Track 15:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (5:00 @3) 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

BHS track around 3p. Really wrong time of day but had to be back at 4 & too busy in am. Walked & jogged alt 100s. Mind elsewhere.

Saturday Jun 29, 2013 #

Track 20:00 [1] 1.6 km (12:30 / km)

200 walk between runs.

Track 16:52 intensity: (7:18 @2) + (5:27 @3) + (4:07 @4) 2.6 km (6:29 / km)

BHS track, Sat pm, bright, sunny, dry, some west wind - about perfect. I was the only one there. No plan, just glad to be away from woods, deer flies. 504, 151,147,139, 46, 214,149,142. Some inclination to go fast but felt a twitch after the 46 & thought the better. Useful to run some 7' pace (145) even if only for 400 as it began to be less of a struggle - used to call that "work hardening" in occ health.

Note

305 - lost it Monday, entered eBay auction Tu eve, "won" it Wed pm, arrived here Sat midday from Tulalip, WA . Was thinking I wouldn't have for vacation, leaving Monday. Its arriving Sat left me speechless. Had no choice in manner of shipping. However, sender sent USPS priority mail. Labeled used but doesn't look used at all.

Trail/woods running 37:07 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (32:07 @2) 3.0 mi (12:22 / mi)

Bog Meadow loop around 6p, cool enough, sun had been out but returned to gloom in woods. Really an experiment in self-flagellation considering the DFs which were remarkable. If only someone would put the plug in the Bog, it would fill up in a flash. Found these on the trail. Started looking out for 'preemies' some years ago - usually don't see til July. It's always an impressive green jungle this time of year.

Walking 20:00 [3] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

Slough & back, a gray, drizzly, gloomy period. Bull frogs in chorus. Old Z in mock pursuit of a deer along the PL.

Rained cats & dogs yest. pm. by the time we got back. Umbrellas were mandatory!

Trail/woods running 14:30 [2] 1.1 mi (13:11 / mi)

BHS woods & fields with dogs, DFs & mosquitoes, the former dear pests, the latter detested pests.

Track 8:46 [3] 1.0 mi (8:46 / mi)

One metric mile on track, nice breeze from SE, sun not to be found.

Wednesday Jun 26, 2013 #

Trail/woods running 15:00 [2] 1.4 mi (10:43 / mi)

At BHS, around 8:30, felt cool initially. Warmup along trail thru a patch of woods then onto soccer field, FDFs chasing me all the way. Had to get onto the BHS tarmac to be rid of them.

Track 17:13 [3] 2.0 mi (8:36 / mi)

2 metric miles w/ 1/2 lap walk between, more work than I might imagine. Became hot enough to remove singlet on second. Overcast, humid.

Note

Went to Wellesley after Manchester airport with sister Beth and my Beth. Sister wanted to see the campus where mom went many years ago. I've been there on & off but was really impressed with the bucholic character, lovely trees, stretches of lawn, buildings, pond, lake etc we noted - in places, a university in English countryside. Did check in at the Campus Center to see how I fared in eBay pursuit of a replacement 305 - got one with shipping for $113 - no bidding activity to speak of fortunately.

Road running 1:08:00 [2] 5.5 mi (12:22 / mi)

New North Haven route, Crabtree Pt Rd, West District and return. Why all these years not noting? A very hot pm, led to a death nap & was still sluggish c. 6p when I went out. Lovely pastorale for recompense.

Arrived at dock in dinghy, 18” above water lvl, a dock made of planks maybe 1/2" apart but 2 cut holes, calm, no problems whatsoever but a clean “plop” signified the end of my second 305 (first lost 12/11) as it somehow found its way thru one of the holes barely bigger than largest measurement of the watch...the fateful how baffled & the loss bugged me considerably in that it was only some 8’ away but no way could I retrieve it in the dark, murky water!

10 AM

Road running 28:39 [2] 2.7 mi (10:37 / mi) +46m 10:05 / mi

North Haven, cool, overcast around midday. Found some new deadend roads & trails - that was refreshing but no circuits. Rt MTP very sore this am w/o anything I know I did to it. Got appreciably better just standing/working on the boat & did not bother me on the run. No coffee in town this Sunday am....

