Hiking hills (Yukon Kluane NP) 2:53:28 [5] **** 8.14 km (21:19 / km) +619m 15:26 / km
shoes: Merrell Moab

Francis, Andrew and I drove to Kluane NP early in the morning, with the goal of climbing the King’s Throne path up the King Mountain. Along the way we stopped to admire the Takhini Valley. We reached Kluane just before noon and parked at Kathleen Lake near the beginning of the King’s Throne trail.
Started up the Cottonwood Trail with the warning sign about grizzlies in the area at the trailhead. We said a little message to Grandfather Bear to let us have a peaceful trek. We had our bear spray just in case! Quite a few people already on the trail, including young families.
The start of the trail - an old mining road - took us through lodgepole pine and alder woods, then we rapidly switched to hiking on rock and scree switchbacks to the summit in the King’s Seat. Windy as all heck at the top! You could lean into the wind and not fall! In some trail sections we had to resort to ascending crouched over with our hands on the ground. Exciting!!!
Stopped in the Seat (cirque) for a snack and a chat with a few other hikers and a photo op. Looking down below we could see helicopters far beneath us flying over the lake, where we had parked the car. Beautiful scenery!
We opted to NOT hike the narrow and dangerous trail up around the rim of the cirque, as the wind was just too strong. I’d say there was about a 10C drop in temp from the trailhead to the Seat. A very fun adventure, and a great experience!
The descent was much faster (of course), and it was all we could do in some spots to not tumble along as the mountain pulled us down.
Stopped to warm up in the sun when we got back to the car.
After this we drove to the park museum in Haines Junction for a good visit there, and then on the way back to Whitehorse spent some time on a glacier-fed stream along the highway. Crystal-clear and cold water!
What a gorgeous park!!!

Warm up jog down Two Mile Hill from Takhini subdivision, then back up from the bottom of the hill. Cool, pleasant. Getting ready for canoeing down the Yukon Ruver!

Kayaking/Canoeing 2:25:19 [3] 19.25 km (7:33 / km)
shoes: Keen sandals

Gorgeous paddle down the Yukon River from the Canoe People store to the bridge. Saw bald eagles and explored the cliff-sites and little inlets along the way. Fast current with us all the way! Great paddling experience. Got our photo taken by Richard from Montreal at the take-out by the Takhini River/Yukon River junction.
