12 PM

Running 1:00:05 [4] 12.3 km (4:53 / km) +71m 4:45 / km
shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

Felt pretty wrecked. Set off up the cycle path as usual.

Slowly got into it. Lethargic. Tired. sunday's Midlands & tuesday's climb & 5km road race have knocked me down a bit.

did kms 6 & 8 hard-ish - 3:56 & 3:59, I think, the latter hurt as was into a bit of a wind.

cruised a 4:18 mostly downhill then a 4:45 3x hills, before basically calling it a day at 11km.

Need a rest. And a new pair of general training shoes. https://www.strava.com/activities/920620313

(rest day)

Pretty beaten up.

Prep for small gig tonight at Fleece - on at 8:15 if anyone fancies it? £5, we're only doing 7 songs, for 30 minutes.

Note

Sport climbing, Tirpentwys, south wales.

With Clio.

Hard sport - 5c, 6a, 6b+ (hard but we both made it!), then onto Supertramp our 7a "project".

Both failed. Rained off in the end. I twice got high points - gave it 100%, eyeballs out, screaming. Poor Clio never had a decent chance - my 2nd attempt, I was lowered off in torrential rain. Bastard.

Hot footed it back to Bristol. And prepped for an ill-advised attempt to run 5km on the road. in a race. Am I mad?

My shoulder was quite painful after, i will leave climbing til next week now. oh dear.....................
7 PM

Running race (road race) 18:44 [5] 5.0 km (3:45 / km) +25m 3:39 / km
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 6

Aztec Fast 5km, 1st running race since I did 18:16 here in September - 6 months , OMG!

Decided to pace it sensibly, seeing as I'm unfit, lumbering, & slow. (and - in all seriousness - lacking any sort of proper training for this sort of burn-up).

Garmin refused to boot, so I had no idea of pace at start, so drifted along being passed by a zillion children & women. Whatever.

3:39 at 1km - oh! Right...... (leaders sub-3 minutes).

just kept the pace chugging along, sub 3:50s the whole way. Very pleased about this. It wasn't easy though.

At the hill at 3.5km, was able to kick in & drop a fair few veterans & women. Just about maintained this to the end. for 2nd Vet50 (bottle of wine!) .

Really good day, I'm a happy Phil.

(rest day)

Took Tim Tett rock climbing at Sea Walls, avon gorge,

Good value. did a Diff, a severe, then led a fairly tough VS 4b (Jumping carrots) which felt bold, on a single rope (= rope drag). Tim suffered on this one! Had to lower him down a few times so he could try again! ha ha!

Eventually he rolled up it. humiliation has been shared on FriendFace.

Orienteering race 1:10:16 [5] 11.8 km (5:57 / km) +184m 5:31 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Midland Champs
Not my finest 70mins of orienteering
5th.
On a better note, it was such a nice day!
On a worse note, it was difficult getting home.

- completely off the pace: my previous 4 weekends' "wins" are clearly highly misleading. I'm not even a contender here. Missing the whole winter's training has had an effect & this is it. JK - no chance.....

Running 33:00 [3] 6.75 km (4:53 / km) +65m 4:40 / km
shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Nice easy spin up valley and down past Stockwood, mostly verges & tarmac; no issues; even found nice new path to run down. LH thigh still a "worry" but probably nothing much. no hamstring pain.....

Drove to Winchester later for an overnighter - sister over from Switzerland staying with family frineds.

Note

Climbing: Bloc bouldering with Clio, who is now burning me off proper.

She flashed a 6a (V3) and I failed twice .

I did a few good reds (hard 5c).

Shoulder wasn't good enough. Never mind. Sigh.

Wednesday Mar 22, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

RH Hamstring "stiff" / sore after yesterday. this is not the same as injury. Other leg, too.

Had intended to go bouldering, but spent 9 hours in the company of musicians today. We sacked the bass player from the smaller band.

That along with a deadline for medical feedback to the ME/CFS MRC bid meant .... "day off". Got home 11:30pm.

Running 1:02:26 [4] 12.3 km (5:05 / km) +154m 4:47 / km
shoes: Innovate Terraclaws

Tried to repeat last year's tuesday storming run, with some success.

Wore terraclaws for a change, which was fine, tho felt silly as 1st 5km was almost all on roads... ouch ..... but they're NOT mudclaws.

Huge hill again, but was up for it - 105m to Maes knoll in one go;

LH thigh was a bit niggly near the end - didn't stop me banging out a couple of decent paced kms at the end. Very useful, especially after 50 minutes of pretty consistent running. 4:19 then 4:10. then jogged home!

pleased. BAU is resumed. I reckon my O should be up to it again now, similar standard to last year & year before?

