Note

Feeling less stuffed up this morning. Almost tempted to try a run, but settled for a family walk round the white course at Sluie.

Saturday Nov 29, 2008 #

Note

Still full of cold, but got out in the garden for a bit of tidying / log-stacking this afternoon.

Friday Nov 28, 2008 #

Note

Grr - beautiful morning, free time and I've got a stinker of a cold, so no chance of running.

Thursday Nov 27, 2008 #

Running 35:00 [2]

Easy run round Hazlehead. I'm going to have to devise a new route that somehow avoids all the new motorways.

Note

Woke up with a cold. Back still a bit achy too.

Orienteering race 1:14:34 [3] **** 5.8 km (12:51 / km)
spiked:9/14c

Round 1 of the DNC at Ballogie. Great course, really well planned by Eddie. Went badly awol on no. 6 . after veering off-line, thinking I was on the wrong hill. Ran round in circles for far too long before relocating off the ride and attacking the control properly. Lost ~9 minutes - probably my worst mistake since, well, last year's DNC I guess ;-} A few other wobbles too, but feeling OK physically (or at least I was). Jon 55', Dan 57'.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Short jog before the start. Warm down in the sauna.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Achy back after night O

Meeting in Birmingham.
Rest day.

Running intervals 30:00 [4]

Down through the woods, past the waterfall (impressive) and over the log jam (scary) to the old railway. Ran 5 x 4'+2' out and back on the railway. Icy, slushy, wet and muddy (if it's possible to be all this at the same time). Glutes a bit tired from skiing, but otherwise feeling better than expected and distance not too bad given the conditions.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Good session

X-country skiing 1:15:00 [2]

Decided to go back up the Clash today with Jon and Ewan to try and get the latter to try skiing for the first time. Unfortunately by the time we got there the weather had clagged in and it was damp and raw (although still just about snowing in the forest). I left Jon battling with Ewan and did another lap of the Haute Route. My skis were working much better today - contrary to what you might expect they run better on wet snow, as they weren't icing up I think. I really enjoyed it, but unfortunately Ewan had decided that he didn't want to ski today, so Jon didn't have much luck. I think that may be more or less the end of the snow for just now.

X-country skiing 1:15:00 [2]

Lots of snow - play time! Had fun sledging with Ewan in the morning, then drove up to the Clash after lunch. The road from Rhynie wasn't great, but OK with winter tyres. Only 8 cars in the car park, but enough folk had been out to make decent tracks. Skied the big loop round the Haute Route. The snow was a bit sticky higher up and I wasn't getting a good glide, but not bad for November.

Running hills 24:00 [4]

A rare treat of a run with Jon this morning. Parked at the main Glen Tanar car park and ran out past the Fairy Loch to the big track further E. Did 12 x 1' + 1' up the hill. Felt like I started well, but probably went off to fast, then suffered later in the session, dying after about 30" of each rep. Snowing fairly consistently - not much underfoot on the track, but definitely hat and gloves weather.

Running 1:01:00 [2]

Continued on from the top of the track to the summit of Baudy Meg - a DR Challenge point and Jon's 50th point (see photo on http://drc2008.blogspot.com/). it was a bit of a slog up through the heather to the top and even more of a wade back down to the contouring track round the hill, by which time we both had completely numb legs. Dropped back down by the track through the plantation, but cut off near the bottom to come out at the bottom of the Osprey track. Then cut through the woods to the river and back to the car.

Running 27:00 [2]

Needed a change, so drove out to Foggieton / Cults from work. Pleasant enough run through (what's left of) the forest.

Circuits 30:00 [2]

Circuits at home - haven't done this for ages. Did a mix of upper and lower body work. Good to get a bit of variety into my training and kept me off the computer for half an hour. Definitely worth adding in if I'm going to try and increase volume a bit over the winter.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Finished off with the usual stretching.

Tuesday Nov 18, 2008 #

Running intervals 28:00 [4]

Intervals on road at lunchtime from work. 7x3'+1'. H'head, C'wells, Craigton Road. Felt a bit sluggish at start, but settled into it OK.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Stretching 25:00 [1]

A bit of extra core work in addition to the usual stretching

Monday Nov 17, 2008 #

Running 26:00 [2]

Short run round Dess Woods on small paths / in terrain. Didn't feel too bad until I hit the hills.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Felt good (apart from the legs) and worked hard.

Cross-country race 22:38 [5]

Crathes Castle cross-country. Felt just as horrible as ever and did my best to puke at the finish. Course was a bit too firm for dobs - Innov8s or trainers would have been better. Reasonably happy with time. 2mins behind Carolyn, but still ahead of Kirsty (phew, but for how much longer...)

Running warm up/down 35:00 [1]

Decent length warm down with Carolyn and Kirsty. Could feel myself seizing up as soon as the race finished.

Mountain biking 1:15:00 [2]

Parked at Shooting Greens. Did a lap of the forest - round the S side, along towards Scolty, looped round a few smaller tracks, then dropped to the river bank and back. Passed Donald K out for a run and was conveniently able to gain an important clue from him in the mystery of the missing emit units. Sore bum by the end, but feeling energised again.

Running long 1:17:00 [2]

Struggled to get out of bed this morning and still seemed to be half-asleep when I got up to Cambus at 10:15. Did a lap of the forest before heading up Cnoc Dubh, round the back and down to Dinnet Muir, along to Burn o' Vat and then back over the top to Cambus. Was still in a dwam by the time I came off Cnoc Dubh and managed to miss my path at one stage, necessitating a 10 minute scramble back up through the terrain to get back on course. Never seemed to get out of 1st gear during the whole run.

