Running 28:19 [4] 6.05 km (4:41 / km) +15m 4:37 / km
ahr:155 max:169 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 275 Black

Quick loop of Hyde Park in London (I'm flying back to YVR tomorrow from Heathrow). This is such a good city park, with some sections that feel really quite rural. I was probably 50% mud paths, 50% paved for this run. The paved sections were entertaining though, with huge crowds for the Winter Wonderland funfair - gave me some practice for dodging pedestrians in city sprint races :)

Running 49:15 [3] 9.09 km (5:25 / km) +178m 4:56 / km
ahr:148 max:169 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 275 Black

Christening my new pair of inov8s with a muddy run on the local hills. Up to The Halo, then over to Crawshawbooth and back through the valley.

inov8 have changed the design of their shoes, and they felt a little tight when I first put them on. I wore them around the house for a few hours on Christmas morning and that seems to have stretched them enough. Felt fine on this first real outing.

Short run from my parents' place. Up to The Halo (a UFO-shaped public art project on top of a local hill), then over to the dry ski slope, and back through the park. Not much flat ground in these parts.

Fun score O in Stanley Park. I haven't run for this long for a very long time, so I'm pleased with how my legs and body fared. Wasn't running super quickly, but was still strong towards the end.

One control was in the wrong place, and I gave up after 5 minutes of not finding it. I ended up skipping that control and one more. Surprisingly it looks like I finished 2nd; I was expecting at least a couple of people to sweep the course but nobody did.

Orienteering 33:45 [1] 3.37 km (10:01 / km) +35m 9:31 / km

Picking up controls after the WJR (mostly walking).

Then went to the GVOC AGM, which had free pizza. I'm currently on track to have free pizza 3 times in 5 days, so hopefully today's run offsets some of that.

I got a surprise award from the club to thank me for the work I do on mapping and event organisation. This was lovely to receive, and I think this is a really good idea to continue with in future years. I think I'll put my MEC voucher towards a new headlamp, to improve my chances in future Darkside events :)

Downhill skiing 54:53 [1] 8.67 km (6:20 / km) +893m 4:11 / km

Bonus day at Cypress. It was fun to have some fresh snow to carve in (way better than last weekend at Whistler), but wasn't really worth the 20 minute lineup each time. Probably need another 20cm of snow and then they'll be able to open the Lions lift which will make things much better.

Running 35:26 [3] 6.63 km (5:21 / km) +65m 5:06 / km
ahr:154 max:191 shoes: on Cloudflow Red/Blue

11 min warmup
2/4/2/4/2 min with 1 min rest in PSP
6 min cooldown

Hip flexors were getting pretty tight, so didn't finish the workout (was supposed to have an extra 4+2).

Downhill skiing 2:44:49 [2] 38.67 km (4:16 / km) +3784m 2:52 / km

First ski of the season at Whistler. Last-minute decision to go up, but the weather was looking great and I couldn't resist. Only a few runs open, with lots of man-made snow, plus some very icy sections. The bottom of Ego Bowl had the highest density of skiers I've ever seen on a slope; got lots of practice doing short turns and managed to avoid any collisions, but I think it was dangerously busy. Catskinner on Blackcomb was the most fun, and even had some bumps to play in.

Had to head back early (to go and do an escape room), but I'd skied every run that was open by then anyway. Fingers crossed for lots of snow in the next few weeks!

Trampolining at Apex Adventure Park! Went with a few friends from work, plus a 5 year old. It was super fun and very tiring. I'd say ~ 80% of the people there were under 15, but it's still fun for adults. Trampolines, climbing walls, ninja courses, trampoline basketball, bubble soccer (which we didn't have time to do) and more. Think I'm going to have soreness in lots of places tomorrow...

Warmup, test-running 3 courses for Sprint Camp at UBC, cooldown.

Need to shorten the chase a bit, but otherwise things are looking really fun :)

First darkside of the year, in lower Lynn Valley. Fun course with just the right number of bingo controls to make it a true adventure. Started off strong, but was broken by the end, with barely enough energy to think straight. Fortunately I got all the controls and got back in time, but didn't have the stamina to go to the pub afterwards. Slept 10 hours that night, and I'm feeling significantly better now. Maybe darkside was the cure I needed?