Pretty unscathed from w/e.

Big meeting in RUH Bath for the MEGA (ME/CFS genome alliance) project, with a globally known professor, who hugged me.

Quite a day.

Orienteering race 44:08 [5] 8.7 km (5:04 / km) +75m 4:52 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

BOK Westonbirt race, Blue course, 7.7km, 80m.

After a desperately late & knackering / adrenaline fulled night at the gig in central Bristol (bed 1:45am, sleep 3am?), I felt i shouldn't even go. So glad i did. Very sensible choice of Blue , not Brown.

I love westonbirt, and just cruised round, no pressure, made no mistakes of any note whatsoever. Ran defensively on the two downhill sections, to protect thigh (from thursday) - this worked (tho Geoff's thigh didn't behave & he was hobbling afterwards)

Rare to be under 5mins /km on my route, but this is westonbirt, it's the choice of every Phil Murray everywhere! I love this sort of O. Someone has to, and it's me.

"Rest" day prepping for big gig tonight, which will be a huge physical effort in itself (7 hours usually).
COME DOWN we still have tickets.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1251079811580616/

Still not decoded on tomorrow. Blue course? Not bother?

Thigh still a little tender - possibly over-worrying here?

Adrenaline will carry me through this evening - so i may be a vegetable tomorrow.

11 AM

Swimming 16:00 [3] 0.5 km (32:00 / km)

Horrible swim.

told (by osteopath) to do no breast stroke - only front crawl & backstroke. the latter I'd not done for about 30 years?

20 or 22 lengths, and it was painful.

Felt rough, too. Groan. Shoulder not good. LH upper thigh (front) sore from yesterday. Liz says it's micro tearing. 50/50 as to whether I bother with Westonbirt now :(

Focus now 100% on big gig tomorrow night.

Running 1:00:05 [4] 12.4 km (4:51 / km) +82m 4:41 / km
shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

Another go at a decent paced run, but had woken up feeling a bit shitty.

start OK, but garmin said i was going slowly. after 5km, i put the boot in to see if it was me who was out of shape , & did a 4:02 km. this wasn't easy.

Didn't fade too much after this , but troubled by pain in RH shin, which isn't serious, and more worryingly, LH upper thigh, which bothered me last thursday as well. aching getting worse til it was really bad at end. BUGGER.

so how many niggles is that? Thigh, shin, finger, shoulder (bad), oh and of course the hip / buttock / hamstring "thing" which prevented me from running all winter.

I'm getting old. Time to rest now.

(injured)

Climbing - shunting in Avon gorge. involves putting up a top rope., abseiling down, then climbing up with a shunt on the rope. Which popped out on one occasion, leaving me terrified.
http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/petzl-shunt-ascende...

pretty scary.

eventually seemed to get the hang of it & shunted a VS I'd first done in 1994 - it was polished then; almost impssible now ! I lived.

Shoulder not at all happy. oh dear :(

Running 1:03:00 [4] 12.53 km (5:02 / km) +180m 4:41 / km
shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Excellent run south through Whitchurch & up Maes Knoll, what a climb! 100m vertical ascent in one go.... Then getting lost over fields with Bristol spread out below me; some boggy bits.

Slight hamstring pain . A joyous run - best of the year as a training run , felt great.

Orienteering race 53:00 [5] 6.5 km (8:09 / km) +278m 6:43 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

CSC round 1, Cwm Lickey, Blue Men, 5.5km, 290m (tough!). Hungover.

Steady start, small misses at 5 (too high), 7 (too low - towed by Marcus Pinker, he was also a bit low), 13 (looking for knoll not depression), & annoyingly, 14, where i was sure my compass was right & it was, but i mis-identified a "knoll" & ran up to it - wrong!! Then the M60 lot (Gavin C. & Charles) dragged me across a vile marsh at the end - should have ignored them - they had a different control. No losses of >1 minute tho.

A bit cheesed off that the best bit - 8-9-10-11, i was accurate, enjoying it, in control, in contact, good APs - but was well off the pace on these legs. It seems i'm best when in "point yourself into the distance & run like the clappers" territory. Sad.

Found the uphills very tough & the "tussocks" a bit hard/ knackering to run over.
Hamstring pain mild enough to not bother or worry me. Better than last Sunday by a fair margin!!! Good.

Clive cocked up very badly at no 2 (4 mins lost), so i won. I assume BOK got through.... on my course we were 1-2-3-4.

