6am start for the next Rocky Road Runners race.

3 lap course around the MTB tracks at a local Scout centre, with the first lap having a bonus out and back up a hill with a mobile phone tower at the top. Something like 160-170m club in just over 1km (AP seems to have rounded the climb well down from what other sites claim!).

Probably should have taken my head torch for the first lap. It was pretty dark for the first 20ish minutes and I couldn't keep up with the leader. Happily another bloke seemed happy to sit on my tail until it got light enough to see properly and his torch gave me enough light to survive, as long as I took things a little easier than I might otherwise have done.

The big hill was definitely a case of walking most, and jogging the flatter bits. Couldn't help myself coming down fairly quickly for the most part, but this pretty much trashed my quads.

The first lap took an hour-ish, and by early on the second lap, I was starting to skim the top of rocks with a lower foot lift. Early in the third lap, I took a tumble over a nothing, but didn't do any serious damage. Hardly surprising given I've done one run over 95 minutes this year, probably need to go a long way back to find a run approaching 2hrs...

Survived to the end better than expected, but going to be a bit tired and sore for a while. Surprisingly even splits for laps 2 and 3 (third lpa felt like a real struggle.)

Finished 5 minutes behind Rhys (ran a 2:46 marathon when I ran a 90 minute half a few weeks ago) and 2 mins down on Matt, who overtook me at the start of lap 3 (he ran a 1:21 half at the Rocky River run).

Given 5km felt hard at the start of the year, things are going ok.

Note

Had my echocardiogram and specialist review today. Given my recent reduction, then cessation of medication and his view of the merits of fleccainide, current instructions are:
- keep exercising
- don’t worry about the ectopics; they’re not dangerous
- don’t take any medication
- no need for a regular review, just see you doctor if you think things are getting worse

For once I think I can do what I’m told!

run 19:11 intensity: (15 @1) + (18:51 @2) + (5 @3) 5.01 km (3:50 / km)

This was not the plan when I drove down to run with RRR. Instead of the usual 6km-ish cruise it was the 3rd State if Origin run, which, unlike the real thing was not a dead rubber.
Rhys and Blase mentioned running at ‘around 4min k’s’ which I thought sounded manageable, if a bit uncomfortable with no warm up.
First km 3:50 - marginally faster than my fastest 5km pace for the last few years. Still comfortable for Rhys (about 5sec/km faster than his marathon pace)… Fortunately the 2nd km felt better than the first, so I pushed on. Pretty happy with the time, pretty miffed by the HR data…

run intervals 57:39 intensity: (19 @1) + (48:43 @2) + (8:37 @3) 11.36 km (5:04 / km)
ahr:134 max:153 shoes: x-talon 230

5x100, 4x200, 3x300, 2x400, 1x500 @5km pace with 30 sec standing recoveries. Then repeat. Got pretty hard by the end, probably because I was running faster than 5km pace because the reps were so short.
Heart felt pretty out of whack for much of the session. Never used to have issues running. Had started to feel a few flutters since stopping meds, but only in the warm up.
Having an echocardiogram booked for Thursday morning may not be a bad thing.
