normal routine next week.

Road bike 1:30:00 [2] 24.0 mi (3:45 / mi)

Loop up to Tomintoul from our accommodation at Glenlivet. Dry enough to tempt me out but wet after half an hour.

Orienteering race 1:04:25 [4] 5.0 mi (12:53 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

Scottish Champs, Dalbeattie Forest.
M55L 6.4km 160m.
Going OK as far as #11 but not so good after that. Worst case was #16. This 300m leg took me 9 minutes. Just couldn't make any sense of the map in the circle and eventually bailed out to relocate. At least 6 mins binned. #14 felt nearly as bad at the time but splits suggest that I only lost a small amount of time despite bailing out to the track to relocate. 55 mins was definitely possible but everyone else lost lots of time as well so I still took the win.
Really enjoyed the challenge which was made much harder by the rain and dark green forest.
Results:

RG: (GPS not very accurate): https://www.solway.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#68&c...

Edit: results subject to protest. #5 in wrong place so Bilbo may be the official winner. Not sure that was the biggest issue with the course....

Edit (2): I have a short memory. Only 2 years ago I questioned whether to bother with the Scottish Champs after a control was misplaced. To have the same problem only two years later isn't good. No one bothered with a protest in 2017. Perhaps we need to protest more often if we want things to improve? Or maybe not.....
BTW removing a split shouldn't be allowed. Either the results should stand or the course be voided. In this case I'm in favour of the results left as they were. It seemed pretty obvious to me where the misplaced control would be having checked the correct location so time loss was minimal. There were far larger chunks of time being lost elsewhere due to inadequacies with the map.

Edit (3): 2nd, 4 mins down on Bilbo. Didn't deserve to win after my massive blow out on #16 I guess.

Orienteering race 49:32 [4] 4.5 mi (11:00 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

LOC Middle Distance race, Stickle Pike.
Black course, 6.0km 300m.
Pretty decent but a couple of bananas where I left the previous control in the wrong direction (#4 and #6). Got passed early on by Matt Elkington but he seemed to take most of the course to fully get away. I assume he was making mistakes but he was quite helpful on a number of controls as I saw the direction he was leaving from.
Finished in 11th, first very old man but 10 mins down on the youngsters.
Achilles was a bit sore, particularly running downhill, but hopefully within acceptable limits. Tomorrow morning key.

Mountain Bike 2:30:00 [2] 26.0 mi (5:46 / mi)

Sometimes it's good being injured. Because I'm only running alternate days at the moment I brought my MTB for some alternative exercise. Got dropped off at Lowick Common and cycled over Blawith, Torver, Broughton Moor and Caw to Dunnerdale. Not often I visit Dunnerdale so, to make the most of it, carried on up the valley to Wrynose Bottom.then back down to the orienteering car park.

Dunnerdale so beautiful (bluebells stunning this year) that Janet and I went for a walk, followed by a pint in the pub in Seathwaite. Good day.

Decided to make today a rest day instead. Quads a bit sore after yesterday's blast on the MTB. Achilles a little grumbly playing golf (and cutting the grass) but not too bad. Good decision not to run yesterday. Might be jogging again on Thursday.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Managed to offload my run in the 3rd team to some unsuspecting punter from AIRE ;-) Hopefully my Achilles will settle a lot quicker for not running today. It feels similar to how it did the day after the JK Relay.
5 PM

Mountain Bike 56:00 [2] 11.5 mi (4:52 / mi)
(injured)

So it turns out that I was unable to resist going out for some exercise. Standard MTB loop. My frustration lead to quite a few strava segment pb's. Overtook a car going round Yateholme :-)

Orienteering race 50:09 [4] 5.0 mi (10:02 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

British 'Long Distance' Champs, Arncliffe and Kilnsey North.
M55L(?) 7.3km, 310m.
There must be a story behind the short courses but I haven't heard a convincing one yet. I was on Enquiries from 0830 to 1030 which meant a 0630 alarm. Not ideal preparation for a 1330 start.
I set off early to the start and had a walk/jog around the warm up map. Despite my best efforts it never really felt like the British Champs. I set off hard (as it was obviously a short course) and had JonX for company for the first 8 controls (M50 and M55 were a bit like a gaffled relay). We both made mistakes in this section but nothing major. Then we had the dead running section to #9. A downhill leg of over a km which was taking well under 5 mins for the speedy guys. My Achilles didn't like this and started to get sore, further distracting me from the task in hand. I missed at #11 (control sneakily tucked behind a tiny spur) and struggled to keep running on the fell race section #11 to #13. I then fell into the obvious trap of running from #13 to #16, realising quickly but then losing further time locating #14. OK after that but the damage was done.
Knew I hadn't run fast enough for a decent result and not surprised to be well beaten by Tim and some better runners.
5th place, just over 3 mins down on Tim.
Relegated myself to the 3rd team tomorrow so that I can jog rather than stress my Achilles further.
RG: https://www.boc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#38&course=1...

Orienteering 15:00 [2] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

Walk/jog on the warm up map and to the start.
Achilles sore on finishing so virtually no warm down.

Golf with Andy and Mick. 34 Stableford points (15/19).
Achilles a little niggly. Not helped by the fact that big toe hurts on the opposite foot so not walking freely. Ice after. .

Note

I know no one takes any notice of rankings but...

Scores are in for the JK. Apparently my run the week before JK at the little CLARO event at Dob Park was better than either day at JK. How can this be?
Worse still, despite winning JK, I have this week slipped to 2nd in M55 because Graham Patten (nothing personal) scored 1347 points at the Cumbrian Galoppen last weekend. My scores for winning the JK were 1285 and 1288.
Every time I mention the possibility of a weighting for the major events I get shouted down by the statisticians. I don't understand. In any other sport you get more ranking points for winning a major event than your local league. What's different in orienteering?
It will be interesting to see what points are awarded for the British. Rant over.
12 PM

Trail running 26:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony ISO3

Lap of Digley. Achilles OK but blood coming from under my L big toe nail (stubbed at JK Relay). Might need to bandage on Sunday.
4 PM

Note

Golf. Foursomes knockout comp with Andy.
Won on the 18th. Never more than one hole in it..
Achilles a little niggly.