Note

Back has been twinging since I came in from the garden this afternoon. Try a hot bath and some extra stretching tonight.

Stretching 20:00 [1]

Did a bit of extra stretching for my back. The hamstring-neural stretch (sitting / bending over one leg / pulling foot towards you) seemed to help most.

Running 41:00 [3]

Lap of Hazlehead from work at lunchtime. Most disappointed to see yet more of the small forest paths being turned into motorways. Feeling fine.

Running tempo 40:00 [3]

No chance of getting out at lunchtime today with a full day of meetings. Headed up to Aboyne after I got home and did a steady 40 minutes at a reasonable pace. Feeling fine physically, but mentally drained.

Note

10 hours of sleep and I don't feel too bad today. Still tired but glands seem to have gone down. Think I'll take another rest day just to play safe.

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Everything was working much better this week. Legs feel good.

Note

Rest day
Think I'm going down with a lurgy. Glands feel swollen and generally feeling tired.

Running long 1:30:00 [3]

Out the house just after 08:30 - miracle. Ran along the old railway, before starting the climb towards Mortlich over the top of Little Hill first. My legs turned to jelly as soon as I started the steep climb to the top, but I managed to run it all, just. Dropped back down the same way and then crossed the bog, ran through the woods to Aboyne Loch and then returned along the railway. Legs felt pretty good by the end.
Walked up Scolty with Ewan while Jon was helping with junior training.

Running 30:00 [2]

An easy run round Dess Wood. Out past the waterfall and along the bottom, then back over the hill. Feeling tired. Never really got going.
Also went swimming with Ewan and did an hour and a half or so in the garden (including some muck shifting).

Running hills 32:00 [4]

Got Ewan into the creche for 2 hours so headed up the Fungle. Feeling tired (not helped by a couple of glasses of vino collapso last night I guess) but determined to do some hill reps. Managed 8 x 2' + 2' up the Fungle, continuing over the Guard towards Carnferg.

Running long 1:01:00 [3]

Once I reached the big track below Carnferg I followed it S round the side of the hill into a strong headwind and driving rain. Glad I brought the windproof, just a shame I decided against bringing my hat. The plus side of the wind was that I got a good lift when I turned back up the track towards the top. Didn't stop at the top of Carnferg - no view today and I'd have got hypothermic in no time. Dropped directly back to the Fungle and the shelter of the trees. Back to Aboyne Bridge the same way in 93' total. Character building. I need an easy day tomorrow, or else I'll start falling apart. Hope Ewan's nice to me this afternoon.

Running 30:00 [2]

Steady run on small paths at Kingshill. Can feel yesterday's intervals in my legs for sure.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Gluts felt particularly tight to night. Noticed them whilst running too. Yesterday's speedwqork I guess.

Wednesday Nov 5, 2008 #

Running intervals 24:00 [5] 4.0 km (6:00 / km)

8 x 500m with ~1min recovery on the measured 'track' at Hazlehead. Splits were (d'hill / u'hill) 1:54, 2:01, 1:54, 2:04, 1:55, 2:05, 1:53, 2:03. Good conditions - no wind. Legs were feeling great - seemed to have some spring in them for the first time in ages. Gives me hope that I can get some speed back with the right work. Now to fall asleep at my desk. Zzzz.....

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Warm up / down out to Hazlehead from work

Tuesday Nov 4, 2008 #

Running 43:00 [2]

Decided I probably wasn't quite recovered enough to do a good interval session today, so went for a steady run round Hazlehead at lunch time. Legs didn't feel too bad - try and do intervals tomorrow instead.

Monday Nov 3, 2008 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Felt I wasn't doing too badly until it came to the foot raises sitting on the ball, when Emma made a comment about me looking tired. Can't get away with anything!

Note

Rest day
Joined my work colleagues for a 'jolly' in the Glensaugh catchment. Walking for an hour or so, but nothing too strenuous. Had thought about running back to my car at the top of the Cairn, but sensibly thought better of it and got a ride back up in the bus.

Running 2:25:00 [3]

Jon had first option on running today and headed off up Lochnagar with Dave and Gary. Whilst they were doing that Ewan and I had a walk up Craigendarroch. The views were fantastic and Lochnagar was sparkling white and crystal clear. Drove up to Loch Muick to meet the guys, exchange Ewan and then set off on part 2, which was to be a run up Broad Cairn for me. Ran along the lochside and then climbed to the plateau by the zig-zag land rover track. The snow line was quite low, but there had been enough people up to compress a neat track. Made good progress up the hill and reached the top (another DR challenge point in the bag - see http://drc2008.blogspot.com/) in around 85 minutes, including several photo stops - the views were fantastic. As well as being really clear it was incredibly still and didn't feel at all cold. Disturbed some ptarmigan coming off the top - still looking a bit speckled in colour. Returned via the diagonal path down to the end of Loch Muick which gave a lovely descent, as the snow on it had also been well compressed. What a cracking day!

SOA meeting Perth

Running 25:00 [2]

Running out of daylight by the time the SOA meeting had ended, but managed to sneak in a short run with Donald, Paul and Scott, round Kinoull. Great just to get a breath of fresh air and stretch the legs after sitting in a meeting room all day.
