Forest Orienteering race 58:12 [4] **** 7.2 km (8:05 / km) +320m 6:37 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280

NOL Long - Kangaroo Crossing. M17-20E - 3rd place.

My ankle was sore in the morning before I started warming up but once it was strapped up and I had my shoe on I felt like I could run with it ok. Started out very conservatively to get into the map, and hesitated a lot as I wasn’t confident on the map yet (lost about 1 minute on Matt). Took the next leg also very slow as it looked like a super tricky control. Had a drink here as I was feeling a little thirsty and then made a small error on 3 (stopped too early, 20 secs). The long leg was next and I decided early that I didn’t want to do a lot of descending with my ankle and ascending with my knee so chose the track route, cutting of a few corners. I left the track at the big bend and picked off features all the way to the gully that led up into the control. I think I had the fastest split for this leg and I managed to read ahead to control 5 and 6 (looking back probably could have read more controls ahead).

Took the low route to 5 (think straight may have been better) and then tried to go straight to 6. When I got into the gully I got confused if I had come far enough/gone to far and slowed a lot. I hesitated my way up the gully to eventually find the control (after I relocated off the rocks to the right). Lost about a minute here but comparing splits with Ludvig showed I was still in front of him here. I lost 3 minutes on him from here to the finish, although only just over 2 minutes was in mistakes, he was just running faster in places.

Was trying to regather myself to 7 but was unsure along the whole leg, resulting in a few stops and a S-shaped route across the red line (approx. 1 min loss). Was good on the route to 8 but didn't have a definite attack feature, which resulted in me running away from the control (which I was pretty much next to) and coming back (another min loss). Slow to 9 to regather myself and then picked up some speed from here to the finish. Small miss at 11 (20 secs) when I stopped too early. Caught Henry here and we raced quite speedily from here to the finish.

Overall I was quite happy with my race, the three main errors I made were all in a row and were in the more vague area. This and the fact that they were near the end of the race reminds me that I need to maintain focus throughout the entire race and use an error as a concentration cue, not a cue to run off like a headless chicken.

A little disappointed with the length of the course as I was hoping for a long tough race that could prepare me for the JWOC long distance. I can understand why we should have a 70 minute winning time (although I believe an 80 minute winning time would be more appropriate) but having a winning time that could have been sub 55 doesn't really cut it. These races are those that best simulate those we will run when we go to JWOC so why not make them as tough as a JWOC long distance race. Would have loved to run up in the M21E race but unfortunately this couldn't happen.
