Handball 30:00 [2]

Never really got in to it. Felt "funny" and unfocused. Couldn't get psyched to run and seemed to have depth perception issues but that's not backed up by "real life"

Game 1: Led 5-4, lost 5-21 (yup!)
Game 2: Led 8-0, won 21-11
Game 3: 2-2 and then our only ball cracked... I had a spare at home; Brian had left his in his car, but we were running late, so...

Billygoat race

Still feeling a bit out of it - as I have all spring, the goal was "shirt and not too many goofs". Looked around for "likely suspects" for my pack at the start and couldn't really decide. By the time we left #2, it seemed like all the likely suspects were in the same pack and I was barely hanging on in the back. Too much side hill by the ponds on the way to #3 and I was really stretching it. Somehow, I maintained contact until near #4 when I rejoined the group, albeit in the back half.

Next six controls were short and sweet and I moved to the middle of the pack. Debated E around Stuckey Pond to #11 and I think ti would have been a big win if I could have run more. Also debated skipping it, but no one else seemed to and the distance didn't seem like a big win, so I trekked on. Nonetheless, found myself a bit alone for this first time after skirting the second pond. A small group reformed near the control and it was a train to #12 and #13. Made my goal of #13 before the 50% mark.

Much of the second part of the course was white woods rather than the light green of the first half and I decided to push what I could. A decent pack headed by Francis Hogle and Eric Smith thinned out on the way to #14 and a bit more to #15. By #16 it was pretty thin and I saw only Eric and two others in front of me and no one behind. There were just the four of us taking different micro-routes leaving #17. Down the road to #19 where I debated skipping #18. Once again, none of the others did, so I kept with my plan to skip #24.

Down the ridge to #18 and back to #19; over the ridge to #20 where I came in too high and dropped to the back of our group. Good time for it as I was a bit brain dead and might have blown #21. I was last of the four of us to the road and as I went along, I decided that #22 was uphill in green and had no clean return to the road so I would skip it.

Road all the way to #23 where I was surprised to rejoin my little group. Was pretty done in, but had only 400 meters to go and nearly forty minutes so the shirt was safe. We all hit the trail with #24 a bit NE and the others ran away from me as I jogged it the rest of the way.

Just under three hours. All fine except that my knees are sore and there is quite a blister on my right Achilles that still hurts three days later.

Racquetball race 45:00 [3]

Campus championships. Due to some odd scheduling goof, there were actually only three of us - all faculty/staff. I drew the first bye and ended up losing my two round-robin matches 8-11 and 9-11. Both times I fell behind early and then caught up. Had to go immediately to my elimination round match against a rested opponent; fell behind in game 1 0-6 and lost 5-8. Won the second 8-5 and lost the third 6-8 (in a game with five ties!). Wasn't too sorry to watch the finals instead of playing them.

Raid the Rib ...with Erin and Tom Rycroft

We chose to go to Map C in the northeast even though it involved a long trail run (not our comparative advantage). We bagged the three "melt away" controls on the way out and made it to Map C without incident. Had a slight bobble at the second control and really had to slog through deadfall on the lasso, but spiked everything at our "tortoise" pace. Illness kept our pace down a bit, but we grabbed #55 on the way back and made it to the relay with ten minutes to spare. After the relay, we were gassed enough that we chose only to clean the matrix. Even that was a bit challenging after a collective brain cramp in the middle, but we made it back easily having done about as well as we could have expected.

The only "downer"? I left my O shoes in Canada.

With Brian. 'Felt sluggish and was having some depth perception problems. Brian played well enough that this mattered in the middle of the second game.

First game: 21-6.
Second game: led 8-3, trailed 10-17; won 21-17.

YardWork (Snow shoveling) 9:00 [1]

Drove back from my mom's to find an inch of wet snow on the deck (but none left on the walks). Since my New Year's resolution was to have a clean deck every Sunday, I had to shovel it even though it would clearly melt tomorrow. Wasn't going to blow the resolution in April!
