Hurricane Mountain Shelter to Partnership Shelter

Long day on which we successfully dodged the rain plus "had to" help eat a giant cakie when we got to the shelter. Delivered pizza for dinner was cool, too.

Long hot day with more ponies and some interesting hiking in the Grayson Highlands. (Actual hike was much longer, but we took several longer-than-usual breaks...)

Backpacking 8:30:00 [1] 22.7 mi (22:28 / mi) +800m 20:15 / mi

Vandeventer Shelter to Abingdon Gap Shelter

Our longest (deliberate) day on the trail. Trail magic at the halfway point (to within a tenth of a mile) was great - as was getting an orange from a trail maintenance worker two miles before camp. Tented due to bugs and had to descend to the "Chasm of Disappointment" to get water.

Backpacking 8:00:00 [1] 15.8 mi (30:23 / mi) +1150m 24:47 / mi

Laurel Fork Shelter to Vandeventer Shelter

Long hot day to a crowded shelter. Got "lost" in the middle when we missed the trail turning off a road after the Watauga Dam. Water was way the &*^%# down there in "The Pit of Dispair".

Mountaineer Shelter to Laurel Forks Shelter

Long, hot day, but the Laurel Falls area is truly beautiful. Shared shelter with two folks and one dog. Somehow lost Swiss Army knife in the evening.

Hot, humid day but we had the shelter nearly to ourselves and the falls were beautiful.

Orienteering race 22:16 [5] 3.0 km (7:25 / km)

Cherry Blossom Challenge at Delaware Park in Buffalo.

Did instruction for 90 minutes or so before heading out in the hot sun as basically the last starter. Since the course was simple, I decided to leave the compass and map behind and do it as a memory O. Was surprised that what I thought was a pedestrian tunnel under the highway was a bridge over it. Navigated the first eight with no trouble; went one tree too early at #9 and one statue too early at #10. Had no watch to pace myself (battery had died overnight) and felt like I was wilting in the sun. Thankfully, it was shady after recrossing the bridge. Came in second behind Mark Wolfing so I was pleased with what I did.
