Option 3 from the front door.

Probably the best in terms of running condition, almost entirely side walk. But less climb and not very exciting.

Wanted to get a >30 mile bike ride in since I havent been biking much in the last month. Decided to start at a different parking lot for the montour trail. We stopped to look at a map at one point and saw that there was a tunnel comming up, so we pushed on until we got to the tunnel.

Legs were quite tired by the end, but apparently we started with 10 straight miles of uphill... Its nice that even though its an easy trail we get some climb in.

Loop of south park white trail (All dirt). We had a really terrible map to try to follow, but there were lots of criss crossing unmapped trails and the white blazes were not always obvious, so im not sure if we got the whole thing right. At one point we came to a double fence and were quite confused only to find its a game preserve with buffalo! Saw tire tracks on all the trails so doubles as a mtn bike trail.

Elevation didnt feel to bad, but still better than comparable distance run of bird hills :)

Run in the rain on the mountour trail. More slow and steady climb instead of steep climbs. Probably not worth driving to run here very often.

Option 2 out the front door:

Was hoping once i got across the street and into the neighborhood it would be quiet, but the roads were actually rather busy unfortunately. And no shoulder. By another super easy run with pretty sweet elevation.

Option 1 out of the front door: 2 loops of the development. Not a very exciting run, but easy, dont need to worry about traffic, and 250m of elevation!

First exploration of the mountour trail. About a 15 minute drive to parking, but the trail was pretty deserted so it wasnt annoying biking. Mix of crushed gravel and paved, was hoping it was all gravel

Orienteering race 1:28:02 [3] *** 5.0 mi (17:36 / mi)

WPOC debut at blue spruce park.

I'm going to miss the fact that every map was less than a 30 minute drive, had to trek 90 minutes for this one!

Start up procedure pretty much the same as normal. For set up for red and took off. Forgot to start up my watch until after cp 2, and I can't upload tracks until I get internet.

Took off up the wrong trail to 1 but it was easy to fix. Slightly overshot 3, but not too bad, and then drifted too far down hill to 4 before seeing the flag part way back up. Almost ate pavement on the way to 5, tripping right as I left the woods and sprawling on the road in front of a biker. Passed a guy on red here. Took trails most of the way to 6 (on a legit cliff, cool!). Followed the creek up to 7, but t wasn't actually on the creek, luckily I noticed I crossed the very faint trail and realized my mistake before I way overshot it. Trail to 8 and then I started going around the dark green to 9 before I realized it was easily passible pine forest. By the way to 10 I was feeling hills, , cut in from the hunter stand (every little thing was on this map!). Countoured to 11 and it went pretty well, stopped for a sip of water here. Trails to 12 and then I debated the best route to 13 for a while, but decided trails to an obvious intersection and then about 200 m across rocky ground that ended up being very slow going. Booked it down hill to the road to 14, but drifted. Saw a flag but it turned out to be the wrong one so it took me some time to figure out which way to correct, turned into my biggest mistake. Road to 15 and then contoured to 16 but ended up too high and missed it at first. Quick jog back to the finish.

In general the nav was fairly straightforward and went pretty well, it was the hills that were slow going. The map was really great and the course was set to provide some really good route choice despite all the trails. I think I came in second on red by 12 seconds.

Had a nice chat with Mark lattanzi and his wife at the finish.

Council Crest Urban (do it yourself) Score O (90 min)

I had Sydney plan me a route to hit all of them and try to put a few interesting route choices in. This time I walked from hotel to start (1.3 mi uphill) in part to save some legs and in part to burn off the double brie burger I ate for lunch without puking.

This course was in probably one of the ritzyest neighborhoods in portland, some really amazing houses and views out to Mt Adams and Mt Hood. Undulating hills and sneaky staircases and trails that connect parallel roads, some of which are well hidden.

Started off pretty rough as I bobbled the first CP and then the second CPs answer did not have the correct choice available, making me triple check my location. I made my worst mistake 3 controls later at 11. After trecking up the stairs to count the landings, i decended and took of down the road. Lulckily i checked my compass or I would have ketp going. Turns out I needed to be at hte top of the stairs and going the opposite way, so had tro trek back up. After that it got better, aside for a few that I couldnt find the plaque/sign/bench I was supposed to answer a question about.

I took it easy (re: burger + tired legs from yesterday), but kept up a steady pace. Its hard to juggle a map folded into a sandwhich baggy, A pen + MC sheet, my phone in case i get lost or hurt, and a compass, so answer the questions often took a few seconds longer than punching a flag would. Even without that the nav was trickier than it might appear, because with the hills you cant see more than a block at a time so you need to be very diligent about keeping track of your position.

