Orienteering race 1:36:46 [4] *** 8.2 km (11:48 / km) +200m 10:31 / km

Red Course at WCOC meet at Brooksvale Park. 15 controls on 1:10000 map followed by map exchange to 8 sprint controls on 1:5000 map. Challenging to sprint after 7km of orienteering. An OK run, trying to focus on reading features and not using the compass. Vegetation and trails on the map need a bit of updating, so using the contours and stone walls was the way to go. Lost a few minutes on a couple of controls drifting off line but usually was in enough contact to recover. Nice day, 50's and mostly sunny.

EMPO Club Champs at Thacher SP - Red Course. In the northern part of the map but with a loop south of the park road for the Red course. Fairly flat with a few long, simple running legs to get from the north part to the south part of the course. Got to visit a few places on the map which I hadn't been to, in spite of having set three A-meet days plus the Billygoat on this map (~200 controls).

Was a bit sloppy on a few controls, probably because my familiarity with the map lets me get lazy and not always pay attention to the features. Also found myself drifting seriously off line while following the compass, mostly with thicker vegetation (this is not a new issue, but one that remains unresolved). Biggest error was not following my own advice and staying out of the medium green. I tried to pick my way through about 250 meters of the stuff when taking a trail around and then coming through white woods would have been faster and much more pleasant. Probably could've been about 8 minutes faster overall. Still had the fastest time on Red.

Forerunner measured 9.7km.

Picking up controls, two of which I had already been to (and one of those at a locataion I had used on the Long-O Champs in 2006).
