Running (hill tracks) 1:30:00 [3]

Headed out to Glen Gairn and parked about 1km E of Gairnshiel. Ran back along the road for 10 minutes to pick up the landrover track onto the hills to the S. Followed the track up onto the ridge to Carn Dearg and round eventually to Geallaig Hill, before dropping to the road at Braenaloin, then a couple of km back to the car.
Great to be out in the hills again. Most of the climb was reasonably gentle and I managed to settle into a steady rhythm to run a lot of it.
Tendon in left ankle was quite sore by the end - same one that was niggling in October.

Running (tracks) 40:00 [2]

Parked at Shooting Greens and ran down to the river. Did some intervals along the river bank and then ran back up the hill. Almost had a refusal on the hill, but just made it. Feel like I can't make myself work yet and have decided not to run the Detox - I'm not fit to race it but it would be hard to just run it steady. Need to focus on getting fit and healthy instead.
Another walk in the afternoon while Ewan rode his bike along the railway from the gliding strip. Beautiful day.

Running intervals 15:00 [4]

5 x 2' + 1' along the river bank. Struggling to make myself work.

Running warm up/down (tracks) 20:00 [2]

4:15 by the time I managed to force myself out of the house for a run, so had to take a mini petzl with me. Ran across to the other side of the woods by the main track, did a few sprints, then jogged back.
Still hoping to run the Detox 10k on Friday. Cough hasn't cleared up yet, but only got set off once I came back into the warmth at the end of the run.
Had a pleasant walk earlier in the day; along the railway from Dinnet with Pat and Martin, with Ewan riding his new bike for most of the time - made for faster progress.

Running intervals 10:00 [4]

Did 10 x 30" + 30" sprints. Felt good to be running faster again.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Time to start getting back to some discipline again!

Orienteering 1:20:00 [2]

Planning for the next night O at Balnagowan. Forest is still lovely and courses are looking good.
Feeling a bit more like running now, but cough still lingering.

Saturday Dec 27, 2008 #

Note

Felt like having a lazy day. Ended up round at the neighbours quaffing far too much mulled wine.

Friday Dec 26, 2008 #

Orienteering 28:00 [2]

Pudding Shaker at Glen o'Dee. Didn't like the sound of 6.4km round the blue course, and there was no green, so I cut from 1-8 to shorten it by ~40%. Decided to go without a compass to make it a bit more interesting. In practice it was pretty straight forward, so the lack of compass didn't really cause any problems. Kept running steadily, but didn't push.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Jogged to start, then after the finish went in search of Ewan and his granny on the yellow course. Unfortunately we didn't know where the course went and never met up with them.

Running (small paths) 50:00 [2]

Met up with Oleg at Aboyne Loch and headed up Mortlich. Encouraged Jon and Oleg to run on ahead up the hills. I walked all of the main climb. As ever, nice to get some Christmas morning exercise allowing us to chill out for the rest of the day (if that's possible with a 4-year old and 2 sets of grandparents).

Running (small paths / terrain) 50:00 [1]

Parked up near Crossroads with Jon and ran out on the big forest track to the W. Picked up a smaller path and then got out to the edge of the trees and ran along the ridge towards Craiglich. Once I'd had enough I sent Jon on to the top and doubled back. Kept it at as low intensity as possible - still feeling pretty rough.
Took a detour on the way home to take some photos. Amazing bands of mist in pockets of the valley.
Also went for a walk with Ewan and my parents in the afternoon, on Learney Hill. Bagged Ewan's 10th DR Challenge point.

Running (tracks) 22:00 [1]

Easy jog round Dess Woods with Jon. Still feeling pretty dreadful.

Monday Dec 22, 2008 #

Note

Found myself pottering in the garden for a while today, and got Ewan out for a short walk too, so I must be on the mend.

Sunday Dec 21, 2008 #

Note

First time I've missed the Morven winter solstice night run in 10 years or so, but not feeling too disappointed. I must still be ill.

Friday Dec 19, 2008 #

Note

Oscillating between sweats and shivers - feeling sorry for myself ;-{

Thursday Dec 18, 2008 #

Note

Stuffed full of cold and feeling feverish - again.

Running 30:00 [2]

Easy run. Ran out towards Kinker then dropped to the Dee and ran back along the bank, returning home up through the fields. River is still high, but must have been over-bank at the weekend, judging by the debris.

Orienteering race 1:05:52 [3] **** 4.8 km (13:43 / km)
spiked:9/14c

Started feeling grotty this afternoon. Think I'm going down with another cold - bum - but decided to do the DNC anyway. I don't know why because S Kirkhill (or Tyrebagger as it's been renamed) is not my favourite forest and something always goes pear-shaped for me there. Tonight the O mostly went pretty well (perhaps helped by not feeling much like running). A few wobbles but nothing major until no. 13 where the control was in an unmapped depression. Ian H and I swept the area a couple of times before I spotted it lying on the ground a few metres away. I was also not chuffed at the finish being hidden in another pit. Suspect others had rather bigger problems than me though, judging by the number of torches I saw in the vague vicinity of control sites!

Tuesday Dec 16, 2008 #

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Jogged down through the woods and across the burn (full) to do intervals on the old railway. Came back the long way round through the woods.

Running intervals 30:00 [4]

Did 5 x 4' + 2' on the railway. Feeling OK but not getting great distance.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Note

Mentally drained from the weekend, so decided a day off was in order.

