Tuesday Sep 30, 2014 #

8 AM

Note

Golf: Pro's comp. 27 Stableford points. 8 out, 19 back so the usual erratic stuff.
3 PM

Terrain running 1:22:00 [3] 9.0 mi (9:07 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw

Holmbridge skyline, as 2 weeks ago. Another shorts and T shirt day. Left knee getting more troublesome, particularly on the descent at the end. Ice bath after. Lots of stretching and rollering of quads later which seems to help a bit.

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]
(rest day)

Feeling tired.

Sunday Sep 28, 2014 #

10 AM

Note
(rest day)

Another round of golf. Somewhat better (about 30 points) but still not happy.

Saturday Sep 27, 2014 #

9 AM

Road running 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Into Holmfirth and back. Still nervous (and conscious of every little niggle) when running on the road.
2 PM

Note

Golf weekend, Forest Pines, Scunthorpe.
Nice flat woodland course but my golf was poor, particularly around the greens. Only about 20 Stableford points. Need a lesson.

Friday Sep 26, 2014 #

11 AM

Terrain running 46:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Dragged myself away from the Ryder Cup for a while. Holme Moss to Dead Edge End and back. A bit wet and windy up there today. Knee fine with this despite being painful getting down stairs.

Thursday Sep 25, 2014 #

8 AM

Note

Golf with Andy. 30 Stableford points which wasn't too bad considering:
a. it was very windy.
b. I found out my Mum died overnight 30 mins before teeing off :-(
2 PM

Mountain Bike 1:50:00 [2] 24.0 mi (4:35 / mi)

Huddersfield, canal towpath to Marsden, up Wessenden and back via Goodbent Lodge. Left knee a little sore from the start but no worse at end. Thanks Sir Brad for the inspiration.

Note
(rest day)

Left knee worse still this morning. Hobbling down the stairs. Decided to start a course of Ibuprofen.

Tuesday Sep 23, 2014 #

8 AM

Note

Tuesday golf. Bogie comp (basically Matchplay against the course). The course won easily as I finished 7 down. Only 'won' 2 holes so equivalent to about 105 at a guess. Poor.
3 PM

Trail running 51:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:30 / mi)

Hades Clough route. First time for a while but felt good, cruising at a good pace without pushing too hard. Only worry is the sore left knee which hurts a bit going downhill and when I flex it more than in a usual stride. It is actually more troublesome going downstairs than running. Trying not to worry too much as I can remember similar pains in the past and it's never lead to a long term problem.

Orienteering race 1:02:11 [3] 5.0 mi (12:26 / mi)

CLARO Yorkshire Superleague, Lindley Moor. Short Brown, 6.0km, 110m.
I knew this was going to be a rough grotty forest and had very low expectations. Unfortunately the event failed to live up to even these low expectations. The main issue was the standard of the map which was like something from the 1970's. I could have coped if the controls were in the right place but no.4 was out by about 100m. I spent about 10 mins hunting a vague area of forest (and re-attacking from various directions) before giving up. I then found it on the way to no.5. My split for no.4 was 14 mins (identical to Heather Monro - what was she doing there?!) and then no.5 took 1.02 for what should have been a 250m leg! After this I carried on at training pace, enjoying the few nice bits of forest. I contrived to do the loop between no.6 and no.10 in the wrong direction (correcting myself and hence a long split to no.7). All very disappointing. I hope there weren't too many newcomers at the event.
Finished 3 mins down on Heather, both having lost almost identical time on the misplaced control. Dickie was pleased that he didn't run and so avoided getting beaten by the wife!
Splits: http://claro-orienteering.org.uk/results/lindley20...
It would have been a good race if I'd not gone 6 to 9....
Routegadget for what it's worth:

Edit: results now revised, taking out splits before and after offending control.

Golf comp. Texas Scramble. Fun format, but our team of 4 could only manage one under par between us. I did contribute. A bit.

Wednesday Sep 17, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Various bits achy this morning. Left knee most troublesome.

Tuesday Sep 16, 2014 #

8 AM

Note

Tuesday golf. No comp so 3-way matchplay with Andy and David. Lost ball on no.9 so no total but around high 90's again. Driving better, but need to improve around the green.
3 PM

Terrain running 1:23:00 [3] 9.0 mi (9:13 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw

Holmbridge skyline anticlockwise (county boundary version). Still only my footprints in evidence, although I did spot someone in Ramsden Clough. Beautiful up there today with a pleasant breeze otherwise it would have been too hot. Achilles fine but left knee does hurt when I squat or jump down off something.

