Race Evaluation

NW Cup & WA Champs: Course 5: Day 2

Sergey

1. After yesterday good run is ready to repeat it. Looks like it may be true :) Just went straight on the bearing, right of the hill, check on small cliff, here is control to the right ~20m - I expected it to the left. Hmm
2. Confused parallel features
Hesitated
+01:00
Run without problems up to the control site which is thickets SW side, run around - no control bag. OK - this is middle of 3 thickets so lets check the next one :) Run around the second one - no control bag :( Where in the world is this #$@% control bag? Ran back to the previous thickets and ran around it very slowly and carefully looking for any signs. Here it is - hidden in the bushes! They should not do this to poor runners - we are harting enough running on these leg melee stony grounds.
3. OK. Lets continue the race. Took the big valley leading to control. Passed 3 small hills and here is control. No brainer.
4. Took a chance
Bad compass work
+02:30
Here is my major mistake. I always repeat myself "Use the compas, use the compass". Instead I took the chance and tryed to use only features. Map is not god in this area and guess what - 350 m error - I finished on the cliff at the right. Whoa, it may cost me this race. Just relocated along the cliff. Saw Bill C. approaching the control from down.
5. Down to the road, along the road to the top of big gully, across to the side of next big gully, down to road, here is control at the left ~20 m. Bill C. is behind me holding good grip :)
6. Simple leg contouring, climbing a little bit. Map is kinda strange - some of the significant features missed. At the control it should be more like depressing. But Bill C. is behind :)
7. +00:20Went up the gully from control. Oops, some thorny bushes and I am running in short. I would look very handsom with those bluddy legs :) Nevetheless, I am going straight along the contour line. Bill C is somewhere higher. I saw him striding the tall grass. Passed the gully. Map is strange and got me confused so I decreased the speed and even stopped. Bill C. is going full speed by me. Whoa he is on the course! Better to power my legs. Punch right after Bill.
8. Still behind the mighty Bill. Looks like he is training lately. We just hit the road and run almost to the gully with control. Down the side of gully. Here is control below the rock. Time to make some time :)
9. Read map too late
Did not like map
+00:30
Run hard on the bearing passing control from yesterday in the small depression in the gully, left of the hill with group of trees, cliff, crossed the gully. I don't see Bill C. so I must be running quite fast this time. Oops, where is control bag? No sign of small depression. Bill C. is right here already and I am still puzzled. Map looks strange for me (of course:). Oh, we are below on the depression N of control site. Up to the gully - here is control bag. Something strange with contour lines in this place.
10. Looks like I am loosing to Erik B. - too many errors for this terrain. Oh, well, lets continue running. By the small lake, cross the marsh in the dry place, by the 3 trees, straight up to the control.
11. Next control I saw yesterday going to our first control so I just use bearing and see from ~300m. No problemo!
12. +00:20Just to the fence, around the hill, along the road. No sign of Bill C. behind. Looks like he finally became tired :) Passed some slowly going guy on the road. Here is control site. Where is this @#$%^ control bag? Slowly going guy caught with me already :( Oh, here it is behind the poll in the thick tall grass. Second hidden control on the course :O Last one :O They are merciless :(
F. Just run hard to the finish. No way I am going to beat Erik today :( Ok, next time :)
