running 1:17:00 [3] 16.1 km (4:47 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Took a copy of a street-o map from the winter series. Home to the start, round through all the controls and then back home again. Got to see some of the back streets that I normally don't run along. Once the run got going it felt pretty good. The map was divided by the train line and did the series of short legs north of the line first, then opened up on the longer legs out to teh west and south of the line.

Dancing 1:30:00 [1]

Long session on samba. Different action required to get the bouncy step which defines the dance. Slow progress.

Friday Nov 28, 2008 #

running 52:00 [3] 11.0 km (4:44 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Early run, otherwise it wasn't going to happen. Normally you can see the city and accross the bay from along the Esplanade. Not this morning. It wasn't till the timeball tower that the city buildings were vaguely visable, then there was the eerie sight of a ship coming up the bay appearing through the gloom.

Thursday Nov 27, 2008 #

running 38:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:45 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Was a bit worried about the run. I don't mind rain, but I am not keen on the possibilities of lightening and hail. Run was a bit shorter because I waited until the storms had cleared.

Wednesday Nov 26, 2008 #

running 59:00 [3] 12.4 km (4:45 / km)
shoes: asics overdraft (red)

New shoes for todays run. Realised that the current pair weren't going to make it to teh Christmas sales without some help. Decided to try and have two wearable pairs and rotate to see if that gives better mileage.

pseud-o 45:00 [3] * 10.0 km (4:30 / km)
spiked:16/18c shoes: kyano 14

Pretty forgetable effort. Wasn't really feeling much like running before the start, but once I started felt better. First 3 controls were OK, and then made a route choice error. Then the next control wasn't where it was marked and I ran straight past it. Was navigating by the map. Realised when I was looking in the spot marked on the map and read the clue, turned around and went back. Headed to the next control on the list and things were still recoverable at that stage as I worked out how to go through the rest of the controls. Reasonably smoothly through the controls and got to what should have been the last one only to discovere I was 1 short. What should have been 200m to the finish turned into a 1.5k to pickup an extra control. Bugger! Turns out that I completely missed one of the controls while concentrating on picking the route choice ahead. Would have only taken an extra couple of hundred meters to pick it up, if I had realised at the time, or if I had done the count one control earlier it would only have taken 400m or so, as I had to run past my second last control to pickup the extra one. If I had checked when at the previous control the distance penalty would have been about 400m. I think the other comeptitors were surprised by the loud expletive when I realsied the mistake.
Only consolation for the night was the actual running felt much better than I had anticipated beforehand.

running 49:10 [3] 10.6 km (4:38 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Late afternoon run through Jawbone to the old racetrack and back. The bay was much calmer than for the last couple of days. No surfers at Willie beach tonight, unlike Saturday.

running warm up/down 5:00 [2] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: kyano 13 - red

Warm up and jog after sprint champs

orienteering race (sprint) 18:20 [4] *** 3.6 km (5:06 / km)
ahr:169 max:178 spiked:11/13c shoes: kyano 13 - red

Vic sprint chaps. My first ever sprint race. Started OK, but then was slow from 1 to 2 and spent 15 sec or so at 2 before I spotted the control tucked away in a corner. 3 and 4 were OK and then looked quickly at the map for 4 to 5 and said I know the road and headed out of the control in the wrong direction. Started down the wrong road. Looked at the map again and it dawned on me. Turned roud and started going in the right direction. Dropped 1:40 on the leg. No further problems and gradually picked up time over the rest of the course, but the damage was done.

orienteering race (Campus challenge) 24:30 [4] *** 5.15 km (4:45 / km)
spiked:18/18c shoes: kyano 13 - red

Good run. Well clear of the pack on course 2. Had a repeat of the leg I stuffed in the sprint champs, ra it 1:40 faster like I should have the first time.

running (control pickup) 12:00 [2] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: kyano 13 - red

Ambled round picking up controls . Thought I had waited until all the stragglers were back, but was just picking up my last control when I met a very very late comer. Had both the controls he was heading for , so he punched then in order. Watch for the 5 second split on a 250m leg.

running 27:00 [3] 6.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

First stage of a run in three parts. Round willie gardens and then out through jawbone reserve. Fairly even pace and worked reasonably into the wind.

running 12:30 [4] 3.0 km (4:10 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Part 2: turned round at the end of jawbone and picked up the pace back to willi beach

running 3:00 [2] 0.6 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Part 3: Jog home

Thursday Nov 20, 2008 #

running 51:30 [3] 10.1 km (5:06 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Slow morning. Overcast and windy and really didn't feel like pushing.

Wednesday Nov 19, 2008 #

running 53:40 [3] 11.7 km (4:35 / km) +60m 4:28 / km
shoes: kyano 14

Squeezed in a lunchtime run. Docklands and back. First time in many weeks and had to weave my way through the tourists on the docklands pier. Plenty of promotion for the new wheel, but given its location it hard to imagine the views living up to the hype.

