Sunday Jun 29, 2014 #

Cycling 4:30:00 [3] 40.0 mi (6:45 / mi)

MTB canal an A71 to Livi with Jane. Couple of hours faffing with Almondell map, then back up the Almond and Union Canal. Ended up a bit of an epic.

Cycling 3:00:00 [3] 50.0 mi (3:36 / mi)

With JonX on his "entry level" carbon-fibre trek. I used the 30 year old steel white bike :)

Prestonpans -> Dunbar in a sensible way (21miles, 75mins)
Dunbar -> Prestonpans in a John Muir Way (29miles, 105mins)

Speedy section between Longniddrie and Drem when we latched on to the ERCC peloton. Managed (just) not to be among those dropped.

To be fair, as Jon put it, there would be a certain irony to naming a route after John Muir and then laying tarmac along it. The "Dangerous Ford" was a bit extreme though :)

Knee noticeably sore, and legs generally giving the impression they'd forgotten how to cycle. It has been almost a year, so that may be fair comment.

Otherwise, a nice ride, decent weather, good company, and tagging to J&J for the next leg of the JMW.

Running 47:00 [3] 6.0 mi (7:50 / mi)

That 7 mile loop around Galachlaw, long way back via Braid Hills Road. Aborted to jog with a mile to go when knee started to hurt.

Running 22:00 [3] 2.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

To work, and at end of run (see above)

Thursday Jun 26, 2014 #

Cycling 35:00 [2] 6.0 mi (5:50 / mi)

On the white bike with Jane, to INT AGM and home. Knee sore so no running today

Wednesday Jun 25, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 45:00 [2] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

To Nicolson Square from the lab, back round the meadows.

Orienteering 30:00 [4] 4.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Amusing secret sprinterval training with Tess on a WOC-themed Edinburgh map. Overtook a jogging lady, crossed the road, crossed back, passed her again, crossed the road, crossed back, passed her again, felt a bit if an idiot really.
But its all good :)

Running warm up/down 50:00 [2] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Lab home Meadows lap home

Running intervals 30:00 [4] 4.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

ML 4:47 44 40 40 41

Quite a bit of grump on these pages. Not tonight, although running solo it was a lovely evening, times dropping through the session, Edel pacing the last one. God's in his heaven and all's right with the world.

Monday Jun 23, 2014 #

Note

Left knee a bit sore, and tendon catching as it did post-BGR. Gives a funny nerve tingle. One to watch.

Sunday Jun 22, 2014 #

Orienteering race 50 [3] 6.0 mi (8 / mi)

Sol, lossie.
Camped overnight. Tired. Jacked at 17. Typical camping/running combo.

Saturday Jun 21, 2014 #

Orienteering race 38:00 [4] 5.0 mi (7:36 / mi)

Soul, dufftown.
Very well designed course in unpromising area. Got caught out by some oddness in the wood, and ran into an unmapped dead end , which most people seem to have done. It was certainly busy by the end.

The emit block didn't download, so time is made up. Backup confirmed I went to all controls, which I already knew. Typical emit really.

Craigmillar and ERI. Hot. Tired. Last week really took it out of me.

Tuesday Jun 17, 2014 #

Running intervals 28:00 [4] 3.1 mi (9:02 / mi)

5x1km 3:48 49 48 47 45. Felt leaden after the last few days, unsurprisingly, so the gradual speeding up was good. Hot and humid evening.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

To meadows, and afterwards to Rob's via some faffing for soup.

Monday Jun 16, 2014 #

Running 50:00 [2] 6.0 mi (8:20 / mi)

Lovely evening, for a plod down to Holyrood and round the Queen's drive, with a shortcutting climb past St.Margaret's Chapel.

Orienteering 2:43:44 [3] 14.1 mi (11:37 / mi)

Jukola. The best event on the planet. The return of the flying O'Kelly brothers, 7 M21s in 1996, the same seven guys with more paunch and less hair. JonX, Rob, Steve, Seamus, JonE, Pat and me. 727th, somewhat down from 258th.

Went out on the mass start last leg from the furthest corner of the field, got royally stuck in traffic for the first half. The elephant tracks offered the best going, but were super-crowded, and I failed to have enough patience. Lost about 5 mins at 6 when I took my own route along a nice ridge, but descended too late and overshot in the green, having to struggle back against the flow to the flag. Then, getting tired, joined a massive pack-error
at 10, another 10-mins lost.

