Road Race race 31:54 [5] 4.3 km (7:25 / km) +145m 6:21 / km

Race the Castles Stirling, Men's Elite (4.3 km, 145 m) in 31:54. Very early start involving a drive in the dark and thick mist saw me on the start line on the castle esplanade at 8:33 am. Two (relatively) huge blunders in the castle: down a dead end then on the wrong level to number 3 (-2:45) and then totally confused when at the wrong level for number (-3:10, mostly just standing still completely unable to work out which everything fitted but there was no control - because it was 3 m above my head!). Ran the next few controls with Dave R and overtaken at the end by Thomas, but otherwise pretty smooth through the much easier terrain outside the castle. Last when I finished (again!) and fairly close to the bottom on the final standings. Despite 20% of my time being due to errors I enjoyed it more than yesterday - and more than I would have enjoyed a full length course. Less is more when it comes to urban races, I think.

Road Run 10:00 [2]

Jogged to the start - no tapes so the map was essential!

Urban Orienteering race 29:40 [5] 4.4 km (6:45 / km) +140m 5:49 / km

Race the Castles Edinburgh Men's Elite (4.4 km, 140 m) in 29:40. Early start just behind James A and Dave R. Hesitant on the tricky early section section. Lost 30 s going "over" rather than "round" the castle on 7-8 and felt pretty knackered for the rest of the course. Didn't see the direct route 17-18 and lost 2:00 backtracking in large "S". Near the bottom of the results and even without the 2:40 of errors I wouldn't have been much higher up the list. Dave R 22:15, Thomas 22:56, Graeme A 23:53, James A 28:05, Alex K mp. Let's do it all again in Stirling at crack of dawn tomorrow!

Road Run 10:00 [3]

Brisker than planned jog to the start and warm up.
