running 1:05:10 intensity: (10 @1) + (1:05:00 @2)

Drove back to KC in the a.m. We figured we should get home and shovel before a house showing just after noon. Otherwise, it would have made sense to spend a bit more time in Nebraska, maybe do another run at Indian Cave.

Went to Wyandotte and ran around - mostly trails but a bit in the terrain, too. The trails were slippery from a mix of mud and melting snow. I wore trail shoes rather than O' shoes and took it pretty easy to keep from falling. Really nice to be out in the woods today.

PTOC event at Indian Cave State Park in Nebraska.

Sketchy map.

A couple of inches of snow on the ground were fun to run in . Feet got cold after I stopped.

Fun.

running 25:00 [2]

A little jog on the trails and in the forest at Wyandotte. I carried the map and looked at it a bit. I wasn't geocaching, but I did find a geocache out in the woods.

The sleet has begun. The forecast calls for rain, sleet and freezing rain tongiht, followed by 5-8 inches of snow tomorrow. It seems like we might not make the trip up to Indian Cave for tomorrow's O' (one of the first-ever O' meets in Nebraska, I think). We shall see.

running 40:00 [0]

Easy jog on the river trails. My left calf felt tight but not as bad as I feared. Some light rain falling...cold rain, actually. Forecast is for snow tomorrow. Snow!

Land boat.

Note

My foot felt ok today. That's really good, I was worried about it.

I'll take another day (or even two) off. I'm on the agenda for tomorrow's CC meeting and won't be surprised if I don't get out of work until 11+ p.m.

My left foot felt sore and I didn't think running on it was wise. Instead, I decide to ride my MTB at SMP. I brought along a map and read it quite a bit (using my mtb-O' map holder). When I was on the pavement, I read the map on the move. But when I was on the single track trails I didn't dare try. I'm a klutz on a bike and I didn't want to run into a tree or fall down because I was trying to read the map. Instead, I'd stop every now and then and take a look at what was coming up.

I struggled with the trail anytime it got rocky. I'm just not very confident and don't like the feeling of being clipped in when I'm in rocky terrain.

orienteering 35:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (25:00 @4)

5K trail race on the bike trails at Perry. I'm recording it as orienteering because I carried a contours-only map and read it quite a bit. But, the race was actually a trail race.

It was a nice course. The field spread out quickly and I was running on my own from the place where the 5 and 10K courses split (which was after about 1K).

After the run, Gene, Raymond (Yes! Raymond is in town) and I went out for coffee. That was fun, too.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Jogging on the river trail. I took it easy but it didn't feel easy. Strange.

running 25:00 [1]

Easy running with a 15 minute break in the middle to do a bit of fieldchecking around the boathouse.

I found a wallet and bunch of credit cards in the forest. Brought it back to the car, figuring I'd call the owner. When I looked at the cards, they expired in 2005. One of the cards was a KU student ID from 2001. Guess the stuff had been there for a while. I think I'll still see if I can let the owner know, just for the heck of it....or maybe I'm hoping for some sort of reward!

rowing 20:00 [2]

Land boat. Feeling a bit worn out.

Monday Mar 16, 2009 #

Note

About an hour of fieldchecking at Burcham Park (the far north end of the current version of the downtown map). I added the boathouse and the area immediately surrounding it.

Easy jogging with a few hills at Wyandotte.

3 x 3 control courses at Wyandotte. I kept the effort low and focused on high LAM. Fun, especially as my ankle felt pretty good despite a good, hard effort yesterday.

Jogging around to warm up.

Pulling into the park I saw Matt Sumner starting. I knew I'd have to work hard. It is nice to have someone pushing me - keeps me from getting too lazy. The next step would be to inspire me to drop a few pounds.

PTOC race at a new area - Watkins Mill. I'd explored the park a bit with a USGS map so I had a rough idea of what the terrain might be like.

The terrain was not the most comfortable we've got around here. Someone like Swampfox (who is afraid of thorns) wouldn't have made it very far.

Here is the map:

http://okansas.blogspot.com/2009/03/todays-race-at...

Mary didn't come to the meet (instead she ran in the pool). But there were plenty of OKers in attendance, including - Marv, Fritz, Gene, Pete, and.....Steve Hitchcock! Haven't seen Hitch in years.

Stopped at the Kearny McD's after the run. Maybe inspired by racing Matt S. (I think I got him by a couple of minutes), I opted for a salad....of course, I also opted for a milk shake.

In the basement. I worked a bit hard, actually.

PTOC has a meet on a brand new map tomorrow - should be fun.

running 30:00 [2]

Before I went for a jog it was "38F, windy and pouring rain....If I had a rain suit,..." No actually, it just felt like that. Or maybe it was watching the last few minutes of the KU-Baylor game that made it feel like I'd had icy cold water poured over my head.

I went for a jog from City Hall. I carried the basemap for Burcham Park and ran with the GPS. I'm hoping the GPS track will add some detail to the basemap and make it easier to map. Mostly just as experiment as the basemap is quite good anyway.

As I jogged along the river I watched the rowers practicing. Looks like hard work.

running 40:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

Some 70/20s on the river trails. I expected to feel really good. The temp was right at 30 and the trails were empty. Running felt uncomfortable and difficult. Not sure why. When I start to get annoyed with how I feel, I like to remind myself that it beats being unable to run. Then I feel better mentally, if not physically.

On the drive home I listened to a long sports-talk-radio interview with my old boss. It is online at: http://www.whatswright.com/ (Look for the March 10 audio in the little box on the right side of the page).

Some rowing. My stupid ankle was swollen and stiff today. I guess I ran a bit more than my stupid ankle could take.

running 25:00 [2]

Jogging at Wyandotte. Looking at the map quite a bit, but not with any purpose, so this doesn't count as O' practice.

Two O' sessions. I began with a "wave at the control course." I drew some controls on the map that I would wave at from as far away as possible (so a control might be a spur on the other side of the lake). The idea was to keep my head up and look as far ahead as possible. I'd never done this particular session and it was pretty interesting. I'll do it again. Next, I ran a course from an old PTOC meet (I found the map out in the garage). I stopped at each control, planned the route, then ran each leg without looking at the map (might call this "low LAM" training). Once again, the idea was to work on looking as far ahead as possible in the terrain (and to see the structure rather than any details). Fun.

By working on keeping my head up, I didn't spend my time looking at the ground. After I hurt my ankle in GA, I've been running with too much caution in the terrain. I end up looking at where I'm putting my feet instead of looking up.

An O' session at SMP. I broke the session in to three bits: focusing on high LAM; focusing on looking as far ahead as possible in the terrain (pretty easy with the leaves down); and a short segment at a race pace. Fun except that it was warm out there.

rowing 20:00 [2]

A Xeno session while watching some of the first half of the KU-Texas basketball game. I wonder if Xeno watches TV while he trains.

running 35:00 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

Ran on the river trails and included 15 minutes at an honest effort (as 70/20s). Really warm today - must have reached 80. My office (with a wall of south facing windows) was "som en bastu." The warm weather brought out a lot of folks. Two guys were running the wrong direction on the trail with 2 off-leash square-headed dogs.

rowing 20:00 [2]

While Mary was jogging in the swimming pool I was imitating Xeno in the basement (a chubby, old, slow Xeno with sketchy technique).

I felt the need to have a map in my hand. I ran a course on the downtown map after work. It was fun. Actually, it was fun, fun, fun.

Some low-intensity O' practice at Wyandotte. The snow made the footing a bit tricky and the pace a bit slow. There was about 2 inches of snow on the ground. Fun.
