Orienteering race 59:36 [4] 6.0 mi (9:56 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Midland Champs, Longshaw. M50L, 9.0km, 355m.
Pretty good run. No big time losses: bad route to no.1, hesitation to no.5, small miss at no.7, otherwise good until I caught Rob Campbell at no.16. Then the pace picked up and we had small misses at nos.17 and 20. Total time lost no more than 2-3 mins so happy enough until I heard Tim (who caught Clive) did 56. Routegadget (course 4):

Orienteering 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw

Putting out controls for YHOA Junior squad training, Burbage Mines. Then some shaddowing and general running around.
1 PM

Orienteering 45:00 [2] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw

Putting out controls on Surprise View then shaddowing/spectating.
2 PM

Orienteering 45:00 [2] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw

And finally, putting out controls on Burbage Boulders, including there and back from Surprise View. The area really wasn't usable yet due to bracken so very tough going. Knackered now.

10 AM

Terrain running 1:20:00 [3] 8.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Stopped off at Langsett en route to Sheffield. Margery Hill via Cut Gate then back direct via Pike Lowe. Narrowly avoided being mistaken for a grouse again; the shooting was all happening to the north and west of Cut Gate (I think).
12 PM

Note

Precautionary massage with Richard. He attacked my calves first then had a go at my quads. Didn't think it could hurt more than a calf massage but he had me jumping off the table. Hoping this will relieve the knee pain that's been niggling away in the background for the last few weeks.

Too wild and windy for golf so another complete rest day. Probably need a short break; my body isn't used to going so long without an injury break :-)

Note
(rest day)

Need at least one day off to recover from the weekend. Over 1000 miles driving, four races and the stress of managing England to a narrow loss in the SHI. The SHI defeat is hard to take. We narrowly won the relays and came very close to a tie in the Individual. If Ruth hadn't had an injured foot or Cat's shoe had held together we'd have won W21 thereby drawing the Individual and setting up an overall victory. Time for England to sack the manager? Three losses from three starts so far...

11 AM

Orienteering race 42:56 [4] 5.0 mi (8:35 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Race the Castles, Forvie Sands. Short Brown, 6.5km.
Nice to be orienteering alone today and not chasing down an ex-British Squaddie. Clean run but general concensus was that it was too easy. Too many legs where you could see a big dune 800m away and just run to it before doing a little navigation. Pleased to be running strongly (and without even any niggles) for the third day in a row. First place, 4 min ahead of Colin Mc. Routegadget:

Orienteering race 1:03:24 [4] 5.5 mi (11:32 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Race the Castles, Balmoral estate. Short Brown 7.0km 285m.
Started 1 min after Colin McIntyre. Saw him punch no.1 but never caught him (for the first time) until no.5.I moved ahead up the hill to no.7 but we were both too far right. Colin corrected quicker and punched 1.5 min before me. I caught him again between 10 and 11 only to miss 13 and 14 letting him through again. Chased him down the hill to finish ensuring i was within the 1 min. Enough for the win despite around 5 mins lost. Routegadget:

Orienteering race 22:36 [4] 2.5 mi (9:02 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

JOK Chasing Sprint, Birsemore Hill. Vet Men prologue. 3.2km.
Steady but clean run. 25s down on Bilbo and 1min on Frank Buytaert (Belgium).
2 PM

Orienteering race 24:23 [4] 2.5 mi (9:45 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

The Chase. 3.1km.
Sprinted off and caught Bilbo. We both caught Frank at no.1 and I settled in behind to recover from the initial sprint. Bilbo missed the dodgy no.4 (hidden under brashings) and I nipped ahead. Frank then twisted his ankle on the descent to no.8 and I found myself alone in the lead. Should have cruised home but stopped concentrating and got the wrong no.9. Disqualified, handing the win to JonX who finished a few minutes behind.

Road bike 2:30:00 [2] 33.0 mi (4:33 / mi)

Holmfirth CC Sunday ride. B group. Lockwood, Meltham, Marsden (cafe stop), Diggle, Greenfield, Saddleworth Moor. Lots of stop start, particularly early on. Pleased to beat all but one of them to the top of the Greenfield climb. Left knee sore so need to do some quad stretching.
4 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

Plus stretching and rollering, concentrating on quads.
Now resting up with a view to hopefully completing 4 races over 3 days next weekend.

Saturday Oct 11, 2014 #

11 AM

Terrain running 1:15:00 [3] 7.0 mi (10:43 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

Loop of West Nab. Half deep heather and tussock, half nice grassy conduit. So pretty much a two pace run. Turns out I chose the same day they were shooting the grouse. Had to detour to avoid getting shot. This seems a bit of a safety issue as I was on open access land for the whole run. Bumped into Helen Berry going the opposite way along the conduit.

Note
(rest day)

Golf with Andy and Roy. Much better today; started brilliantly (20 points off the first 7 holes) and carried on respectably for a total of 40 points (gross 94, including an 8 and a 9). They insisted I hand in my card and hence my handicap will come down to 25.

Note

Golf with Andy. Head not into it at start, but got going later on. 26 points, most in the last 12 holes.
4 PM

Trail running 1:02:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:51 / mi)

Over the hill towards Meltham and back. Down Magdalen Road and back up Harden Moss Road (both bridleways).

Note
(rest day)

Session with Kim. Not surprised to hear my knee pain is probably due to my very tight quads. She loosened them off somewhat and I have to continue stretching and rollering them. OK to carry on with training as long it doesn't get any worse. Make a note of which mornings are particularly sore to try and work out what is causing it.

Everyone there very impressed and most (me included) said they'd like to end up there one day...

Orienteering race 51:57 [4] 5.5 mi (9:27 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

DEE Level B, Formby. Short Brown, 7.5km.
Experimenting with Simon's glasses. OK to start but problems when technical/grotty underfoot. Gave up after 6 controls due to big drops of sweat obscuring vision. I think most of my navigation problems were due to difficulty interpreting the map rather than reading it. Lost small amounts of time at #4, #8, #10, #12 and #22. Probably only about 3 mins in total so pretty happy. Running OK with no injury issues. Finished 1st, 50s ahead of Matt Fellbaum but slower mpk than Max Cole on Brown. Routegadget:

Golf. Sat comp: Quad AM: teams of 4, best two scores per hole to count. I was playing with three 12/13 handicapers and managed to contribute occasionally.

9 AM

Terrain walking 1:00:00 [1] 4.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw

Temple Newsam. Checking control sites for the British Schools. 3 hours jog/walk mainly on paths as woods full of brambles. Feeling tired and lethargic.
6 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

Thursday Oct 2, 2014 #

Note

Golf: 34 Stableford points (17/17). More consistent but still 3 'blobs' so room for improvement.
6 PM

Mountain Bike 57:00 [2] 11.5 mi (4:57 / mi)

Standard Digley-Yateholme-Hades-Cartworth Moor loop (as 15/8). Knee sore.

Wednesday Oct 1, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Left knee not as bad as feared this morning.
More stretching and foam rollering this evening. This does seem to help relieve the soreness.