Once I started getting towards the south of the map it was obvious that I wasnt going to clear it. I took a breif off-the -clock break in Cascade Park to enjoy the view and replan a little better than I had on the fly.

In the end I hit 41/50 CP for 45/58 points in 1:28. My legs are quite sore, but my knees held up which is what I was most worried about.

Permanent course at Hoyt Arboretum by CROC. Instead of control markers it had MC questions to answer at each CP. Not my favorite, but great that they make it work instead of not having it at all, so I'll take it!

Course notes said to stay on trails, so it had an urban sprint feel. I started getting pretty winded around control 6, and bobbled 7 and 13. It was hard to read all the trails at speed, and the hills were just killing me. Prologue to pittsburgh!

Really fun course and the park was just beautiful. Only saw a handful of people too.

A slow trot back. I was afraid my phone was going to die so i took the most straightforward path that I thought I could remember the whole way. Also tried to take it slow to minimize impact on the downhills since i havent been road running much.

Morning hike to Hand lake. Mostly looking for something to warm us up before heading out. It was still cloudy and smokey so that precluded anything with great views, so we did this from our campsite. It did pass through much variety of terrain - forest, meadow, beach, so that was kind of cool, but nothing overly exciting.

Hiking 1:50:00 [3] 4.78 mi (23:01 / mi) +345m 18:48 / mi

Headed up into the cascade mountains about an hour and half from Eugene. We found a campsite at a very busy Scott Lake campground, set up camp and then headed to the Dee Wright observatory. Here you would normally be able to see Mt. Washington, Mt Jeffrson, and the three sisters. Unfortunately, wild fires in the area have caused the whole mountain range to be covered in smoke, so it is very hazy. it looks very much like haze from humidity, but theres no chance of the sun burning it off.

After a stop there we drove a little ways to the trailhead to Little Belknap, which is adjacent to Belknap crater, which is a dormant volcano that last erupted 1000 years ago. The trail started on a forested island, but after about half a mile we were walking on a lava flow the rest of the way. While this sounds really cool, what it really means is you are hiking on loose sharp gravel that is just begging you to trip and scratch your arms or face, or twist an ankle, or both. Luckily we all emerged unscathed. It was kind of tough to hike on.

We could see our goal from the start but it got closer pretty quickly. The last little bit was a bit of a scramble but not too bad. It was quite windy on top, but still pretty warm. We were able to barely see Mt. washington through the haze, so visibility of about 3 miles. Could also catch glimpses of the top of the North Sister every now and then. As we started the decent the wind must have changed directions because it got much hazier to the point where the sunlight was just an orange glow, very eerie. Also spotted what looked like a newly sparked forest fire on the side of Mt washington.

The entirety of the hike was a portion of the PCT, which was pretty cool.

Hike from our campsite to Benson Lake at Twilight.

We had hoped to watch teh sunset from the ridge along Benson Lake, and then stay to watch the Persan Meteor Shower. It was pretty clear when we left hte campsite, but by the time we got to the lake it was both cloudy and smokey, so that was the end of that. Pumped water and then headed back in the dark.

Its funny how much i get freaked out night hiking on a trail, when i dont have navigation to keep my mind occupied.

Spencer Butte in Eugene Oregon with Sam

The hike started off through a dense forest with towering Douglas Firs and lots of ferns, the kind of forest I would picture dinosaurs in. After about 3/4 of the climb it opened up in to sharp rock and sand for the summit. The view was hazy but still quite a beautiful look at the city of Eugene and surrounding mountains.

Permanent course at Rockwoods Range outside of St. Louis, MO with a friend from high school. It was uncharacteristically cool in MO (70's) so it was actually quite beautiful out. Took it at a walk and gave some navigation pointers as we went along. The circles were all placed with the control perfectly centered, but there were a few on questionable features. Map had some inconsistencies in map with regards to rocks, and some the trails just didnt exist anymore, but overall I was quite impressed with the map and course. We only did about half, so I left the maps for him to do some more exploring.

Spider webs everywhere, and when we got home I discovered I had been "seed-tick bombed". I had tiny ticks all over my legs and some on my arms. I stopped counting after pulling off 50 from one ankle - im guessing hte total was close to 200. From what ive read these ticks are too small to carry diseases, so heres to hoping. Pretty gross, i had the creepy crawlies the rest of the day.
