11 AM

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3] 1.81 mi (8:17 / mi)
shoes: Asics GT 1000-6

12 PM

Running 2:06:39 [3] 18.76 mi (6:45 / mi)
ahr:159 max:175 shoes: Asics GT 1000-6

Ran along the West Highland Way from Milngavie out to just before Drymen and back. Lovely day.

Mile Split: 6.37, 6.27, 6.22, 6.34, 6.22, 6.30, 6.08, 6.12, 6.09, 6.15, 7.29, 7.04, 6.20, 6.37, 6.41, 7.26, 6.45, 7.39 + 5.39

This was the hardest run I've done to date. The splits are all over the place on account of the undulating terrain (mile 11 was nearly all up hill). My aim was to go out at what felt like a '6.20' pace and when I was on the flat that was the pace I was going at, if a bit faster.

I felt comfortable for about 15 miles. Miles 15-17 were hard but do-able. I not-quite but just-about blew up during the 18th mile, all the energy drained out of me and I started to get the beginnings of cramps in my leg. The last 10 minutes were more a painful shuffle than a run. At the end of the effort I had to sit down on the grass for about 10 mins before I could even think about going for a warm-down.

I may have pushed it a bit too far in the first 90 mins but I was surprised to drop off the pace so badly in the last couple of miles.

10 AM

Running race 1:15:03 [4] 13.1 mi (5:44 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova Sequence 8

Strathaven Half Marathon. Good conditions for the most part, cool with a mild breeze.

First half marathon in a few years. Started out strong, fast and relaxed. Was in the lead for the first 2 miles with Douglas Roberts. Were passed by John Sharp at 2.5 miles and DR went with him. Mark Sutherland passed me at 3.5 miles and I settled in to 4th where I stayed for the rest of the race. I was about 300m behind DR & MS for most of the race but they got away from me in the last 1.5 miles.

This race was tough. I went with what I hoped was a 'just maintainable' pace so it felt hard from about 2.5 miles. The course was 'undulating' which meant a lot of hills. Miles 6-9 were particularly difficult - head winds and stitches to deal with. My legs were particularly sore for the last 2 miles, felt like I had nothing left. I wasn't being chased and there was no chance of making up a place so there was no need to try for a sprint/effort at the end.

Really happy with the result - a 52s PB over a tough course and good placing as well. I was maybe a bit too fast over the first couple of miles but it was worth going for it at the start.
