Note

Went to a PT appointment for my back. Ugh. Back to this.

Running 33:00 [3] 3.5 mi (9:26 / mi)
shoes: Blue/Orange Asics 2019

I tried running intervals, but did not get through my workout, as my back pain (radiating down the leg) got worse and worse with each interval. The plan was to do 400-800-1200-1200-800-400. Ended up doing 400-800-800.

Running 41:31 [2] 4.88 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: Blue/Orange Asics 2019

After we took out the boats at Polebridge, there was some down time while the cars were being retrieved from the put-in point at the Canadian border, so I went for a run along hot, dusty roads with some gorgeous views of Glacier.

Running 23:15 [2] 2.91 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: Blue/Orange Asics 2019

Running from the (closed) Canadian border south on the gravel road and then back, before most of our group were awake. This was the first day of our three-day floating trip on the north fork of the Flathead River on the edge of Glacier National Park with Alli's family. Gorgeous!

Running 1:31:49 [2] 8.2 mi (11:12 / mi) +600m 9:07 / mi
shoes: Blue/Orange Asics 2019

I ran up Pengelly Ridge trail (https://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7073297/pengel...) to the top of the ridge and then down on the front side of Mt. Sentinel. It was like 90F, but with zero humidity, so felt much less uncomfortable than 70F back East. I had to switch to walking several times on the climb up. Everything in Missoula is really steep!

Cross-Training 45:00 [1]

Stationary bike. I planned to run with Jeremy early this morning, but Inara had other plans. She was up at 4, and that was the end of that.

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

Fitness blender core routine, same as last week.

Hamstring felt ok, just tightened up a bit on the cool-down jog. Nerve pain in the back ever-present - I think I have to be resigned to living with that pain for the long-term.

Running 1:04:20 [2] 6.7 mi (9:36 / mi) +335m 8:19 / mi

Beautiful evening run at Missoula's Blue Mountain Reservation. Lovely trails that I had virtually to myself. As usual, the run started with a long climb, then a nice contouring section and a long way down, to a point lower than where I started, and finally a tough climb back to the trailhead at the end. Man, running out here in the summer is so so so much more pleasant than back East!!

T.rex training 15:00 [1]

Evening yoga.

Hamstring sore today, so I just did an easy spin on the stationary bike while watching Jeopardy reruns.

Running 47:00 intensity: (7:00 @1) + (28:00 @2) + (12:00 @5)

Track intervals in the morning, 8x400 with 1 minute rest. It was nice and cool early in the morning, with the sun just starting to peek out above Mt. Sentinel as I was finishing up. I aimed for 90 seconds per interval, based on the suggested interval paces for my current speed.

The pace felt hard, but sustainable. My left hamstring tightened up a bit towards the end, so will need to watch that. And my back hurt, as always. Nice to get out and do a hard session first thing in the morning.

T.rex training 35:00 [1]

Core with Alli.

Smart Lidar people: can anyone find useful Lidar data for Missoula and its surroundings?

Running 1:14:00 [3]

I ran up Mount Sentinel from Missoula and met up on top with Alli and her parents, who had hiked up. It was steep, including a couple of stretches that were too steep for me to run. The time to the peak was about 65 minutes, including two stops. This was just under 2000 feet of climb. We then all walked down together.

Running 31:00 [2]

Running race 11:47 [5] 3.0 km (3:56 / km)

So one of us had the bright idea to do a time trial at the beginning of the summer and another one at the end to see if we can improve. After some discussion, 3km was agreed upon, and that was the end of that big talk, I thought. Then - bam! Ross went and ran his 3km, so we all had to do it.

I decided to get it out of the way my first day in Missoula, even though I was feeling pretty beat up from the road, and my back was acting up. I wasn't sure what time to expect, but I thought I could run 90-95 second laps. After one 90 lap, it was quickly apparent that 95 was far closer to the truth. It was a struggle, but after four laps you are already more than halfway, so not too hard to convince yourself to finish. This is certainly the slowest I have felt (or been) in a long time (maybe since early high school), but the hope is to improve from here, so good to have a benchmark.