6 PM

Road/trail 34:03 intensity: (19:03 @2) + (15:00 @3) 3.11 mi (10:57 / mi) +34m 10:35 / mi

Around 6p, warm ashore, not so on water. Was headed toward the only market 2 mi away but took a gander down Ames Pt. road & was rewarded with some lovely views of low tide water, mudflats, pine-clad islands, old homes and fields. Visited what’s evidently the island boatyard but doubles as junk yard. Some nice stuff wasting away. Why people don’t take care of things....

Note

Drive fm Burlington to Rockland, 265 mi. Wanted to run on some rural road between Montpelier and Augusta (Wayne, Maine was the most promising being between lakes) but inaction & car stiffness set in. Took about 7 hrs to get to Rockland.

4 PM

Road/trail 44:00 intensity: (34:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) 4.14 mi (10:38 / mi) +41m 10:19 / mi

Burlington, Champlain shore. Languid start of summer by the lake, on the hot side, lots of groomed green & plenty of shade. Took a dip whose benefit lasted 15' or so. Camping for the night at the North Beach campground, our grassy tent site is on the side of a wooded ravine with a stream running thru. Lots of lakeside activity.

Tao's 12th birthday, kids, dogs & foster dogs: good pandemonium.

Walking 9:24 [0] 0.34 mi (27:39 / mi)

DP to shore line.

Trail/woods running 40:00 [2] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Woods wander at end of day, from nap to woods. Started out thinking Bower loop but trail flooding called for plan B - which led to the wandering. Should remember to take an O map along for interest as parts of Nottingcook are becoming less familiar. Recalled time spent mapping unusable woods between Rosewood & WH as I ran by last night - unexplorable pockets often beckon. Encountered a painted turtle laying eggs & hustled Z along.

Wednesday Jun 19, 2013 #

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.7 mi (28:34 / mi)

Slough & back, pest diminution as well as turtle watch. Z found found one, can tell by degree of motion of her tail (then to prevent her harming it); Mocha not the least interested.

5 PM

Road running 59:41 intensity: (44:41 @2) + (15:00 @3) 5.78 mi (10:20 / mi) +156m 9:32 / mi

BBR-WH-Allen loop (cw) around 5p - nice time of day if not hot but energy is usually less than in am. Plenty of shade except on BBR but going east then.
DFs were obscene in the woods (singlet, no cap). Nice June eve, longest days are upon us!

Had a bear at the feeder last eve - still light, heard a noise, looked up & saw a small/young bear 25' away. Almost got a photo, moved a bit to get a branch out of the way & off the litter critter shot. Little bugger stomped ferns & pachysandra - very unpopular behavior!

Trail/road 1:06:32 [2] 4.06 mi (16:23 / mi) +276m 13:32 / mi

Bear Brook for a change. Did not take a map - had planned on an old tried & true loop but, as I got near, decided on something more or less fresh which turned out to be starting at One Mile Road. From there took Catamount trail & C. Brook Tr., went thru some intersections, named and not & finally came out on a road that I suspected was One Mile Road which turned out to be true. Took a detour out of park thinking it may have been a trail staying high after the long initial climb. Gloomy, rained later. Red pine scale logging has made for considerable change on arriving.

Track 28:00 [1] 1.25 mi (22:24 / mi)

Between 400s & after.
7 AM

Walking 40:00 [1] 1.4 mi (28:34 / mi)

DP to slough with Beth. Z was on turtle patrol & found one we did not recognize (not snapper, painted or box). Sent a photo to a F&G wildlfe biologist who is studying Blandings in NH & Nottingcook. Wondered if this is one - nearly a foot long! Could then leave dogs behind for BHS track w/o slightest twinge of guilt.

Back in the evening - no turtles, could not find where am turtle was in grass.
All the am ant mounds were washed away by the heavy pm rain. Two DBer's
came by as we sat on the dunes, we flies in the ointment.
8 AM

Track 1:38 [4] 0.25 mi (6:32 / mi) +2m 6:23 / mi
ahr:138 max:152

BHS track, nice NW breeze, still early/cool. Felt good, goal was to bank some 400s at faster speed than usual. 9:16 warmup, 155, 149, 148, 147, 143, 140, 139, 138, 200 walk between. Lap warm down. GPS here for last one, HR zones were nonsensical. GPS offtrack.... Some 4 effort for a change. MHR of 152, add a second lap & it would climb a bit.