Sport climbing in Wye Valley - Wyndcliff quarry - with Clio

Good day, about 6 routes, all fully bolted & therefore very sanitised.

Got a 6b in near the end then finally a 6b+, which we both dogged, then redpointed straight off . Very pleased. First climb at this grade for nearly 4 years. https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/c.php?i=372655

Shoulder troubling me, sadly.

Cycled 30 mins in evening, but worse than that, I drank too much in the pub & was basically drunk. Oops. Does cycling home sweating beer count as "training"? Is it legal?

Friday Mar 10, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

Rest day, apart from cycling to Liz's & back for a LH hamstring/ buttock massage. Featuring a "wedgie".

Tired today; a bit stiff from yesterday's tempo run.

12 PM

Running 47:30 [4] 10.0 km (4:45 / km) +79m 4:34 / km
shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

10k mostly flat run with Angela Copeland, she often bangs out 16km in 75 mins, so i wanted to see how she does it.

Quite brisk running out (5km), 23:42.

Stretched; started back. at 4:08 pace. Too quick! She tied up, I tied up, i had to stop & stretch calf out.

Passed her on hill at 5:00mins/km pace. Last mile was tough for both of us. A good run - nice day.
Then played guitars for a few hours as her chap was once in a band with me!

Running 57:37 [4] 12.0 km (4:48 / km) +83m 4:38 / km
shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Steady hours' run mainly on tarmac, some paths & fields, but keeping away from slidy stuff as everywhere is wet these days. Intention was 5min/kms for an hour, or 12km. Quite flat.

Felt OK, and chugged along, to my surprise, found at km 5 i was knocking out 4:15 - 4:19 said Garmin.

Slowed at 8km as shin hurt a little. Ran on verges & across a field.

2 mins jog w/down to make it an hour's moving time.

Osteopath: shoulder improving; finger improving.

https://www.strava.com/activities/890888997
7 PM

Cycling 45:00 [2] 6.0 km (7:30 / km) +60m 7:09 / km

Cycle to town, 22 mins, back again 3 pints later, 23 mins.

"Cat" pub in Bristol. Great evening.

Monday Mar 6, 2017 #

Note

Bloc bouldering: careful with shoulder; RH index finger taped.

Fairly OK. Did a few red problems (top end 5c). Probably shouldn't have.

I'm injured, but not badly, & keeping climbing is better than stopping totally.

Burned a few guys off (middle aged beer belly types). Felt very light again. My spinach leaf diet is clearly paying off! :)

FIT LIGHT STRONG.

Bristol super trad superstar Hazel Findlay climbs F8c in Spain - post massive shoulder injury - incredible! this is world class climbing. I'm at 6c on a good day.....

Orienteering race 1:00:21 [5] 8.6 km (7:01 / km) +279m 6:02 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

SARUM Saunter, level B, short Brown, 7.7km 245m, Fonthill

Was last here 4 years ago, god where does time go? Mark3 & I both won the SW Middle champs that day - me in M45 my final year in that class.

Was up for this. Very muddy. Not bad:

Hamstring pain - not bad, but not good either and not as good as I'd hoped.
Nav - not bad. See below.
Fitness - not bad, but no zip - not surprisingly. Muddy made it energy sapping!

Miss at no 9 - failed to aim off well, was too far west, 1min 10 (says Strava!) ARGH, come on!

no 10 - turned south too early - nothing matching - 30secs ("passed" by Colin Dickson who was shouting in agony from time to time)

13 overshot slightly (unmapped shallow ditch?) - 20 secs - trying to shake Colin off. Blasted 14 and shook him off.

20 -stopped too soon - brambly - unsure - 20 secs.

21 - stupid - tired - ended up too far west & climbed THREE contours too high - 1:30.

Some legs i was 100% pleased with my execution - not bad at all!

Roger Thetford lost 5 mins as forgot to punch road crossing.

hamstring pain acceptable. Felt v unfit. And quite achey.

Recovered very quickly. just need to do more steady runs to get back "into" it (whatever "it" is - no idea anymore).

(injured) (rest day)

(Finger & shoulder still giving plenty of jip - yawn)

Saw a new house, just round corner from the other one from Tuesday. Vastly better.

Offer of £248k cash accepted with minimal fuss.

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

The other one was ridiculous. Vastly too much work to do – huge expense, mucho hassle. This one – maybe put a conservatory on the back, in due course, but OK to go. Bathroom perfectly fine. House is just 1ft “deeper” – made all the difference.

Pond full of fish & spawn. Lockable storage units at back of garden, too.
