Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 4.0 km (30:00 / km) +50m 28:14 / km

Birchen Edge
surveying the SE corner which gets overrun with bracken in the season (ie when the commission will come, if it comes), apart from a very nice little valley on the far side with re-entrants branching off it, not much there, a tumulus

2 PM

running (with map) 30:05 [3] 4.9 km (6:08 / km) +140m 5:22 / km
(injured) shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Big Moor
parked near the crossroads on the Sheffield Road, up the path and then into the terrain, before picking up the path on White Edge, across to Curbar and down through the wood, having a look at the boulders that didn't feature on the map

not fast, but pleased with the way I handle the climbs now, felt the hamstring as I came down the path below Curbar - it's the descents that disturb it - so stopped to give it a stretch and eased off

Orienteering 18:42 [2] 2.84 km (6:35 / km) +5m 6:32 / km
(injured) shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Baslow Edge
essentially along the Edge, then east along the top of the wood, with the odd diversion to find some interesting features, checking what had been included on the map (the boulder field symbols are microscopic)

7 PM

running warm up/down 14:30 [2] 2.6 km (5:35 / km) +30m 5:16 / km
shoes: Vivobarefoot Breatho trail

Morledge Estate
easy run up to the back of the estate and down, testing out the Vivo's ... all sorts of niggles because of them so returned home and changed into the old Asics

running intervals 1:38 [4] 0.33 km (4:57 / km) +30m 3:24 / km
(injured)

6 x 330m hill intervals, 30m climb: 1.38 ...

and that was all, on the jog back down the left hamstring finally tightened up as it had been threatening to do

7 PM

running 1:14:12 [3] 12.27 km (6:03 / km) +300m 5:23 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Farley Hill, Farley Moor, Sandy Lane, Bottom Moor Loop!
wanted to do one of my longer routes to get in the miles, but decided to vary it by heading up into the wood, bit ponderous picking the right paths, but a good steady run

Sunday May 26, 2013 #

6 PM

running 21:44 [4] 3.92 km (5:33 / km) +105m 4:53 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Oker Loop
ran up to the tree before mapping, as it was giong to be short I thought I'd push the pace a bit and see what happened, very dry conditions so the result was my quickest time, despite having to tip-toe around an unmoved cow, would've been interesting to have continued the rest of the loop

Mapping 1:15:00 [0] 2.0 km (37:30 / km) +60m 32:37 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

contours weren't quite right in two of the fields on the northern slope

8 PM

running 9:06 [3] 1.82 km (5:00 / km) +20m 4:44 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

home from Oker

7 PM

running (with map) 1:03:34 [3] 11.76 km (5:24 / km) +155m 5:04 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Stanton Moor, Clough Wood, Cambridge Wood, Oker Hill
almost 18 months since I've done this run, my old favourite, a few lengths of Stanton Moor then home, not much climb until towards the end, which is the opposite of most of my routes, took those climbs in my stride today, beautiful evening, bluebells resplendent in Clough Wood

few twinges in that buttock/upper hamstring area

Thursday May 23, 2013 #

Note

Seems I've made the top 300 in BOF rankings for the first time [287th], gratifying

6 PM

running warm up/down 20:34 [3] 3.62 km (5:41 / km) +120m 4:52 / km

Farley Hill, Matlock Bank
haven't been up Farley Hill for ages so I thought I'd give it a go as part of a proper warm up before intervals in the park, felt okay, and probably did my quickest time, that's the good news ...

running 25:20 [5] 6.0 km (4:13 / km) +5m 4:12 / km

6 x 1km, 90secs rest: 4.10 4.06 4.03 4.02 4.01 3.58

huh? not so quick now! didn't feel any slower than the last time, but neither was I busting a gut - maybe that was the problem, I wasn't pushing myself hard enough

think it may be time for some shorter stuff

running 8:08 [2] 1.48 km (5:30 / km) +20m 5:09 / km

easy run along the Derwent from intervals

felt a little twinge in the muscle under the gluts (butt), possibly upper hamstring, or the semitendinosus?