Road/trail 26:00 [2] 2.0 mi (13:00 / mi)

BHS XC track & woods DP.."Keep dogs off fields".

Track 33:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (23:00 @3) 2.5 mi (13:12 / mi)

200m walk & run for 2 mi, then 2 laps jogging. Had planned on more but best plans become worst enemies now & then. Need to 'catapult' into different mind/speedset.

Road/trail 1:00:36 intensity: (50:36 @2) + (10:00 @3) 5.65 mi (10:43 / mi) +162m 9:51 / mi

Allen-WH-BBR loop ccw. NW breezy cool, done reasonably early. Leaden legs. Three days, 3 times along WH road. Saw Sarah Pillsbury on WH jogging & Ken Demain drove by turning into Allen.

Friday Jun 14, 2013 #

Road running 52:13 intensity: (42:13 @2) + (10:00 @3) 5.5 mi (9:30 / mi)

Luti loop at noon. Brilliant June day tho shade-desiring along Clinton & seeking after. Struck by the abundance of newly minted green everywhere.
Need another local meet.

Walking 50:00 [1] 1.6 mi (31:15 / mi)

Evening DP with Beth. From BBR end of WH to midway clearing where we saw some 20 red efts. Was there just yesterday condensing spread out beer cans. Little did I know I'd be back so soon. Returned on Glacial Boulder path. Beth had not seen it. Left the woods (with a decent load of empty beer cans) around 8:20 to find daylight 'outside'. Visited Bow Highlands - had not been there in nearly 3 years...more townhouses, a good view to the east.

Possibly Bow's second largest boulder.

Not a ripple

Trail/woods running 37:12 intensity: (16:12 @1) + (21:00 @2) 2.65 mi (14:02 / mi) +49m 13:16 / mi

Rainy day "trng' - cloudless am, wanted noon run but raining by noon. Dogs had been in kennel 4 days so took them out in the rain out back. Began plastic bag whimpy & got rid of that after a while. Z&M pretty zippy - I was pretty much the opposite. But nice to be in a June green forest in the rain, esp after grays of Penobscot.

Spent close to 10' picking up sub-moron beer cans, using the bag I'd started with.

Had a fun get-together yesterday in Rockland at Malin's place with Hans & Lena, Ann and Aaron, Bob & Beth...old NEOCers and all
MA expats.

Road/trail 29:58 [2] 2.23 mi (13:28 / mi) +62m 12:24 / mi

Golf course & roads. Really a clear-the-air jog. Lots of British-American skirmish history. Came upon Musket Redoubt from 1814-5 that guarded the only crossing to Castine peninsula. Also the canal dredged by the British in 1799 in the same area.

Road/trail 42:02 [2] 3.94 mi (10:40 / mi) +88m 9:59 / mi

Saturday NR, drive to Castine for boat launch Monday.

Out for a run around 6:45 p - later than I cared for but some 'req'd' socializing which involved 2 beers as well so felt rather behind the 8 ball. Situated roadside in the center of a GC which, not surprisingly, is a first. Have sat in cockpit face to face with cows as well as looking into second floor windows. Now a golf green just aft of beam. Ran some of the GC (and some barefoot), did not find 4th tee which was across road. Then thru the streets of this genteel town.

gym 45:00 [3] 1.0 mi (45:01 / mi)

Weights & rowing at Y - made it more or less a three effort with everything.
Very rainy.

Note

Saint Paul's School map c. 2001. More campus & considerable woods. Opportunity awaits?

The plight of the blight came to mind when I saw this photo & read the caption. Symbolizes well enough.

Road/trail 35:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) 3.0 mi (11:40 / mi)
shoes: Teva

Parked at Audubon, took trail to Turkey Pond, back along bike path. Decent energy, overcast with good temp, rain on the way.