10 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

Left calf sore. Hopefully just tired from today's run.

Monday Sep 15, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

All a bit creaky (inc. left knee) but nothing serious I hope.

Sunday Sep 14, 2014 #

4 AM

Note

Team managing SYO at Peter Palmer Relay.
12 PM

Road running 33:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:15 / mi)

Yateholme and back. Only first and last mile on tarmac but good start to reintroduction to road. Had intended to do full loop of Yateholme but right Achilles very slightly niggly so turned back.

Saturday Sep 13, 2014 #

11 AM

Terrain running 1:18:00 [3] 8.5 mi (9:11 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Loop from Holme Moss: Dead Edge End, Winscar Reservoir, Snailsden Edge and back round Ramsden Clough and Yateholme Edge. Deserted; followed my footprints from Tuesday all way to Dead Edge and no sign of anyone else having been there.
Body all OK but tiring towards the end. Longest run for some time.

Thursday Sep 11, 2014 #

11 AM

Mountain Bike 1:30:00 [2] 22.0 mi (4:05 / mi)

Dunford Bridge to Sheffield via Trans Pennine Trail and Wharncliffe. Trail now surfaced all way from Wortley to Dunford Bridge.
2 PM

Note

Session with Kim. She has been researching my problems and apparently my calf issues have mainly been in my head (or something like that). Propreceptors telling me I have a problem when I don't; compounded by each episode. Somewhat reassuring but the calf exercises are all good and I should continue with these. Also I need to gradually reintroduce roads into my running, gradually building up distance and speed.
Some massage to loosen the tight bits around the bottom of my calves/top of Achilles area.
3 PM

Mountain Bike 1:35:00 [2] 22.0 mi (4:19 / mi)

Back to Dunford Bridge by same route (more uphill this way).
7 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

Now up to 3 x 12 eccentric and 3 x 12 concentric on each leg plus some plyometrics.

Tuesday Sep 9, 2014 #

8 AM

Note

Golf: mid-week Medal, so off the white tees. 99 gross (73 net). Another slow start (53 out) but improvement on back 9. Finished 16th, 7 shots back. Achilles noticeably better than last week.
3 PM

Terrain running 46:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Holme Moss to Dead Edge End and back. Achilles fine but still nervous.

Monday Sep 8, 2014 #

7 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

Calf survived the weekend and Achilles feeling less niggly too.

Sunday Sep 7, 2014 #

1 PM

Orienteering race 32:00 [4] 3.0 mi (10:40 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

British Middle Champs. Brereton Spurs.
Started well and leading at no.8 (of 31) before blowing no.9 (about 1:20). Never really got concentration back after that and was running out of control. Eventually caught my 2 minute man (John Duckworth) at no.25. Then got a stick in my eye going into no.26 and struggling to see after that. Followed John through 27 but didn't notice him punching no.28. Just beat him to the finish only to find that I'd missed out no.28. Doh. Would have been third behind Clive and Quentin.

Saturday Sep 6, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Spectating and protecting my various dodgy bits at the British Sprint Champs.

Friday Sep 5, 2014 #

9 AM

Note

Golf (again)! Another improvement after a dodgy start. 37 points, 25 of them on the back nine. 96 gross.
R Achilles still niggling away. Getting slightly worse if anything. Worried. Booked to see Kim next week.

Thursday Sep 4, 2014 #

8 AM

Note

Golf with Andy. Big improvement on Tuesday; 35 points (98 gross). Much more consistent.
8 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

Achilles still niggling. Nervous about running. May just wait until Sunday.

Wednesday Sep 3, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Maybe I shouldn't have run yesterday. Legs even more tired and achy today in all sorts of places, including worryingly, the right Achilles. Could be partly due to the unusual golf movements? Some early morning stretching and crossing of fingers.
9 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

R Achilles slightly niggly.

Tuesday Sep 2, 2014 #

8 AM

Note

Golf: Pro's mid-week comp. 24 points (off 26 handicap, so 109 gross). Not good but could have been much worse. Happy considering how little I've played over the last 2 months. Finished well too (14 points off last 6 holes).
5 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

7 PM

Trail running 32:00 [3] 3.5 mi (9:09 / mi)

Lap of Spring Wood whilst waiting for Louise at Harriers. Easing my legs back into running.

Monday Sep 1, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Tired legs. Cycling over for now. Back to golf and Orienteering.
Great to have the option of (road and mountain) bike when needed though; I will try and keep riding once a week over the winter.
