Wednesday Jan 31 #

6 PM

Orienteering race 14:22 [4] 2.38 km (6:02 / km) +79m 5:11 / km
ahr:141 max:156 shoes: Innov X-talon Yellow

HB Summer Sprint - Keirunga
Another MP!! Along with plenty of others. Another case where there was one obvious control and one hidden control, 14m apart. Plus the control description actually fitted the wrong control better than it did the right control. Thought I'd checked the code as it seemed weird, but obviously not.
Anyhow, quite a fun course, but hard work at times - legs need a rest. Clean apart from the MP, though one suboptimal route and lost a second or two through the finish not being where it was marked on the map.

Running 21:29 [3] 3.31 km (6:29 / km) +150m 5:17 / km
ahr:133 max:145 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 3

Ran home. Fairly tired. Used newly re-opened track through Tainui.

Tuesday Jan 30 #

Running 54:55 [3] 9.26 km (5:56 / km) +317m 5:04 / km
ahr:132 max:153 shoes: Nike Pegasus 39

Up the valley to main Te Mata car park, down Te Mata Peak Rd, Tanner & Tainui reserves
Relatively gentle - just wanted to get out and do a normal run after so many races. Legs a bit tired.

Monday Jan 29 #

Orienteering race 12:45 [4] 2.41 km (5:17 / km) +59m 4:43 / km
ahr:151 max:163 shoes: Innov X-talon Yellow

Sprint Relay - M/W50 - Puketeiti Gardens
2nd leg in a team with Susan and the Robertsons.
One slight time loss where I'd forgotten that I needed to be below a bridge rather than on top, but not manya few seconds lost. Otherwise just a couple of very minor hesitations and running pretty well. Overtook the Australian team and was a few seconds quicker than Bruce (running 3rd), though there was a bit of gaffling.

Sunday Jan 28 #

9 AM

Orienteering race 16:25 [4] 2.47 km (6:39 / km) +97m 5:33 / km
ahr:146 max:159 shoes: Innov X-talon Yellow

LMS 3 - Pukekura Park
Fairly solid. One minor dodgy route choice (15-16), struggled to get down the slope 6-7 (as did others), fell over quite spectacularly 11-12 (but no serious damage), but running reasonably.

4 PM

Orienteering race 13:09 [4] 2.34 km (5:37 / km) +56m 5:01 / km
ahr:143 max:163 shoes: Innov X-talon Yellow

LMS 4 - WITT / Graveyard
Whoops. Another mp. This time the classic missing out the middle control of 3 in a straight line (14-15-16). Must have run within 5m of 15, and then got a bit confused after taking longer than expected to get close to 16.
Going well until the map flip, then several small time losses - just not quite in control. A bit frustrating, but still a very enjoyable course.
Fortunately escaped the really heavy rain - had thought map reading was going to be a real issue, but wearing a cap seems to have worked.

10 AM

Orienteering race 14:21 [4] 2.68 km (5:21 / km) +51m 4:53 / km
ahr:141 max:165 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 3

LMS1 - Spotswood Schools. M50.
Mispunched! Easy mistake to make - 2 controls on fences on the side of a building about 15m apart and I punched the wrong one. Not helped by not having control descriptions as I'd left the holder at home.
Otherwise fairly smooth though not running at top speed. Not surprised to be a minute behind Bruce.

3 PM

Orienteering race 14:54 [4] 2.53 km (5:53 / km) +42m 5:26 / km
ahr:140 max:159 shoes: Innov X-talon Yellow

LMS2 - Devon Intermediate etc - M50
Very complicated. 30 controls in 2.4Km.
Generally reasonable. Small time loss on the way to 1 when I didn't see a gap between buildings. A couple of suboptimal route choices. Time losses also from avoiding collisions and one actual collision. Main problem though was poor choice of footwear. O-shoes great on the wet grass but there was too much on paved areas and had to go very slowly and carefully (had thought we might have controls in the steep bush).
Still feeling like I'm not running in top gear - not enough orienteering recently.

Friday Jan 26 #

Orienteering 13:15 [3] 2.29 km (5:47 / km) +34m 5:23 / km
ahr:131 max:145 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 4

Warm up sprint for the Lonely Mountain Sprints. Just jogging and trying to be smooth, but felt pretty awful after a frustrating 6 hour drive that included more lunch than was sensible.