A bird in the hand

Sensed a quiet but swift passage nearby in the garage yesterday - then a fluttering of wings upstairs. Found this fellow inconveniently situated between window glass & plastic storage boxes. Probably wouldn't have bothered with the photo except that I was his namesake as a youngster. The bird didn't care one bit for me.

Road/trail 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Bright, breezy. Jog to Bog for a restart re running. Dogs encountered a large porcupine & left it completely alone - how pleasing is that! One could fix the beaver dam & make a 5 acre bog (come alive) again - 3 hours of work, raise damaged part 18-22" over c. 8' & voila, renewed water surface, not dried mud. Add to the list of things I wish I'd get done.
8 AM

Note

Stopped at the Town Pond this morning looking for the geese. None seen. Got absorbed reading an obituary in my class notes, a '68 year book photo, a young face grown old, now dead. Finally I looked up to see the family having appeared out of nowhere.

Monday Jun 3, 2013 #

Note

Yesterday's episode in delusional thinking.

GPS route explained a few things - that make sense now. Little wonder I never saw the end of the pond. Turn around was because the path needed to take me up the hill - L hand path no longer existed. That's a lot of line o course to miss, especially when approached with equanimity & "let's nail this" part....

Orienteering 1:54:23 [3] 9.14 km (12:31 / km) +178m 11:24 / km

Breakheart Junior Fund raiser Score O: hot, hot day as expected. T showers much later. Was accurate - went to all the points w/o error to speak of. Only water stop I noted was my second to last flag - didn't stop there, was nearly done. So no water which was a first for nearly two hours in the heat. No water, no cramps until driving home. Then they hit with a vengeance - 20' stop at a Mobil for stretching & OJ. Then worse (manual shift prob exacerbated), culminating in the last few miles - wanted/needed to stop but no shade & no AC in car. Spent 2 hours on the bed with a fan & fluids - most times I moved my legs, a thigh cramp (right or left, anterior, posterior, medial lead to wincing & pleading... 'when this stops, I won't move for a very long time'. Finally, mostly abatement, sat up, got up walked & ok. Never so beset with cramps.

Only problem & it was a big one was the 17:57 split between 2 flags - the one before the line O & my first found line O point. I have one 7:48 & then nothing above 6' for the other 25 points. I came to start of line O. Knew I needed to really be sure where I was. Two small trails, a knoll to right with spur but it wasn't convincing - looked green & map showed white & knoll was pretty diffuse. Ran this way & that way & back to road. Even managed to get turned around. Then basic desperation...'OK, get to NW end of major pond' (just 100m in). No pond to be found...hmm. So, ok, get to road you know is north of you. Eventually did that & then same paths & on. Was not trusting with some paths missing on map or d/c'd. Did not get first 2 flags (did not know what I might have missed). My first flag was the high point halfway thru the line O, then got 3 more. Shame, shame... 305 trace shows the foolishness.

Fun perversion considering the heat. Many nice moments in the woods. Was brain dead enough not to note contours-only section - just thinking white woods & navigated just fine. Only when I got home & recovered & studied map, did I see the somewhat subtle nakedness of the contours-only section.

Walking 2:30:00 [1] 3.0 mi (50:00 / mi)

Trail making with BOS & other helpers in KRTF off Rob Rd. Forest acclimatization as well as heat exposure training. Got there around 9:40 - they'd been at it since 0800. Had to walk a fair distance to find them. 2.5 hrs of work left me tuckered - the others had been at it another 75'. We did about 85% of the job by length. Had Z&M along at their insistence on this hot day. Bob D cut a tree early on that fell pretty hard right along the trail, every one out of the way. After that, did not see M for quite sometime. Thought she was hanging out with others but finally her absence was impossible to miss. Not present!! Called Beth to drive the short distance to look where cars were parked. M had hightailed it, apparently at the time of the crashing tree. Made sense, she can be afraid of her shadow at times. Was back in lot by a station wagon (not ours) & went right to safety of guest room & stayed there when she got home with Beth.

A really nice part of KRTF...always thinking this might make a nice O map but never get beyond that. Well, did add it to UNO lidar list but project so far prohibitively expensive. Quite open with high canopy - would need very good base map as much is rolling. Another 90+F day.
