Note
(rest day)

Yesterday pm & late pm, back became unstable again, & i was back to SHOUTING IN AGONY (Tim Tett witnessed this when he stayed 3 weeks ago - it's quite alarming - I have no choice i just start SHOUTING - very nearly happened in a shop).

Woke this morning with LH buttock & hip in considerable pain / borderline agony again. On ibuprofen again, and really getting down.

I'd already decided on a rest period; this is getting beyond ridiculous now.

Obviously, i'm not "injured", am i? so despite daily pain I'll just sit here & pretend i'm fine, yeah? Ok, cool. Whatever.

Note
(rest day)

Offer accepted on this house. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

it's near the airport bus route (ideal - close to getting out of the city too), semi detached with parking for 2 cars (ideal), relatively cheap (got it for asking price) (others spiralled up to > £260k....), great south-east facing garden, & nearer my usual haunts in BS3 than where I am now.

... on the -ve side, bathroom is terrible (will have to move it); downstairs is not big enough; would have to extend & make another room, which would be £25k I would expect.

Liz viewed it with me, and I'm awaiting her verdict. I would have no mortgage - and i'd be back on the property ladder again - I'm currently slinging away £850 per month on a very comfortable house that is bigger inside than this one.... & in the wrong area....
7 PM

Yoga 1:20:00 [4]

First time to Yoga with Bob - used to go 2003 - 2005 then lapsed. Beginners class. Lynne took me there.

This is a very good idea; £10 well spent - will try to go every tuesday evening....
The alternative was a fast 5km road race. Very glad i did the sensible thing.

Running 45:00 [4] 8.8 km (5:07 / km) +100m 4:50 / km
shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Steady run on a cold Monday morning . Hamstring pain acceptable. Not running well though. Felt better than last Tuesday

http://www.mapometer.com/running/route_4489812.htm...

Note: Osteopath later (Rupert, not Lisa - he's the climber one) - for shoulder, but also re. back, and finger (still painful), and asked about hamstrings. given exercises for shoulders - I have "slight tendonopathy" of my RH "supraspinatus" & possible minor impingement of it. Nothing serious. Yet.

Aggravated, as unstable due to total lack of both pectoral muscles on that side. I've known that for 52 years.....

Note

Indoor climbing with Lynne, UCR

good sesh, Shoulder not too bad , seemed to improve.
Sadly R index finger (?) why ? - seemed to be hurting right off. no idea why, taped it up and climbed and no pain climbing, but sore afterwards~?

perhaps i bruised it unknowingly yesterday at O.

it's a new effing ache every effing day!!! Grrrr.............

6b+ hard red flash; got on the sharp end of 3 6c's, & did OK on them too. V strong, light, confident, & technique fab. Definitely climbing as well as ever. need to stay healthy though ..... that's the challenge now.

Orienteering race 48:55 [5] 6.6 km (7:25 / km) +255m 6:13 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

NGOC league, High Meadows, Blue, 5.9k, 300m

Hamstring OK, some pain but nothing too major. Injury box unticked because today apparently went relatively well (relative= compared to my peer group)

1,2 - fine, v good in fact. took successful route to no 2 beating others by ~1 minute,

no 3 - only time loss really - bad map, poor attack point, relative position of large depression & road etc not correct. lucky to only lose 2 mins.

rest of course (good course, nice forest - apart from no 3) - trundling along really, noticeably slow & unfit on the uphills (had to walk many), pretty skippy on flat & downhill, even ran flat out on no's 12 (path) & 15 (unmapped path). Got lucky on 13 - could easily have lost time there.

General nav & compass work seemed as good as ever, which was a pleasant surprise, as I assumed I'd be rusty.

Passed Mark3 at the last control, where he lost 6 minutes. Dear me!

Results: http://www.ngocweb.com/results/results_17/L3res.pd...
Splits: http://www.ngocweb.com/results/results_17/L3splits... - Mark3's no 16 is epic.

Stiff after , but as leg no worse, and we already know i have no "tear/strain" (it's just referred nerve pain), I feel obliged to untick injury box & cautiously resume a campaign towards the big events of the next few months.

A good day.

Cycling 50:00 [3] 8.0 mi (6:15 / mi) +90m 6:02 / mi

Cycled to Clifton

4 hours & a glass of wine later, cycled back in the dark.

Hilly.

Running 17:45 [2] 3.25 km (5:28 / km) +25m 5:16 / km
(injured) shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Another easy jog round the block post indoor climbing. Windy (Storm Doris). Leg not as totally pain free as I'd hoped, like on Monday, but not as sore as yesterday, either. So pretty good. I guess.