Towards the end, cleared up and ran much of the last section "alone" - with apparently meant I was pulling a train from 13-18, then missed by 2 mins in the circle at 18 (didn't know that was possible at Jukola) and the train came rolling through.

Straight in the car and back to Edinburgh via Schiphol (one hour transfer, no bother nor even stress: why can't EWR and LHR be like that).

Some, ultimately it wasn't a particularly enjoyable or pleasant run. The comparison with the "mad cross country" race of '96 (lose 8mins at 1, finish 6 mins down) was the inability to run up the line, or off the line. Plus the errors born mainly of impatience and expecting the pack to do the work.

Event: Jukola 2014

Running 10:00 [1] 0.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Obstacle race at LHR carrying everything as handluggage with an 1hr 30 transfer time, just slid into the gate as the barrier was coming down.

Wednesday Jun 11, 2014 #

Running 53:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:34 / mi)

Rutgers EP. Trying a bit harder in the rain. Then drive to Penn, but no time for a River Drive loop. Shame.

Tuesday Jun 10, 2014 #

Running 1:05:00 [2] 7.0 mi (9:17 / mi)

Run around Rutgers Environment Preserve. Very nice indeed, a few big trees went down in 2012 hurrcane, but generally even nicer than I remember it.

Sunday Jun 8, 2014 #

Orienteering 1:14:00 [3] 7.4 mi (10:00 / mi)

Long hot red course at Quail Hill SC NJ. They'd run out of blue maps but it was an OK choice.

Some fracas with a park double booking meant controls were being stolen and replace throughout the event. combination of nice terrain and some grot, some seasonal marsh which the meet director later said was uncrosable. I did cross it, but that doesn't mean he's wrong. Lost a stack of time looking for a ride end "oh yeah, it completel overgrown there and the water company cut down all the trees". Bit hard to motivate after that. May be DQed, who knows?

Flo Williams funeral afterwards.

Running race 19:01 [4] 3.1 mi (6:08 / mi)

Parkrun. Weird one this, set off comfortably and found myself in the lead group (!?). Didn't recognise anyone, but knew Max and JJ were behind so very unconvinced this could be right. Went through 1km in 3:46. Bit of a headwind (10-15mph) and reached 2km in 7:43 as Max came by. Didn't notice the remaining splits, but finally hauled past Max with 1km to go. Finished 14th / 500

The good guys must have been somewhere else, and everyone else scared of the wind.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [1] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Reasonable warm up and down, then direct to airport for delayed flight.

Running 35:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:45 / mi)

Evening jog around Johnson Park. Welcome to America.

Friday Jun 6, 2014 #

Pity the poor sod who has to plan the WOC middle...

6x3mins 1 min rec. Hermitage with extra bits at start and finish via West Savile Terrace.

Wednesday Jun 4, 2014 #

Running 29:00 [3] 4.0 mi (7:15 / mi)

Three sessions today. Lunchtime vanished in a meeting, running across town for the car vanish when the rain was coming down stairrods. FVO WEE failed for lack of being there.
So scuttled round the Hermitage and home via AA at a brisk pace in the rain.

Tuesday Jun 3, 2014 #

Orienteering 40:00 [3] 4.4 mi (9:05 / mi)

TAY Green course on Kinnoul, still very nice at this time of year, aside from the odd nettle. Very scrappy, wrong paths and small misses everywhere. With James and Calum Urquhart doing short green.

Monday Jun 2, 2014 #

Running 54:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:43 / mi)

Monday run, finish along road

Sunday Jun 1, 2014 #

Orienteering race 33:16 [5] 4.7 mi (7:05 / mi)

M50 Relay, leg 2, after Caban, before Lee.

Fastest on my gaffle, and third fastest on the leg, can't disguise a shocking run. Went out 7th, quickly passed AIRE, WCOC and FVO, then clean to 8, but not quite enough to get sight of SROC and already lost a minute to Phil Murray (BOK) who was running down non-comp RogerT. Then spent 2.5 mins in the circle looking for a pit at 9 and that was game over. Scrappy after that, with a comedy 1min loss on a control beside the path, and sent Rob out with a 4 min gap on either side in third, which he held without trouble.
