Orienteering 1:12:29 [3] 7.0 km (10:21 / km)
(injured) shoes: VJ Falcon

BAOC event, Big Basin. Red course 5.3Km 520m

Amazing forest, just a pity it was so steep! Opted not to do the longest course as had a flight to catch, and the registration process took a lot longer than expected. Good decision as the physicality made it very slow. Some of the slopes were very difficult to get along or up because of the steepness and the crumbly soil, plus fallen trees presented significant obstacles.

Plenty of mistakes. Struggled to get into the map, and it wasn't always correct. Features were there but not necessarily correct innrelation to each other.

Lost 2 mins at 1 because the map was not correct; hit the spur very close to the control, but had aimed off to be safe. Scrappy on 2 and 3 - mainly just hesitant. Small misses at 5 (15 sec) and 6 (45 sec). Lost 2 mins at 11 hunting very close to the control in the fallen trees - not correct wrt the spur down the hill from 10. Lost 30 sec at 17.

Physically felt very average and didn't put too much effort in - too busy enjoying the location. Heel got a bit sore. Also struggling to read the map.

Running 1:10:59 [3] 13.0 km (5:28 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Air Pegasus 30 Blue

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. A completely random loop round nearly all of the park with some extra exploring.

Mostly fairly gentle, particularly at the start as a bit hungover. But sped up later. Surprised how tired I felt afterwards. Heel slightly sore towards the end, but generally seeming a lot improved - barely modifying my running style at all. Very enjoyable.

Running 40:59 [3] 8.0 km (5:07 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Air Pegasus 30 Blue

Wildwood Park, Thousand Oaks. Shortened version of the loop I've done before along the ridge and back through a bit of suburbia.

Not sure what 92F is in real numbers, but I'm sure it begins with a 3, and it felt like a sauna! Would have run a bit further but didn't want to overdo it in that heat.

Heel fealing by far the best it's been since the injury. Hardly any pain, though still going a bit gingerly downhill.

Cycling 30:00 [3] 17.5 km (1:43 / km)
(injured)

In the gym in a hotel just next to Vancouver airport, about 4 hours after landing. Reasonable workout using the random setting at a medium-hard intensity level.

Feeling OK, but sweating buckets!

NB Two Tuesdays this week. The first was a rest day.
7 PM

Running 18:00 [3] 3.0 km (6:00 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Air Pegasus 30 Blue

Followed the biking with a spell on the treadmill while bizarrely watching a Kerry v Tyrone All-Ireland Gaelic football semi-final.

Very easy to start with while the legs recovered from the biking, but sped up and was feeling good. Ran it all on a 4% incline and as a result had no problem at all with the heel. Heel is still a bit sore in general, but think there are now signs of improvement.

Monday Aug 24, 2015 #

Cycling 1:04:31 [3] 25.73 km (2:30 / km)
(injured)

Whitemans Valley loop ACW. Wet, and with a variable Northerly.

Didn't push too hard and felt pretty good so surprised to be quite so slow. But conditions weren't great. As expected, heel no problem at all.

Saturday Aug 22, 2015 #

Running 42:17 [3] 8.0 km (5:17 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Pegasus 31

Loop of Whitireia Park from the park entrance while Oli was playing hockey at Elsdon.

A real struggle to get going. Improved, but never felt spectacular. Heel was sore most of the way - worse than yesterday.

Friday Aug 21, 2015 #

Running 47:13 [3] 9.0 km (5:15 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Air Pegasus 30 Blue

Dry Creek Loop CW

Heel is still intermittently quite sore. Fine going uphill but was definitely a bit slow going downhill where it was hurting (surface dependent).

Felt good up the first hill, but thereafter rather sluggish. Jetlag plus knee plus returning to steeper and longer hills.

Tuesday Aug 18, 2015 #

Running 44:10 [3] 9.0 km (4:54 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Pegasus 31

Pretty much the same as last week. HB - Forge Dam - Pitch & Putt, but HB at beginning and end to maximise off-road.

Heel variable. Definitely running on my toes more and mostly OK on the flat or uphill. But sore downhill. Surface makes quite a difference.

Feeling good otherwise. On a plane for many hours tonight though.

Sunday Aug 16, 2015 #

Running 54:30 [3] 11.0 km (4:57 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Pegasus 31

Full loop of Ecclesall Woods, CW, plus Limb Valley going up the small track next to the fields and down the main track.

Heel still sore but not quite as bad as other times recently, so went a bit further. Probably more sore afterwards though. Feeling good otherwise, and I'm going to miss runs as nice as this.

Note
(injured)

Golf at Beauchief with Charlie, Arun and Nick.

90. Poorish start yet again, but improved and played OK on the second half (43). Worst putting for a while, but greens rather variable. Beautiful day to be playing.

Friday Aug 14, 2015 #

Running 32:55 [3] 7.0 km (4:42 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Pegasus 31

From the office. The reverse of Tuesday's route but didn't go all the way up to Forge Dam.

Heel continues to be sore, and calf continues to be sore to compensate. Feeling very fit otherwise.

Wednesday Aug 12, 2015 #

Running 49:30 [3] 7.0 km (7:04 / km)
(injured) shoes: VJ Falcon

From NW corner of Lady Cannings - Ox stones - Burbage Valley (near top of plantation) - Burbage bridge - straight to top of hill above reservoirs - Rudd Hill.

Had intended to go the other way but Dark Peak came through as I was setting off, so ran with them (the slower group) to Burbage bridge.