Mapping 2:15:00 [0] 4.0 km (33:45 / km) +100m 30:00 / km

sunny day at Birchen Edge (not quite as sunny as advertised though)

5 PM

running (terrain) 53:26 [3] 8.15 km (6:33 / km) +195m 5:51 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Birchen Edge, Gardom's Edge, Birchen Edge
after mapping, a run across the area, the sun came out properly for this one, but the air was fresh, felt very heavy-legged at the beginning, really tough going, and then I had to cross the marsh, thankfully that was relatively dry, finally got going, then had a serious energy crash around the 'back straight', when my rhythm was broken by the path around Gardom's not actually existing - it's just a ledge, but there is a way through the boulders, picked up speed across the wood and resisted the temptation to cut the run short and felt much better over the final loop back over the top of Birchen, via the plastic boulder

good work out: wood, marsh, heather, boulder fields

double-checking the SE quarry in Farley, still a few puzzles to be solved (could do with an extra contour)

Monday May 20, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:31:32 [3] 14.97 km (6:07 / km) +190m 5:45 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Lindop, Calton Pastures, Chatsworth, Beeley
good pace tonight, relatively-speaking, went out steady, but felt pretty frisky once we got to the waterfall in Chatsworth and I knew there wasn't much climb left, let go on the descent at Rabbit Warren and just ran on from there on my own, quite pleasing given the distance

3 PM

Mapping 3:30:00 [0] 5.0 km (42:00 / km) +30m 40:47 / km

mopping up operation on Farley, seeking out the last few clearings in the mid-green, checking the unidentified dots in the other section of green (hmmm), and the bits on the moor that I hadn't properly visited: that's it really, apart from checking the quarry after I draw it up, and maybe two small areas that may become useful, depending on permissions

11 AM

Orienteering race 1:00:20 [4] 9.4 km (6:25 / km) +170m 5:53 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

EM League, Bradgate Park & Swithland Wood
pretty good course, using two very different areas, turning the first into a long, fast (and east) section, in which you had to push the pace, risking tiredness in the more complicated control pick through Swithland Wood, a deceptively tricky area with indistinct paths and lots of light green

was slow to get going physically, though much of the Bradgate section seemed to be uphill, pushed hard on the dead legs (to and from the crossing point)

5) came around the spur lower than the control [10secs]
10) cut in early, to avoid overshooting, but the vegetation forced me around the far side of the control [10]
15) lost concentration, turned down the correct path at first, but thought I was wrong and ended up looping around the back of the control [30-40]
19) hesitant: didn't notice the indistinct path on the map so was a bit perturbed to see (a very distinct) path in front of me [15]
21) hesitant: the semi-open was, erm, indistingushable from the white [10]

8th, 10mins behind Richard Robinson, and 9 seconds behind JD = dammit!

Farley
mapping the quarry in the SE, very steep in places, but also several plateaus, lots of detail, good runnability, very similari to Stanton - the challenge will be legibility

running (terrain) 28:19 [3] 4.09 km (6:55 / km) +100m 6:10 / km
slept:7.25 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Gardom's Edge, Birchen Edge
set off for a quick one straight after mapping, turned into a bit of fartlek session (if 'fartlek' is the Swedish for 'goat-like'), followed paths heading up to the edge but time and again the paths disappeared into rocks, so picked my way across and down to the next, eventually found a way through, kept the pace up after that, very enjoyable

1 PM

Mapping 1:30:00 [0] 2.5 km (36:00 / km) +100m 30:00 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Gardom's Edge
first session surveying Birchen/Gardom's Edges, a test to see how long it will take and what the challenges are.

Plenty of climb and the age old question 'how big is a boulder?', also a couple of depressions that were a function of the surrounding knolls (which can't be mapped because the whole field is full of these lumps)

Farley Moor, Matlock Bank
ran home via the moor and the quarries (running to the bottom then back up through the middle to check out the state of the place - it's like the quarries in the woods at Stanton only less bramble), then back across the bank, worrying about the impact of descending on a road in o-shoes

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 4.0 km (30:00 / km) +20m 29:16 / km

more Farley: the remaining unsurveyed corners and a big block of Scotish-style light to mid-green, with heather-filled clearings, a narrow ditch, and a shooting butt! Yey.

