Orienteering race 31:00 [5]

Running the short leg of a handicap team with Kirsty and Roger. Felt surprisingly ok for the day after a classic and a night in a tent. No real errors, just a few seconds here and there. Maybe 1 min total. K and R ran well too and we won the overall handicap trophy - good team effort.

Orienteering race 1:15:00 [5]

Scottish Champs at Rannoch. W21E. First decent classic distance race this year - phew. Felt I was actually racing this weekend. A few small mistakes (3mins?) but no major errors. Was caught 5 mins by Cat. Used her for a few short legs then let her go - only to see her behind me again after the next. Repeated the same process over the next section too before missing no 21 myself. Pretty chuffed to win the Scottish native trophy (5th overall).

Note

Hung the last few controls at Bogendreip. Not a great night. Session seemed to go quite well apart from disintegrating maps. Even better E enjoyed it - going off to find some controls on his own when pointed in the right direction and asking for more.

Control hanging at Bogendreip for training on Wed. Out for 90' and ran out of time before I'd quite finished, so will need to get E's assistance to put the last few out on Wed. Never got moving vey fast.

Only time for a green course. Wasn't at all focussed - too many things happening and course wasn't exactly TD5 for most legs, so no real need to get my brain in gear. Which is probably why I skipped from no 2 - no 4 without even realising until the end. It does explain why things weren't quite as expected on the leg! Enjoyed the run all the same.

Ben Newe. Haven't run here for ages and it will forever hold memories of long tough buggy runs. Parked up the wee back road and headed up the hill, but went round the track along the S side (doing intervals) before heading to the top. Came off by the NE ridge down to Glen Buchat then back round the N side on the road to the starting point. Didn't see a sole. Really nice run and stayed dry 'till I got back to the car.

3x2'+1', 5x1'+1', 6x1'+1'
First 3 on flat / downhill. Remainder on hills and last few very steep. 3' recovery jog between 2nd and 3rd set. Legs felt better, but still heavy running.

First time at Glen Tanar with DR this year. Did 8x2' +1' hills on the diagonal track with an extra one on the end. Felt dreadful - legs died after the first minute and never really recovered. Muscles were far sorer than the effort deserved - hope they're just still tired from the weekend.

To the start of the hill and back down the osprey track at the end. Fantastic evening - summer's here at last. Warm down was a bit too brisk for my liking.

GWC is entered and WMOC is coming up before then - time for some proper quality training. Aim is for 2 x interval / hill / speed sessions each week (not counting w/e races) for the next 8 weeks or so....

WOC long selection race Creag Mhic. Another great race. Missed 4-5 mins, but feeling sluggish and off the pace compared with people I should be racing. Really enjoyed it though.

Macbeth Relays
Had expected to be away at a meeting for this, but after it was cancelled got a late call up to fill a team last night. It was only after putting the phone down that it occurred to me that Sam B et al might be rather youthfully competitive....
I was on 2nd leg and, as feared, Sam came back in the lead on 1st. Took it steady up the hill and didn't feel too bad at the top. Got passed by Alan S and Veronique? near our house, but managed to hold off everyone else. Actually quite pleased with the run and my time was 12secs faster than last year, although it did feel a bit easier running it in the opposite direction. Team ended up 4th overall (Sam, Fin and Megan).
Need some more training sessions like this.

Out at 7:45 checking controls at Balmedie. All seemed to go smoothly with a little bit of added excitement of a fire in the middle of the White course.

Had fun sitting watching one of the controls for a while. Interesting thing was that I only saw 1 person out of 10 or so punch it. The other nearest controls were 250m away...

From Dinnet to Ballater with E on the tag along. Lunch at the tea sho then back again. Felt like hard work at times. Think I was being taken for a ride or something like that....

Parked at Knockburn Loch and ran up Kerloch by the big track from the E then along the top to the edge of Bogendreip and back down the W side - with J. First time I've done that ascent - mostly pretty runnable, but gets a bit steep towards the top of the forest. Up in 43'. Nice sunny day, but wind still chilly. Prominent Peak 4.

From Cambus with J. Up the Crannach track towards Morven. Turned right in the bog to ascend by the usual route, but then woossed out and turned right to head up Culblean Hill instead. Dropped back towards Crannach and into Cambus. Long enough for me today and would have been very wild on top of Morven.

Running 1st leg on the Mixed AdHoc. Wasn't feeling too lively, but the mass start kicked me into action and I ran pretty hard all the way (telling myself I needed a few more intensive training sessions). Two little wobbles at the end, but a pretty good run.

Orienteering race 58:00 [5]

BOC Individual Cannock Chase. W40L.
Confused at the start - mis-read no 1 as the ditch rather than erosion gully (which I could barely see on the 1:15000). Ran right past the control and mis-read the code (black bits holding the kite made the 3 look more like a 6). Faffed for ~45s before re-checking the control. Missed no 3 slightly - put off by unmapped bushy vegetaton - and relocated off track / veg boundary (~45s). After that got my act together and was much more careful and also very wary of the map. Got through quarry bit without any real problems then put my foot down a bit and was fairly clean round the rest. Calves were cramping by the end - haven't run as hard in ages. Pleased with the result.
