rowing 20:00 [2]

A bit worn from the combination of a meeting and travel. Broke a good sweat on the rowing machine.

Friday Feb 27, 2009 #

running 20:00 [2]

Jogged around Orlanda just a bit. I headed east and a bit north from where I'm staying - ran around a little lake/homeless sleeping area; explored a nice residential neighborhood; ran by a tattoo shop; and passed by an expensive-looking prep school...all within just 20 minutes. Either everything was really close or I was flying along at a very fast pace.

Note

Work travel day.

If I were Nadim, I'd go out for a short run from the hotel. But, I'm not. I'm going to read a bit, get some sleep. Might do a short run in the a.m.

rowing 20:00 [2]

A bit of rowing.

I also did a little bit of fieldchecking of the sprint map.

Tuesday Feb 24, 2009 #

running 50:00 intensity: (38:00 @2) + (12:00 @5)

Ran on the river trails. I did 3 x 1 km right at the lower limit of an honest effort, with plenty of easy jogging to recover.

The ankle feels quite stiff and even a little sore right now. Bummer.

Note

About 20 minutes of fieldchecking on the downtown sprint map over my lunch hour.

orienteering 1:20:00 [1]

Picked up controls at Heartland. Nice day to be out. I kept the effort easy and worked on keeping my head up and looking as far ahead as possible in the terrain.

rowing 30:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (5:00 @2) + (5:00 @4)

In the basement. I had the laptop next to the rower and followed the web coverage of the Tour of California. The web coverage was really impressive.

running 15:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up. Cold north wind.

PTOC at HCC. Fun course - lots of controls and lots of variety. Some rough woods, but not too terrible.

I was feeling pretty good and motivated to have a clean run. I ran pretty well - pushed a bit too hard on one leg and lost a little time as I recovered; ran a bit too easy in a couple of spots, too.

Pete was there. But I didn't see him. Gene was there, too. But I didn't see him.

rowing 20:00 [2]

Long day - started with a breakfast Rotary presentation. The part of my job where I talk to groups isn't the most stressful part of my job, but it is stressful. I'm getting better at it,...I think...

Did a bit of rowing - actually worked fairly hard. My ribs feel pretty good when exercising (still hurts to try to sleep, though).

Tuesday Feb 17, 2009 #

running 50:00 [2]

Ran on the river trails. Felt ok. Nice day to be out. The days are getting long enough that I don't need a lamp. Sad.

Monday Feb 16, 2009 #

rowing 20:00 [2]

In the basement...doing a little something to get moving.

My left ankle = stiff + swollen. Ribs are pretty good.

Sunday Feb 15, 2009 #

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up. My legs felt tired but not as bad as I feared. My ankle was quite stiff and I ran with the Active Ankle.

Race at Cleveland Dam.

The setting was amazing - blue skies, mountains in the background, huge trees, bits of old snow here and there. Really nice.

My race was less than amazing. I boomed the second control (looks like I lost a good 2:15). The rest of the race was better, but I was behind in the map reading the whole time and was running cautiously (which was probably because I was a bit tired, my ankle was sore, and it was hard to push knowing that I'd boomed so much, so soon).

After the race, we had to get back home, so we missed the last two events.

Thanks to GVOC for putting on a great weekend of orienteering.

Otervals downtown. 5 x very short forked courses. I ran with Dan, Andrea, and Adrian. At the start they were talking about not running hard, but it felt to me like we were running hard. I wasn't quite race-pace, but I was close.

The downtown terrain was interesting, with lots of uncrossable walls and passages to figure out.

Lost Lagoon mass start race. I took it a bit easy in the first few controls, then gradually picked up the effort (probably not the pace, though...I'll have to take a look at the QuickRoute track).

Finished a long morning of O' with an exercise to work on first controls. We had a packet of little maps. Turn it over, find the triangle and navigate to the first control. I worked on running each first leg as if it were the first leg of a race (as opposed to trying to be the first to the first control). It was an interesting exercise. By the end, my legs were feeling drained.

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging to warm up. My legs felt slow. I'm sure everyone had the same feeling.

False Creek race. Fun to run in an area so full of people. I had a fairly clean race but felt like I wasn't pushing myself very well.

Mass start dog bones course. Fun.

After getting up way to early and putting in a fairly long (but smooth) travel day, I ran the first 15 controls of the UBC course and then wandered a bit to see how some of the area was mapped.

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up.

Acadia race at UBC. Really fun stuff and a good race. It felt like quite a bit of orienteering, lots of legs, lots of decisions, lots of stuff to read.

Patrick ran the best time - 13:17 - that seems like a really fast time. I had 16:33.

Thursday Feb 12, 2009 #

Note

Today was a lazy day. I could have squeezed in a run or row without much trouble. I didn't. Instead, I ate some cake, did some laundry, and packed some bags. I will go to sleep early. I plan to not spend a second of mental energy over the next 4 days thinking about police departments or electric tariffs.

rowing 20:00 [2]

Just enough to break a good sweat before dinner.

I was reading about the KU rowing team and the upcoming open house. I recognize the name of the KU coach. We graduated from KU at the same time, but he's older than me. He went to LHS. I wonder if I knew him or a sibling of his or maybe I'm just imaging I recognize the name.

I jogged around a course on the downtown Lawrence map. Fun.

Warm weather - near 70 - meant the downtown was full of people. Lots of folks at the various sidewalk dining places.

A/P - not especially good, but not so bad either.

Monday Feb 9, 2009 #

Note

I did some fieldchecking on the downtown map after work. I was working on the parking garage at Riverfront. I'm working on a non-ISSOM approach to showing the multiple levels and connections between them. It wouldn't be fair for a big race, but since I don't expect the map will ever get used for a big race, I'll experiment a bit.

Sunday Feb 8, 2009 #

running 1:35:00 intensity: (1:10:00 @2) + (25:00 @3)

I ran on trails at Wyandotte - carrying the map and spending a fair amount of time reading it (focus on looking far ahead and around and seeing how far away I could pick out features).

The run felt good. After another bad sleeping night, I had low expectations.

I saw a group of Trail Nerds out marking the trail for next weekends' race.

Saturday Feb 7, 2009 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

On trails at Wyandotte, carrying the map and looking at it now and then. It felt nice to have a map in my hand.

Ribs felt as good as they've felt since I fell.

Friday Feb 6, 2009 #

rowing 20:00 [1]

Felt good to break a sweat...but otherwise it didn't feel good.

Thursday Feb 5, 2009 #

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on the river trail. Warm and sunny weather brought out lots of people (and three dogs).

A/P - ankle the same as yesterday, ribs a little bit better.

Wednesday Feb 4, 2009 #

running 20:00 [2]

Jogged a bit on the river trail. I didn't fall down!

A/P update - left ankle felt a little stiff but not weak or unstable, a bit sore afterwards...ribs felt uncomfortable and worse afterwards....

Monday Feb 2, 2009 #

Note

Didn't sleep well last night. Uncomfortable at my desk all day. I'll take a day off and hope it helps. I guess the O' on Saturday might not have been the best idea (though it was fun, fun, fun).

Note

I just created a Google site where I plan to put some of my QuickRoute data files. You can download the files and open them in QuickRoute and then play around with the data:

http://sites.google.com/site/okansasquickroutes/

Right now I've posted day 2 from the Georgia A-meet and yesterday's local race.

rowing 40:00 [1]

A little time rowing in the basement. I was able to break a sweat, but couldn't really push without feeling uncomfortable.

Depending on how I feel, I might do another short session later today (maybe watching the Superbowl).
