WC Knock out Quali

A nice little fiddly sprint. Didn't see the barrier in the castle but quickly worked out the routes and otherwise was clean pretty much the whole way and pushing hard. Very happy to qualify and extremely happy to get a top 6 to get me in the A final.

Small miss at one, quick chase, got to one a bit panicky and then spooned two completely losing 30s. Chased hard but game over. Needed to do some orienteering and calm down a bit. Very annoyed to not even give myself the opportunity in the main bit of the race as I feel I picked a good heat.

What an afternoon though. The annoyance at not qualifying quickly dissipated after getting a prime spot for watching Ralph, Kris, Alice and Meg smash it. 4 top 10s!! Then a jog round the town, prepping for tomorrow.

GPS (I wasn't tracked)

Was looking forward to this and just wanted to attack it like I normally do. The first two controls I was running aggressively but orienteering very safe, going all the way to the road junction on one and then the ride to two (overshot slightly and came down the re-entrant but easy enough to relocate).
To three I picked the far right road choice round below 4 as I thought it was flatter. Turns out it wasn't but it was good running and I had a good split so worked well enough. Got through the next section cleanly, but struggling a lot up the hills and losing quite a lot of time. from 7-9. Again fairly clean but small miss on 13 and then had to walk a lot of 14 and much slower than those around me.
Back down to the road for 15 and then at 15 the fun begins. My initial plan to 17 was to the right but I was also tempted by the indistinct path. Flying down the road I caught a glimpse of the right route and the track looked overgrown so just kept going to the indistinct path, which turned out to be okay.
On the model yesterday the steep slopes were horrid so I took the right option to 18 and once out the grot just hurled myself down the road, quads quivering away. Managed to run a 2:00 800m apparently and the last 2.5k in 7:40. Into the arena in the lead. I knew I had an exceptional run for my standards but was surprised to be in the leaders chair for an hour. It was a good spectating spot.

A pretty incredible result for me in a middle but the area, planning and height differential all suited me, so I am glad to to have made the most out of it. Hopefully these WRE points will get me a bit later in the start block too.

British Middles - Chinley Churn --2nd.

Well this seemed to be planned for me. Navigationally really pretty simple but technical fell running.
Went off aggressively, was clean and managed to build a bit of a lead due to taking some big chunks on steep downhill legs. Lost time on the uphill legs and was dying on the second climb a bit. Caught Ben before the dead running section and tried to push on as the last bit was a xc race really but didn't have the fitness and the odd few second bananas so GG got some time on me here that I couldn't get back. Just managed to stay ahead of Will thanks to more downhill at the end.
Ridiculously happy with the result and definitely put in an above average performance today, lucky it was at a big event.

SHI Relay

In a team with Dan Spencer on first and Ali Masson on 2nd. Dan had an absolute flyer and came in 2min ahead of DuncanB in 2nd who was another 2:45 ahead of 3rd! Then saw the two Ali's together near the end but Masson came in first and couldn't see how far Willy would start behind me.
Started steady as the map was covered in lines and numbers near the start but got my 1 and heading to two I saw Willy about 100m ahead of me! The gaffling it turned out was quite significant. Reeled Willy in and spent the next 10min together occasionally separating, but then I had some shorter gaffles and got a pretty big gap. Saw I had a big gap at spectator and slowed down a bit to make sure I was clean and took a nice win. My first SHI relay win.
Never felt too much pressure or physically troubled at all as kept it safely under the red line the whole way.

Think this has got to be my favourite SHI's yet. The areas, courses and events in general were excellent and also the accommodation and especially the catering was amazing. A nice way to spend a weekend with friends and satisfy that competitive side without the pressures of WOC/JWOC. The weather helped out too along with thrashing the Scottish :)

SHI Individual Broughton Burrows.

So excited for this after a summer sat at the office dot watching just itching to do some orienteering. Unfortunately the summer involved no forest-o so I was very scrappy. Some bad mistakes early on at 1 and 7 then just so often got within 30m but wasn't good enough to interpret the exact location so a lot of meerkating ensued, losing 20-30s at every other control at times.
Physically I was pretty good though and didn't bother with a gel or anything. Managed to win the longest leg and the run in, which is just as good as winning the course really.

Incredibly fun race and looking forward to the relay.

KO sprint training in fountainbridge/exchange with Alex, Chris, Pippa, Max, Laura, Kirstin and Grace. With many thanks to Charlotte for planning.

First one I just managed to run away early away on. All 3 guys picked the same course.

2nd one was a hard choice in the exchange. Unfortunately a bit of construction caused a blockage and I ran past I control then got a bit confused by levels, and ended up having to put in a big kick to get up to and past Chris at the end. Think we all chose different ones this time!!

3rd Ungaffled. Tried playing games with Alex by waiting at 2 for him to go in front but we ended on the same route then I can never understand the map on the bridge across the exchange. Lost 20m to Alex but then he messed up worse so I just jogged it in for the W. I was very sloppy with my orienteering when trying to be clever. Got to practice these things though.

Pentlands on top form before I left. Skyline from Flotterstone round to Bell with Liam. Sunny and not too hot out, not feeling too bad either, all in all a good farewell run. Until I got back to Flotterstone car park about 10m from the car I tripped up and donated some skin.
Stupid Pentlands.
