Woke up with niggling right leg and a bit jaded post-party. Lots of snow on the ground. Headed out in trainers with the intention of seeing how leg was and doing a road run assuming all okay.

Took the road through Lodge Moor towards Redmires initially (past the car park for the SYO event at Rivelin!) and leg seemed okay, plus not too icy underfoot and the weather looked quite pleasant…..so changed plans and took the track up to Stanage. Nice up there but brutally strong and icy wind along Stanage Edge where progress was v slow across the snowy rocks. Got to Burbage Bridge having done 8 miles in 80 minutes!

Picked up a bit after that except back along Houndkirk into the fierce wind again, almost came to a total standstill a couple of times. Much milder lower down once into Porter Valley, tracks clear of snow and sheltered from the wind. Welcome by that stage! Leg okay running and seems no worse afterwards.

Down to Parkrun. Zzzz.

Running 19:23 [4] 3.81 mi (5:05 / mi) +63m 4:50 / mi

Parkrun in Endcliffe Park. Not feeling too lively so a steady start. Could see Martin W ahead and he seemed to be holding back a bit which let me catch him early on the second lap. Moved past on the gentle ascent but inevitably was re-passed on the downhill stretch back down Rustlings Road.

Slightly quicker than half-marathon pace from last Sunday. Not as quick as the first 5km that day though!

Running 30:59 [3] 3.54 mi (8:45 / mi) +134m 7:50 / mi

Up the park with Martin and MikeS, then further up Porter and back through Fulwood with Mike.

Loop round Endcliffe to warm up, 12x1min on/off with first six up Porter and the rest of them back down, jog round Endcliffe to finish.

Tired legs, think Parkrun in the morning may be slower pace than half-marathon last Sunday!

Down into Bringewood with MC to explore the two aqueducts spotted on the map. Two impressive things to find in the middle of nowhere!
Turns out they are the quaintly-named Deepwood Dingle aqueducts which are part of the Elan Aqueduct carrying drinking water to Birmingham from the Elan Valley in Wales.

From there MC headed back whilst I took a circuitous trail then country road route back to the cottage. Just back before dark!

Back from Croft Castle (venue for SinS 2013 according to the National Trust man who kindly sold us an o map) to the cottage, partly along the Mortimer Trail. The Mortimer Trail is designed to be walked north to south which is my excuse for the bits where I failed to follow it correctly in a south to north direction..

Fantastic day again, cloudless blue sky although still very hazy. Walked up onto the south nose of the Long Mynd with MC and ran along the spine of it from there. For a long time we had the place to ourselves, following a grassy track between swathes of heather, running towards a clear blue horizon with the sun on our backs. Holiday is good :)
Dropped down CardingMill valley towards Church Stretton, where MC headed on and I turned round...

Running 1:06:26 [3] 7.2 mi (9:14 / mi) +192m 8:32 / mi
shoes: Brooks Ghost4 Aug 2012

....to climb back up for a repeat run along the spine in the sunshine, back along and down to collect the car. Had the place pretty much to myself again after the first twenty minutes, just a pleasure to be out.
Persuaded myself into 8x30secs on the last section, legs feeling pretty tired though and they were a tad half-hearted. Doing them today means an easier day sometime later in the week though!

Gentle recovery trot from the cottage with MC - walk/jog up to the highest point (no clouds but far too hazy to see much), then jog back a different way.
A bit stiff in the ankles initially after yesterday but loosened off fine, nice gentle run just what was required.