Sunday Dec 14, 2008 #

Running 1:00:00 [2]

Headed out into Coilhallan Wood from the Backpackers Hostel with the girls. Managed to pick up tracks to take us round onto Ben Gullipen and then returned by a more direct route off the top, through near vertical bog (I always thought water was supposed to flow off the side of a hill).

Running hills 15:00 [4]

Did 8 x 1' + 1' reps up the main climb of the hill with Jo and Kirsten. Well done girls - next time you'll have to jog back to give me a chance to catch up!

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Ironic that I missed two nights stretching in a row at the weekend where we were discussing the value of such things!

Saturday Dec 13, 2008 #

Running 1:10:00 [2]

Terrain run through the forest to the S of the pass of Leny, with the girls at the SOA weekend. Wet underfoot. Forest not very interesting higher up, but some nicer bits on the lower slopes. Feeling OK, but still not very bouncy. Youngsters all seemed to be running strongly.

Friday Dec 12, 2008 #

Running 1:05:00 [2]

Run with Jon from Aboyne CC west on the railway, then up into Balnagowan. Big loop round the forest, mostly on tracks but some terrain. Both feeling tired still and a bit of a plod.

Wednesday Dec 10, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:02:06 [3] ***
spiked:11/14c

DNC at Glen o'Dee. Feeling very tired from last night's intervals - not helped by a boozy Christmas lunch outing from work. Orienteering was reasonable. Technically not too intense. Barely saw another torch out in the forest.

Running warm up/down 35:00 [2]

Short warm-up and then chummed Jon to pick up a few controls at the end - could probably have done without the extra time!

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]

First time I've made Deeside Runners training in a while. Usual warm-up out across the Aboyne Bridge and back. After intervals, did the extra loop back round Runahaven Rd on my own at the end - wimps (well except for Alan who had cycled down from Ballater. Hope he put something over his shorts for cycling back - crackers).

Running intervals 40:00 [5]

Did 20 x 1' + 1' on the roads. Felt I was going quite well at the start, but definitely struggling in the second half. Reckon I was about quits with Derek by the end. Tough session. Need to do a few more like that to get fit.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Monday Dec 8, 2008 #

Note

Rest day
Walked over to the Activity Park with Ewan for a play and a scone and hot chocolate. Just made it back through the woods before it got dark.

Sunday Dec 7, 2008 #

Running warm up/down 22:00 [2]

Out of the back of the house. Looped round and over the quarry pond hill then did some hill efforts (couldn't push myself hard enough to claim they were real reps). Warmed down with a jog down to the waterfall and back.

Running hills 18:00 [3]

4 x ~2:20 hills with jog recovery on the steep rough track from the well hut up to the top wall. Legs heavy.

Running 1:50:00 [2]

My short-lived hibernation came to an abrupt end when I looked out of the window this morning and saw Mount Battock and Clachnaben sparkling white across the valley. Parked in the main Clachnaben car park and headed out by the tourist track. It was very icy down the bottom, but my ice bugs handled it pretty well. Running up the wee valley was lovely, but once I got out onto the main slope the snow got really frustrating with a 1 inch crusted layer on top of 9-12 inches of soft snow. This meant that you never knew quite how far your foot was going to sink and my run rapidly disintegrated to a walk. Never mind, the views were amazing and I wasn't planning on beating any records. The descent was even more frustrating, as any attempt to run was liable to end in a broken leg. Bumped into Gary on my way down, out for a walk with some friends. Returned back over Mount Shade (another DR Challenge point), more frustrating snow on the climb, but a better descent. Picked up the big track through the plantation, round a wee hill and past a phone mast to take me back to my starting point.

Running 1:30:00 [4]

What a minging morning. Rain on wet slushy snow, with thick compacted ice in places. All the same I was up for a decent run and headed out to Dinnet Muir with Jon and Dan. Ran across the moor, up the side of the Vat Burn, over Cnoc Dubh, back down to the muir and back round the other side of Loch Kinord. Amazingly the overhead wetness had stopped by the time we set off, so it was only the underfoot conditions to contend with. Ice bugs and wet suit socks handled that pretty well, but I was working hard the whole time, trying not to hold Dan and Jon back too much. Good run. Think I'll go into hibernation now, since we're fairly well iced in anyhow - had to give Jon a push to get back up the track and my car's still abandoned half way along.

Running 36:00 [2]

Steady run from home with Jon. Round the woods on the bottom track, out into the fields and loop back into the woods and over the top of the hill. Feeling a bit tired from last night and still a bit stuffed up from my cold. Definitely not recovered sufficiently to do the E Districts XC on Sat.

Orienteering race 31:29 [4] ** 3.6 km (8:45 / km)
spiked:12/14c

DNC round 2 at Dunnottar woods - a completely new area to me. Technically fairly simple and I ran pretty cleanly, except for no 3 where the contour information on the map was distinctly lacking. Marnoch caught me there and we were together for a while, until he must have missed and caught me back again later. Disappointed to finish in 8th off a good run - makes me feel like a real old woman ;-{
Great night and a nice change to run through clean open forest.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

This wasn't much fun after a late tea of fish and chips washed down with copious amounts of water.

Running 35:00 [2]

Easy run in the dark round Hazlehead / Woodend. Right knee was niggling a bit - must be an underuse injury. Nice to get some fresh air after being stuck in the seminar room for a large part of the day trying to be intelligent. Now I've got to make myself presentable again to go and make small talk with some very important people (think I saw Caspian around earlier).

Running 23:00 [2]

Easy run round Dess Woods. Still a bit snotty, but generally feeling better.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Managed to draw a full arc on the floor behind my head for the first time - wow ;-} Must be all this lack of running.