Wednesday Jan 24 #

Orienteering race 11:51 [4] 2.51 km (4:43 / km)
ahr:145 max:162 shoes: Nike Pegasus 39

Sprint - NBHS
Still fairly stiff and sore but it didn't affect me as much as I thought it might. Still a bit below par physically though. Surprisingly fluent given that this was the first orienteering for quite a while, though it wasn't exactly too difficult.

Tuesday Jan 23 #

Running 54:11 [3] 8.24 km (6:35 / km) +381m 5:20 / km
ahr:132 max:151 shoes: Nike Pegasus 39

Te Mata. Green N. to main car park, Yellow CW, green S.
Was going to go to cricket practice but still a bit too sore so did this instead. OK running uphill (though hard work in oppressive conditions), but couldn't stride out at all on the flat or downhill. Better than yesterday though.

Monday Jan 22 #

Running 40:05 [3] 6.47 km (6:12 / km) +208m 5:20 / km
ahr:125 max:146 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 3

Down the valley - Tanner - back up through Tainui
Very gentle as, as expected, suffering DOMS after Saturday's cricket. Didn't feel too bad underneath all the soreness and stiffness. Nice to be running in the rain, though still not that cool.

Sunday Jan 21 #

Note

Golf at Bridge Pa. 96 (31 points). A coupe of bad holes, but the rest reasonable but unspectacular.

Saturday Jan 20 #

Cricket 3:00:00 [1]

2xT20, both against Cornwall teams. In the first, batted at 3 and stayed in for a considerable patr of the innings for 33 off 43 (mainly trying to get singles to get the hitters in strike). Then bowled 4-1-16-4, but we still lost. Hurt a finger taking a catch in the second and didn't bowl. Batted at 10 and was 2 not out when the #11 was out following a spectacular collapse from 45-0 to 71 all out.

A very tough day. 32 degrees and humid. Drank 4 litres of water in total.

Friday Jan 19 #

Running 58:32 [3] 8.57 km (6:50 / km) +459m 5:23 / km
ahr:137 max:159 shoes: Nike Pegasus 39

Te Mata. Green N, Blue N. (mostly), Blue S, Yellow S.
Was going to come down Red, but decided it was likely to be a bit cooler on the ridge so did blue instead! Hard work in the heat.

Thursday Jan 18 #

Cycling 1:10:57 [3] 30.7 km (2:19 / km) +317m 2:12 / km
ahr:137 max:156

The Mutiny Rd loop ACW
In pretty good shape - a reasonable pace despite the heat, though getting a bit cooked on the final climb. Easterly wind made for a quick first half, but not so much speed coming back along Middle Rd.

Wednesday Jan 17 #

Cricket 50:00 [1]

Nets. Just myself and Jack (apparently the session had been called off, but we didn't know). A more useful session than some!

Tuesday Jan 16 #

Running 58:17 [3] 8.7 km (6:42 / km) +452m 5:19 / km
ahr:133 max:161 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 3

Te Mata. Purple, Blue S, Yellow N, Green S.
Thought I needed to try running 2 days in a row. Felt a bit better than expected.

Monday Jan 15 #

Running 1:21:30 [3] 13.4 km (6:05 / km) +493m 5:08 / km
ahr:132 max:154 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 3

Loop of Tainui then Te Mata Peak Rd, up Red N, down Yellow S. to redwoods, then blue / purple.
Raining the whole way, lightly to start with and gradually getting heavier, which felt great after the past few days. Still fairly warm though. Felt fairly tired and stiff for quite a while but improved and feeling pretty good by the end.

Sunday Jan 14 #

Note

Golf at Bridge Pa. 86 (41 points). Much more consistent than usual. Makes a difference when there are only a couple of wild tee shots!
Too hot to consider running or biking.

Saturday Jan 13 #

Cricket 1:30:00 [3]

2xT20 matches. Batting down the order, 1 & 9, both times caught trying to hit out. 1 over, 1 catch.

Friday Jan 12 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3] 23.64 km (2:32 / km) +296m 2:23 / km
ahr:124 max:160

Crosses Road loop with Endsleigh and Kopanga. Combined with going to the dentist.
Kept it fairly short as a very hot day again. Didn't feel too bad apart from the final climb.