Note: Preceded by climbing with Clio, at UCR, pretty good but shoulder a worry - RHS , where i have no chest muscles at all. (literally). Seeing osteopath on Monday. Could be a challenge for him! :)

I did do a decent 6b+ plus a new 6b & 6a+, and a 6c with 2 rests & a new hard 6b+ with one rest.

11 AM

Running 30:00 [3] 5.7 km (5:16 / km) +65m 4:59 / km
(injured) shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

Steady run - a bit further. Wind & rain - vile.

LH hamstring OK, but not perfect as it was Monday.

Felt horribly unfit tho - not a pleasant 30 minutes. Stopped & walked / jogged back from local shops after 30 mins' running.

Hmmm. Not feeling the love here....

At last a rest day.

Monday Feb 20, 2017 #

Running 17:00 [3] 3.2 km (5:19 / km) +15m 5:11 / km
(injured) shoes: Saucony Guide 7

easy road loop after climbing.

to my delight, back to "no pain in hamstring"

lifting my knees up & prancing - felt nice, things are moving again.

demanding terrain running is something else entirely of course, but i'm happier now. see how NGOC goes on Saturday before unticking any "injury" boxes.
1 PM

Note
(injured)

Bloc indoor bouldering climbing alone.

very good hard session, despite some RH shoulder pain.

major crimpy problems attempted, with some super failures.

"worked" a 6a problem and, when warming down (last climb in fact!), sent it! Wow!

So that's a 6a climbed, 5c is my usual limit, 6a = V3, and I've only ever climbed routes with 6a cruxes on about 3-4 times in my life, back in 2012, so I know now I'm climbing as well - possibly better - than ever.

#chuffed to bits.

Walking warm up/down 2:22:00 [2] 12.0 km (11:50 / km) +105m 11:20 / km
(injured)

LH hip sadly a bit sore this morning.

Walk in big mountaineering boots, from my house to Whitchurch, & then village of Queen Charlton, and back via W-church. LH hamstring & hip improved even tho i was quite knackered today - from 45 min O race? Yep probably.

Worthwhile. only 2hr 20 walking.....

Orienteering race 45:19 [4] 5.5 km (8:14 / km) +170m 7:08 / km
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

BOK Blaise saturday series Green, 4.9km 285m

Intended to "jog" - hmmm. So, leg wasn't great, but it's wasn't awful. I'm not ready for a decent race yet. Pain, but not the "same" pain as before. So not all good, but not a disaster either. Back to being cautious for a week.

Started in a furious 30-sec intervals train which had Ben M, Megan CD, Matthew Owen, starting in front of me; Owain Jones & another b&W type & Kit Greirson just behind. Oh shit. A burnup - just what I dont' want....

Started Ok & seemed to be nailing first few controls, but to my horror, Owain, who'd already done "8km fartlek, hard", ran me down without even trying.

He made a small miss @ no 7 & i was ahead again, then at no 9, we both went up the side of the crag but I was looking to contour across, the paths weren't obvious, & i said "we need to be heading right by now!". He ignored me & ran off 90 degs wrong way. Didn't see him again.

Small miss at no 10 (went in too early yet overshot!), then no 11, lost 4 mins minimum, by coming in from below & finding NOTHING seemed to make any sense; lost; Matthew Owen in there too, I'd caught him, he was as confused as me. Should have gone in from the top! Finally relocated on fence by housing & got it. Bollocks.

From there to finish, I was OK but slow, knew the forest block from the morning's training, just 30 secs on last control as - where was the wall end? Kit caught me here.

Ben Mitch''s time awesome (even tho I pre-warned him about the map!), but Eddie also v fast. Lots of people cocking up - that's Blaise! :)

Owain finished just too late to beat me. Yarp.

(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

BOK saturday training, Blaise, with Clare Howes

Attackpoint training, 2 mini courses of 1.1km-ish, with 5-6 controls on each.

Worthwhile. Walk/jogged it & then hung 2 controls for event, having collected 3 in from the training.

Leg/ hamstring FINE.

Outdoor south wales sport climbing with Clio.

Crag (Tirpentws) wet, but we managed anyway - only 5 routes, mostly wet, but a decent crack at a 6c/+ route which i went up twice.
Too wet to flash; crux v hard too. I'll be back.

Great day out. 10 hours, including pub afterwards......

Another indoor climb, helping out a Dad on half term, his daughter & mate (both 15 yo girls) were there - climbing harder than we were. It's just embarrassing now. #hasbeens

knackered, more of a 6b day than 6b+ (totally shut down on the latter grade today).

need 3 days until next climb please.