Heel a lot less sore when running over the really rough terrain, so better than yesterday, but sore afterwards.

Stopped for a minute or two on Rud Hill, to remind myself why I enjoy running. Beautiful clear still evening with huge views.

Tuesday Aug 11, 2015 #

Running 45:13 [3] 9.0 km (5:01 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Pegasus 31

From the office - HB - Forge Dam - back via Pitch and Putt.

Heel still sore - compensating all the time. Right calf started hurting about half way, presumably because of the way I was running. OK afterwards though.

Sunday Aug 9, 2015 #

Running 50:02 [3] 9.0 km (5:34 / km)
(injured) shoes: Nike Pegasus 31

Stopped at the car park between Greno and Wharncliffe on the way back from Scotland. Loop round Most of Greno and a bit of Wharncliffe.

Nice run, but heel sore all the way. Guess the Ibuprofen was working while orienteering. Or maybe the adrenalin of racing, helped by the softer ground? Anyhow, not much fun, particularly downhill. Also had gut problems leading to an unscheduled pause in some thicker vegetation. Legs understandably a bit heavy.

Orienteering race 1:01:33 [4] 9.0 km (6:50 / km)
(injured) shoes: VJ Falcon

Day 6 - Affric North - 7.42Km 340m

Wonderful area, if physical. Very enjoyable, though not actually too difficult.

Finally had a good run. Apart from route choices, only lost a few seconds at 14 after having to change route to avoid fallen trees.

However lost about 1.5 mins 3-4 on an unlucky route that no-one else had chosen. Very rough and tussocky. Probably also 15 sec 19-20 where I went for the wrong crossing point.

Physically pretty good. Started steadily, deliberately not racing too hard until the last few controls and concentrating on running smoothly instead. Probably should have run harder though, as wasn't particularly tired afterwards. Heel sore beforehand, but pretty much OK during the race.

Note

Well, that's that for serious orienteering for several months. First decent break for ages. Just going to be ticking over for a while.

Largely very enjoyable 6-days, though Day 2 was horrible, and missing Day 5 was a good decision. Very competitive M45 class. 7th wasn't too bad in the circumstances, but would have liked to have been able to race properly without the heel injury.

Note
(injured)

Golf at Covesea with Marky and Jubby. Played better than last time, but with worse results - 50. Great fun, but harshly punishing at times.

Heel still quite sore but a bit better than yesterday. Decided not to risk it on a potentially much rougher area, a decision helped by the probability of parking problems.

Orienteering race 51:01 [4] 9.0 km (5:40 / km)
(injured) shoes: VJ Falcon

Day 4 - Darnaway West - 7.715 Km 230m

Another really enjoyable event.

Heel was very sore in the morning, quite sore before the start, but pretty much OK during the race. Felt it at times, but it wasn't the distraction it was yesterday.

However, a frustrating run, as one 2.15 min mistake at 8 cost a possible win. Also, unbelievably, lost time at 12, the easiest control on the course. Just ran past without seeing it. 20 sec? Otherwise very good, spiking most other controls.

Physically, good start, but struggles after the mistake and was slow until speeding up a bit through the last few controls.

Orienteering race 32:26 [4] 6.0 km (5:24 / km)
(injured) shoes: VJ Falcon

Day 3 - Darnaway East - 4.5Km 135m

From the ridiculous back to the sublime. Very enjoyable and reasonably tricky course.

Heel a bit sore all the way. Fortunately very soft underfoot so not too painful, but stepped on a rock between 7 and 8 and was in agony for a few minutes. Difficult to tell just how much it afected me but noticeable that my good splits were further down than the past 2 days. Obviously affected me mentally - was not concentrating properly on navigation in the first half of the course and lost time on nearly every leg (1,2,3,4,6,8,9). Worst was 1.5 mins at 1, where the map was dubious. Probably lost about 4 mins in total, mostly through just not concentrating.

Golf at Forres with Charlie, Dave and Arun.
101. Not too bad after a poor start. Nice course, but windy.

Heel still sore. Hurts with every footstep, but might be able to run through the pain.

Orienteering 55:10 [3] 7.0 km (7:53 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

Day 2 - Strathfarrar 6.2Km 260m

Horrible day all round. Huge queue into car park so nearly everyone using punching starts which meant a 20 min queue at the start and no chance to warm up. Then the area was ridiculous. Should never have been used in Summer - you just had to pick your elephant track and hope it was the right one. Would not have run if I'd had an early start. Also, a control in the wrong place, which I don't remember ever happening at the 6-days before.

Poor run. Not in the right state of mind at the start. Lost 30 sec to 1 as confused innthe middle of the leg. Lost 1 min at 3 which was on the wrong crag. Lost contact to 4 (30 sec). Missed elephant track to 7. Route OK, but probably cost 45 sec. -10 sec on 8 (stopped just before it) -30 sec on 9.

Then, on the way to 13 fell over really badly. Injured heel - don't know quite how. Cost 1-2 mins over that leg and the next couple.

Physically pretty awful. Really struggling to run and absolutely knackered at the end. Not fun.

Heel very sore in the evening. Not sure I'll be able to run again this week.

Orienteering race 58:03 [4] 10.0 km (5:48 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon

6-days Day 1 - Achagour 8.02Km 160m

Fun course, good area, though fairly physical.

Didn't push too hard as the earliest start of the week and unlikely to count.

Orienteering rusty - lost 3-4 mins.

Note

Golf at Covesea with Charlie and Dave.
Awful start, but got much better. 49. Great fun.
