Sunday Jan 28 #

Note

An album of some pictures from near the equator.

4 PM

hiking (pavement) 32:30 intensity: (31 @0) + (30:33 @1) + (1:08 @2) + (18 @3) 2.92 km (11:08 / km) +42m 10:23 / km
ahr:79 max:127 shoes: Oboz Sawtooth II

Down to the lake and back. Freezing (32 F) drizzle, just lovely. The forecast was calling for snow tonight, but precipitation started in the morning and continued all day, a mix of snow and glop, which so far has accumulated to maybe a half inch. Kind of slippery. The lake appears to be frozen over, so if we get what the forecast is calling for tonight, that will probably mean no local ice this winter, although there's still hope further north or south.

Caught two mice in the garage while we were gone, total 22.

Saturday Jan 27 #

Note
(rest day)

Had to be in the hotel lobby in Guayaquil at 4:30 AM with our luggage for the trip back. Got home a little before 9 PM. No exercise logged, but we did have to walk a surprisingly long way in Miami from our arrival gate to immigration, then bag recheck, and on to our departure gate. Bus, plane, walk, plane, Uber, car.

Friday Jan 26 #

4 PM

hiking (pavement) 46:04 intensity: (14:54 @0) + (31:10 @1) 1.7 km (27:07 / km) +32m 24:45 / km
ahr:68 max:95

No real exercise today, but this was a walk with about half of the group to a supermarket in Guayaquil to buy chocolate. Watch started a little late because I was having a hard time getting satellite lock in the urban canyon, but I also stopped it late. This after bus, water taxi, speed boat, water taxi, bus, the same bus, ferry, bus, plane, bus. More travel tomorrow.

Thursday Jan 25 #

7 AM

exercises (yoga) 23:02 intensity: (8 @0) + (18:55 @1) + (1:34 @2) + (1:14 @3) + (1:11 @4)
ahr:93 max:147

Psychophysical gymnastics is (I think) the correct name. On the beach again, with a feeding frenzy for the blue-footed boobies as a backdrop.
10 AM

multisport adventure 3:46:42 intensity: (1 @0) + (3:38:30 @1) + (7:05 @2) + (1:06 @3) 14.39 km (15:45 / km) +144m 15:00 / km
ahr:85 max:133

Trip to the Wall of Tears and back. Transportation was via mountain bikes, though there was some walking to interesting spots and a smidgen of spelunking in a lava tube. I led the optional extra bit of riding back to the bike shop.

hiking (sand) 21:20 intensity: (17:48 @1) + (2:24 @2) + (1:08 @3) 1.24 km (17:14 / km) +11m 16:31 / km
ahr:106 max:132 shoes: no

From the lunch restaurant back to the hotel on the beach, with Nancy, though this also includes a brisk walk/jog to the laundry place and back to get our clothes (wearing sandals).
4 PM

paddling (kayak ) 47:01 [1] 1.91 km (24:33 / km)
ahr:89 max:112

Around the harbor in a tandem with Nancy, seeing mostly the same stuff we'd seen from the dive boat a couple of days ago.

swimming (snorkeling) 39:55 [1] 0.35 km (1:53:43 / km)
ahr:87 max:87

Kind of a clockwise lap around Concha de Perla, with the Brits and the sisters. Just a mask and snorkel this time -- I probably would have rented fins but there was a bit of confusion and I was okay without. Improved thanks to the practice, this was the most successful session from a technical standpoint. I managed to miss the penguin and the sea lion that others saw, but there was a lot of other interesting stuff.

hiking (pavement) 16:55 [1] 1.07 km (15:46 / km) +3m 15:32 / km
ahr:88 max:102

Walking back to the hotel with the sisters.

hiking (pavement) 17:22 [1] 0.78 km (22:19 / km)
ahr:84 max:96

Walking to the Booby Trap for dinner with everybody, In The Dark. (We also walked back, but I didn't turn on the watch.) I got grilled octopus, which was much better than the disappointing grilled octopus that I got two nights earlier.