Tuesday Nov 18, 2008 #

running warm up/down 5:00 [3] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

Shortish warm down after the race

pseud-o race 40:30 [3] * 9.4 km (4:19 / km) +100m 4:05 / km
spiked:17/18c shoes: kyano 14

Good race at Maribyrnong parklands. Headed south out of the start to pickup the controls on the other side of the river to give some more thinking time about the route choice on the north side, joined by Bryan Ackerly and Matt Schepsi. Follow the leader until we went back accross the river. and split. Saw Bryan again going the opposite way, but didn't see Matt until the last control when he cam in just behind me. Conceeded the sprint down a rough grassed hill and through the carpark to the finish. Ended up 6th. Matt was 4th 20m infront and one of the pack that had headed north slotted in between. A very tight finish. Comparing distances afterwards Matt ran 40m more and Bryan, who was 3rd ran about 200m more. So route choice was good, just a bit down on running speed. Not a bad result considering I was giving away between 10 and 30 years on the rest of A grade pack.

Monday Nov 17, 2008 #

running 49:30 [3] 10.1 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Gentle lunchtime run around the beach and back. It was only over the last couple of k that the pace picked up at all.

Dancing 1:00:00 [1]

Revision of last weeks new steps. Correcting the misinterpretations and errors.

Sunday Nov 16, 2008 #

running 1:19:40 [3] 16.0 km (4:59 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Out early, before a busy day of social events. A bit slow to get going and then was happy to just roll along at 5 minute pace.

Friday Nov 14, 2008 #

running 47:20 [3] 10.0 km (4:44 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Out reasonably late afternoon. Had to wait at home for a plumber to take a look at the spout that retained water and some other issues. I really hate it when they treat you as if you have no idea. You explain the problem and they look down their nose as if to say you don't know what you are talking about. It is even worse when the work should be covered by warranty.

Thursday Nov 13, 2008 #

running 47:30 [3] 10.0 km (4:45 / km)

Wednesday Nov 12, 2008 #

running 57:40 [3] 11.7 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Backedup for a 5:30 morning run. took things slowly

Tuesday Nov 11, 2008 #

pseud-o 48:00 [4] * 10.8 km (4:27 / km)
spiked:16/18c shoes: kyano 14

Warm night for teh first event of the season. Decided to approach these as a thinking mans training run, and do them as a tempo session. An early decision meant I was committed to a sub-optimal route, but it was the type of course where you were never sure about what was the optimal route. Ran 20m or so pst a couple of controls when I didn't read teh clue fully enough, and then misread teh map heading to the finish and had to double back 50m. Still managed to finish a creditable finish. I think this was due to people continually reappraising the route they were doing. At the post mortem everyone was debating what ws the best route.

Monday Nov 10, 2008 #

running 44:50 [3] 9.2 km (4:52 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Early run and was slow to get going Out in 23 and back just under 22.

Dancing 1:30:00 [1]

Extended session. Brain hurt trying to remember the new steps.

Sunday Nov 9, 2008 #

running 1:08:00 [3] 14.6 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Late afternoon run, after some gardening and house work. Pleasant conditions with a bit of a sea breeze.

Friday Nov 7, 2008 #

running 53:10 [3] 11.1 km (4:47 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Another early start. Warm humid morning hope this means plenty of rain for the weekend

Thursday Nov 6, 2008 #

running 45:00 [3] 9.3 km (4:50 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Relaxed early run, just cruising along.

Wednesday Nov 5, 2008 #

running 52:40 [3] 11.6 km (4:32 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

Good run at lunch time. Was warmer and more humid than I expected. A couple of liners tied up at Station Pier, obviously here for the cup, so there were numerous rotund tourists walking around the beach front and beacon cove area.

Tuesday Nov 4, 2008 #

running 42:20 [3] 9.0 km (4:42 / km)
shoes: kyano 13 - red

Better than yesterday. Legs felt reasonably OK and the head was clear. Good morning for a run with a cool breeze.

Monday Nov 3, 2008 #

running 40:30 [3] 8.1 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: kyano 14

After spending a large part of the weekend either in bed or crouched over the bowl wasn't too sure how this was going to feel. Took it slowly and survived. About all the system really wanted to do.

Dancing 45:00 [1]

Was originally booked for 90 minuutes, but decided to take it a bit easier.

Sunday Nov 2, 2008 #

Note

Feeling a bit bettter than yesterday, atleast the room wasn't going round and round so much, and managed to retain breakfast. Decided to take things easy for the day, although got a small amount of light gardening in late afternoon.

Saturday Nov 1, 2008 #

Note

Woke to the sensation of the room going round and round. Even with the eyes shut. Tried a small amount of breakfast and brought it straight back up again, so retired to bed for most of the day.
