Back on the trail, this time to hit some high peaks (>4000 ft NY mountains) that last time we did them we were in the clouds. We did Iroquois (#8, 4840 ft) Algonquin (#2, 5114ft) , and Wright (#16, 4580 ft) via Avalanche Lake, in the reverse direction as last time. Avalanche Lake was a beautiful as we remembered it, or even more so considering this time it was 70F and sunny instead of 40F and rainy. Hiking up the back side of Algonquin/Iroquois was pretty steep, all boulders, but it actually went pretty well. Overall ascent was about 2300 ft top to bottom, but had some ups and downs in between so it was actually ~3400 according to the GPS. Got to the summit of Iroquois at 12:30 and ate lunch (crackers, pepperoni, and cheese - worked well, will consider for longer AR). The down and up to Algonquin and again to wright all went pretty quick, then the long down from Wright was slow, knees started to give out. We could see 10-15 miles from the top of all of them despite the summer humidity haze, which is a far cry from the 10-15 feet we could see last time. The top of the mountains were cooler with a slight breeze, but not enough that we needed to pull out the jackets, and we even ended up getting a little sun - that never happens for us in the ADKs!
Slight knee/heal pain similar to nitrogaine bothered me the whole hike, but it never got worse, and it wasnt crippling, so I'm not really sure what to make of it. Hadn't felt it for the last 2 weeks, so hopefully it disappears again.
We definitely tackled this hike a little slower than our previous pace hiking up here, but I think part of it was a diminished drive since we had done them before. Neither of us were feeling 100% either. That being said, it was definitely worth the hike, and a great reminder of how much I miss this. If we can make it back every 2 years for a hike like this I'll be happy.