Ate one fewer potato in past 24 hours than normal, in an effort to starve the carbs / sugar out of body. Failed, as i had leftover chocolate from Spain.

Addicted.

Felt super light, though. Spiderman?

Running 18:30 [2] 2.9 km (6:23 / km) +20m 6:10 / km

Running 13:30 [1] 1.8 km (7:30 / km) +15m 7:12 / km
(injured) shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

Very easy slow jog to test out leg - 1st run for 17 days. Flat road.

All seemed fine. No hip/ hamstring / buttock pain.

Will try to do it again in 2-3 days and go slightly further - but not faster.

small steps.

Note
(injured)

Back vastly better - good.

Rather impetuously, climbed indoors @ UCR with Clio.

Had my best indoor sesh this winter by far - flashing 3 6b+'s, one of which has always needed 3 rests before. WTF? Felt incredibly light, & strong. (see note below).

Tim Tett came & watched & bought us tea! He would dearly like to join in.... one day.

Starved myself before, due to high blood sugar this monring - took Tim's blood too (he's not a wimp), & his mmol was LESS THAN HALF MINE (Tim: 5.7; me: 12.2 - unacceptable).

Will now have a supper of salad, nuts, and maybe half a roast potato, though I've been told to cut down on potatoes. No beer.

Blood mmol down to 5.9 when i got home.

Thursday Feb 9, 2017 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

LH Buttock very sore this morning - from osteo yesterday (lower back crunch - referred into buttock?). Almost going into spasm as i move around house - Jesus - is there NO END TO MY WOES?????

Diabetes quarterly review. I've got worse again. HBA1C now 60. Nurses disappointed. So am I. told to up the DRUGS by 50%. oh dear.

Need to really look at my diet etc. & booze intake. Sadly, this will mean some self-starvation. Yes, really. nearly all foodstuffs convert to sugar.

Not running for 3 months means i'm not burning anything like the sugars i was, too, & swimming & climbing are not the same - nor's the cycling I do . (badly)

2017 is going to be a challenge. It's already a challenge.

I'm not going to Interland.

****** OPINIONS SOUGHT*****

I finance my ridiculous, lazy, holiday-heavy, "driftwood" lifestyle through renting out my flat in Clifton, since 2001. (.... thanks Dad, 1933 - 1993 xxx)

Currently managing two young tenants, who aren't mates, & one has just given me notice. Sigh. Sick of fannying around with managing 2 independent tenants! Young 20-something men who drink & eat takeaways!!! and don't clean! ! !

So i asked James (who's remaining) if he really wants to live there too? as i could kick him out, tart the place up, move in myself (it's mine, after all), and then get a COUPLE in. Maybe.

But - SHOCK - he says he'd like to buy it off me - for cash!!! Like, WTF? Does he know how much it's worth? Do i? (no). He's NOT a high earner - maybe he's just inherited, or has minted 'rents?

I'm currently renting a house which is..... OK, but it's not my "forever" home. I'm still idly looking at houses to buy in south bristol to have as a base for my travels which I'm planing the next 2 years.

I suspect I'd be due capital gains tax of £££ a huge amount. Maybe I "move" back in with James for "6 months" , and that could reduce it? I assume i would pay cap gains on profit since 2001, when it was probably worth about £100k.

Thoughts, anyone?
Anyone reading?

Cycled to Hengrove leisure centre - 2nd day in a row.

Swim - 1st for 3 weeks, but i was away last week (note to BrandNewMe)!

Total 42 lengths of 25m..... hmmm.... maths isn't my strong point...... 1050m?

all with 1- 1:30 rest in between. all breast stroke. Hamstring / buttock not too great today, never mind.

4 warmup
12 in 8:43 (par = 9 mins)
4 flat out (100m) in 2:28
12 in 8:41 (300m)
4 flat out in 2:26

Cycle home.

Note

Osteopath - second session.

Thinks (as does Liz) that i may have / have had a micro tear in my upper inner hamstring.

One crunch (versus 4 last month - only two of which seemed to do anything).

Seemed pretty good. Said back "almost perfectly" straight. Wow. Now to rest for 2 days. (ie til friday???)

Positive?

Standout routes a 6a+ (route 3), which was v sustained & technical at the grade, and the only 6b, which I onsighted with a proper effort. three UK 5c moves - bang bang bang - each followed by a bolt . My smile was wide when I got to bolt 4.

Fantastic stuff. Loving climbing.