6 PM

running 1:21:47 [3] 12.11 km (6:45 / km) +380m 5:50 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Brassington, Wigber Low, Bradbourne, Rainster Rocks
lucky with the weather, the rain passed over and we had sunshine, the route had a bit too much farm pasture for my liking

felt moderate when we started off, but got stronger, then had trouble keeping up with Paul when he kicked on to catch the guys who taken the shorter loop, good burn at the end

10 AM

Orienteering race 39:32 [5] 8.2 km (4:49 / km) +95m 4:33 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Chesterfield Urban
straight line: 6.1km
very good run, and I mean run, as I didn't bother to orienteer that much, starting with the first control which had me folding an unfolding the map to work out which side of the fence was SW - there was one stunted magnetic north line on the whole A3 map! binned loads of time in small 15sec packets, but diving into entrances too soon, missing alleyways (because of cars blocking the entrance), also lost up to a minute making a parallel error on a pretty straightforward leg

I ran pretty hard, too hard, but I held form (it was under my new 45mins threshold, with two timed crossings)

8th, almost 5mins down on Karl Marshall and Martin Ward, good splits on the two long legs (one of which preceded the parallel error)

checking a few things in Farley, looks a bit different in there now that spring has sprung, the 'extra growth is coming into leaf which makes the light green bits of the forest more obvious, discovered a knoll and a cairn which weren't visible in the snow

Farley Moor
very easy one on the nice soft (muddy) paths of Farley, ducking into the wood to see if my map was reliable, runnability has begun to deteriorate

also ran a short light green course planned as a back-up for next week (stopping to check the surrounding features - missing boulder!)

Note
(rest day)

calves okay, left a little tight, but a lot better than the first time out in the Vivos (on roads), also slight stiffness in arches off both feet, but feeling better than after BOC individual

(I say 'calves' but I could mean 'achilles' because it stretches from the sole of the foot up underneath the calf, doesn't it, and I did sense a little straining of the sole on Tuesday)

Tuesday May 7, 2013 #

running race 49:40 [5] 9.05 km (5:29 / km) +370m 4:33 / km
slept:5.75 shoes: Vivobarefoot Breatho trail

Burbage Skyline Fell Race
very pleased with this performance, my target was 50mins and I beat it, held form throughout, after the first loop thought Paul A would get away from me, but I passed him on the climb to Owler, he joined me going up to Higger and we both walked the last half, but then he dropped back, had fun going down the plummet and found I was able to keep it going up to the head of the valley, didn't see Paul again, a few guys came past me along the ridge, but I think I reeled them back in

the big difference from previous outings was deciding to race the guys 30-40m ahead of me, not the ones immediately in front and behind

wore the vivo barefoots, which was a risk, but they are very light and very grippy and really suited to rocky paths, not so good on the hard track to the finish, but it made me maintain my posture, we'll see how the calves react tomorrow

93rd (of 358), 12mins behind Kristian Jones

shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

BOC Relays, Holmbury Hill, Men's Short
well, it almost felt like we were in a race, without a proper team, JD led us out in 8th, I returned in 4th, holding off Kevin Fielding in a sprint finish, then our last leg runner wasn't at the line but that didn't matter because he took longer than the two of us combined ...

I was racing Harry Butt for much of the way, his navigation was a bit sloppy, but eventually he pulled away (took 44secs out of me in the last loop)

(on this form, a full DVO senior team might have made 2nd place on M40)

2 PM

Orienteering race 1:16:27 [4] 10.2 km (7:30 / km) +375m 6:20 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

British Champs, Winterfold
good run, satisfactory result, improvement but nothing dramatic

the mid-morning sandwich (and two dinners the day before?) solved the flat-feeling at late starts, though I didn't realy get into the race until approaching two, a couple of very minor mistakes, steady pace, and position, faded at around 45mins, but had plenty left near the end (3rd fastest to the last control!)

most time loss was pace

1) didn't see start flag (it was on the floor) and so ended up right of the line and used the path as attack point [15secs]
2) didn't pick out left around the road, chose straight option, enjoyed it, but judging by splits, lost a little time [20secs]
5) took at bad line through wood, found some grot [>20]
6) hit it bang on (slowed by car in narrow road? slowing to study long leg?)
7) ran past the crossing point which I expected to be marked (the overprint obscured the feature on the map) had to double back [20secs]
9) stopped for water
10) left route over valleys and up forest road, good route, apart from the climb at the end
12) hesitation as I reached the clearing before the control (I hesitated party because I was knackered) [15secs]

a clean run would've been 75mins

16th, 10:48 behind Bill (ahead of Dave Peel, Colin Smith)

Oker Loop
beautiful evening, couldn't resist, but with BOC on Saturday, it had to be an easy on around Oker, (again!), eye-balling the terrain

so off I went nice and steady and the first split was close to my best (huh?), nice and steady up the hill to the tree, also one of the better splits, didn't push it on the way back either, again pretty good

got some help from the firm going, I think, but pleasing and puzzling at the same time