Wednesday Jan 24 #

7 AM

exercises (yoga) 26:14 intensity: (4 @0) + (22:03 @1) + (2:06 @2) + (1:46 @3) + (12 @4) + (3 @5)
ahr:95 max:150

More psycho-whatsis hoozis, this time on the beach.
10 AM

hiking (trails) 4:22:55 intensity: (4:18:01 @1) + (4:54 @2) 12.04 km (21:50 / km) +190m 20:14 / km
ahr:92 max:121 shoes: Oboz Sawtooth II

Volcano hike, up to and along the rim of the humongous caldera. This was probably the most weather-dependent activity, and it cooperated perfectly.

Tuesday Jan 23 #

7 AM

exercises (yoga) 27:10 intensity: (25:27 @1) + (1:42 @2) + (1 @3)
ahr:91 max:126

More psycho-whatever gymnastics.

hiking (pavement) 47:43 [1] 2.11 km (22:36 / km)
ahr:81 max:100

From the hotel to the pier. Forgot to stop the watch until we were under way.
11 AM

Note

I've often noted that I had never been to a tropical island paradise. Well, here I am.
1 PM

hiking (pavement) 29:18 [1] 0.57 km (51:46 / km)
ahr:80 max:102

To the dive shop and then to the restaurant for lunch.

hiking (pavement) 3:16 [1] 0.2 km (16:30 / km)
ahr:95 max:101

Back to the hotel.

hiking (pavement) 8:36 intensity: (8:07 @1) + (29 @2) 0.23 km (37:53 / km)
ahr:94 max:119

From the hotel to the bus stop, then down to the pier. If I had realized this was going to mostly be a bus ride, I might not have logged it.
3 PM

swimming 30:00 [3]

Tintoreras islets. I managed to not start my watch somehow for this, so the time is a guess. Nancy had more suitable equipment this time, and so was able to participate. Saw sea turtles below us, and we went through a narrow canyon where they thought we might see sharks, but didn't. A sea lion zipped by underneath us going the other way though, which was cool.
5 PM

hiking (trails) 54:41 [1] 0.95 km (57:45 / km)
ahr:90 max:112

A walk on one of the Tintorera islets to see marine iguanas and stuff.

hiking (pavement) 9:01 [1] 0.23 km (39:43 / km) +7m 34:21 / km
ahr:89 max:100

Back to the hotel via the bus.
8 PM

hiking 55:04 [1] 0.77 km (1:11:25 / km)
ahr:78 max:112

Monday Jan 22 #

9 AM

pedaling (MTB on pavement ) 1:29:48 intensity: (15 @0) + (1:29:10 @1) + (23 @2) 18.81 km (4:47 / km) +25m 4:45 / km
ahr:82 max:116

The downhill run from Santa Rosa to Puerto Ayora. This was mostly coasting, and maybe half the time it was drizzling. I generally stayed at the back of the fairly slow-moving group.

hiking (pavement) 2:38:34 [1] 4.11 km (38:34 / km) +47m 36:28 / km
ahr:80 max:111 shoes: Merrill Agility Peak4

Walking around the Charles Darwin Research Center, or whatever it's called, and eventually to lunch.
3 PM

hiking (pavement) 10:57 [1] 0.6 km (18:22 / km) +2m 18:09 / km
ahr:88 max:102 shoes: Merrill Agility Peak4

Lunch to the hotel.

hiking (pavement) 9:53 intensity: (28 @0) + (9:25 @1) 0.62 km (16:00 / km)
ahr:80 max:104

Parking lot to the beach.
5 PM

paddling (kayak ) 50:50 intensity: (46:50 @1) + (3:52 @2) + (8 @3) 2.56 km (19:52 / km)
ahr:94 max:133

Tandem kayak with Nancy, across the bay in somewhat rough water to see some stuff on the other side, then back.

swimming (salt water) 15:06 [1] 0.22 km (1:07:43 / km)
ahr:105 max:105

So, nice day, white sand beach, very warm water, how could we not go for a swim? The black-tipped sharks swimming around were a bonus.

hiking (pavement) 12:13 intensity: (3:07 @0) + (8:44 @1) + (22 @2) 0.64 km (19:09 / km) +17m 16:52 / km
ahr:87 max:116

And back to the bus.
