Orienteering - Forest race (JK Relay Beaudesert) 39:38 [5] 5.5 km (7:12 / km) +189m 6:09 / km
ahr:150 max:172 shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

Pretty good run tbh, other than falling in the swamp (see later).

Grim day; cold, raining, some snow but mainly mud on the ground. Cagoules enforced. Wore a hat, although mainly because forgot to take it off.actually really bad for o since it restricts peripheral vision too much.

Plan was to ignore everyone, based on experience of the British relays where I followed everyone, messed up #1 and didn't see anyone again for the entire run. Learned that lesson well, was pretty smooth and taking my own lines to everything, would lose a pack for a bit and then we'd come back together for a common control. A bit lucky on some of the straight-line legs where helped by the volume of people.

Missed 101 (dodgy bearing? Or just following the reentrant up rather than using the compass) and so fell back and was alone, then tried to speed up on 90 and was slightly too far right on a parallel wet ditch/marsh rather than the correct one.this was OOB possibly because it was waist deep.luckily only one leg went in and I was able to instinctively grab onto a tree and haul myself about before the other one met the same fate.didn't really know where I was as survival mode had kicked in, luckily there were plenty of people going to the accrual control which was only 20m or so away.

Then pretty clean from that point and pleased with how well I ignored everyone again. So despite losing a few mins, fairly happy with the performance.

I think my most consistent JK overall; hopefully another year of fell running will improve my fitness even more and make me more competitive at elite level (I have no illusions I'm ever going to win anything, but it would be nice to go into M35 with a bit more of a chance!).
