2014 Orienteering Goals:

I’m making a change this year. I won’t have set “goals” as in past years. Instead, I’m trying to have an “area of focus” to work on improving in one area. My focus for 2014 will be on...focus. I had a real problem in 2013 with inconsistency in my races, with some real lapses in focus and attention, leading to huge mistakes. I want to improve my focus during a race, so that I am not put into situations where I have to relocate or catch up. I will still track my progress by looking at some numbers (have to measure it some how) but I’m looking for an improvement, not an absolute number.

OK's annual New Year's event, at Woodridge. 25 degrees and plenty of wind; such perfect conditions for running a registration table. Sometimes I wish our O season was not wintertime :)

After registration with Sandy, I went out on the middle course ( still fighting off a slight cold). Mike and Mook were going to follow my live track. I tried not to think about it too much, but it did enter my mind from time to time.

Focus was decent, after my hands warmed up and I could carry my compass and dip stick normally. Slight mistake on 7 (also didn't see the trail route choice) and 8 (pulled to the wrong rock wall). I should have taken more time before the start to turn off my "meet organizer" brain and turned on my "competitior" brain. But overall, it was a decent day in the woods.

When I got back, I found out that the live tracking did not work (poor cell phone coverage?) Sorry Mook

We had a great turn out, with 27 starts. Ran out of maps, and Mike had to draw the middle course on blank maps, and then over some beginner maps. Mike's video must have worked to spread the word!