Thursday Jan 11 #

Running 1:00:08 [3] 8.0 km (7:31 / km) +400m 6:01 / km
shoes: Nike Pegasus 39

Te Mata. Red to main car park, MTB then Red N up. Spur track, yellow S. to redwoods, then blue / purple.
Very hot and legs still tired from Monday so a very gentle pace.
Garmin currently out of action.

Wednesday Jan 10 #

Note

Golf at Bridge Pa. 92 (35 points). Fairly random as ever. More use of fairways would help a lot. Solid around the greens, and a sand free round.

Cricket 1:10:00 [1]

Easing back into it. Not many people, so plenty of bowling.

Monday Jan 8 #

Running 2:34:27 [3] 19.18 km (8:03 / km) +1043m 6:20 / km
ahr:136 max:160 shoes: Nike Pegasus 39

From Hanmer, up Jollies Pass Rd then the track along the ridge to Mt Isobel. Back down the Mt Isobel track then Clarence Valley Rd back into Hanmer.
A fairly brutal route at the best of times but the temperature must have been close to 30 at the start in Hanmer, making it a real test. Had to be very conservative, but kept going all the way to Jollies Pass. Slow from there to the summit - a lot of walking. Heels got very sore underneath (blistery?) towards the bottom of the descent so took the simple route back. Had also got through the full 2 litres of water by then.
Update : turns out Hanmer was the hottest place in the country today at 33 degrees. Not a surprise.

Sunday Jan 7 #

MTB 1:08:00 [3] 14.5 km (4:41 / km) +180m 4:25 / km

In Hanmer. Random route around various MTB trails. Lots of very slow twisty stuff which was good fun, but the state of the bike was once again rather frustrating. Legs fairly tired.
Suspect Garmin has underestimated the distance - lots of very small scale twists that just don't show up on the track.

Saturday Jan 6 #

Running 1:54:26 [3] 16.31 km (7:01 / km) +719m 5:45 / km
ahr:129 max:149 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 4

Dropped off at a car park at the bottom of the Port Hills. Up to the top, along the ridge to Mt Pleasant then down to Redcliffs with a bit of a loop past a cave.
Harder work than expected. Lots of long grass made the Crater Rim Track quite awkward at times, and I wasn't feeling on top form anyway. Fairly tired afterwards.

Friday Jan 5 #

Note

Most of the day driving to Christchurch with a short walk around Tekapo, then a couple of hours on a golf simulator with Oli playing Pebble Beach. A lot of fun.

Thursday Jan 4 #

MTB 2:37:40 [3] 48.68 km (3:14 / km) +594m 3:03 / km
ahr:113 max:142

From Bannockburn bridge along Lake Dunstan trail then on to Alexandra. Last bit back to the motel with Susan and Larissa.
Great route, as expected. Though have to go a bit slowly at times with the possibility of people coming the other way (it was quite popular), particularly with my very poor brakes. Feeling tired towards the end of the lake, but improved with the more interesting biking down the river.

Wednesday Jan 3 #

MTB 1:15:08 [3] 23.08 km (3:15 / km) +299m 3:03 / km
ahr:113 max:138

From a motel in Alexandra along the track down the Roxburgh Gorge to the end and back.
Meant to be a bit easier today and ultimately it was. But the first half was a bit of a struggle - was working harder than I wanted to. Hadn't realised how much difference the wind made - going back up the river was so much easier and faster.

Tuesday Jan 2 #

Running 1:27:46 [3] 15.94 km (5:30 / km) +159m 5:15 / km
ahr:135 max:155 shoes: Nike Pegasus Trail 4

A loop of end of the Sandy Point peninsula, including a short cross country section in wooded dunes with map. Some really nice bits of track, some more boring bits.
Not too bad physically. Went at a reasonable tempo, particularly the second half, as didn't want to be in the unexpected (and un-forecast) sun for too long.

Monday Jan 1 #

MTB 1:58:00 [3] 33.0 km (3:35 / km) +200m 3:28 / km
ahr:106 max:138

From Chris and Ian's to a sand dune MTB park with Chris, Jean and Al. Lots of different trails then back.
Great fun, but could really do with a bike with some suspension and brakes. Legs fairly tired afterwards from the constant changes in effort.
Stats are estimates thanks to incompetent watch operator.
