I'm scoping out cycling options - Jon doesn't think I'll ride here. I'm taking that as a challenge...

I do not like riding on roads with cars at all, so I stick to the bike paths as much as possible. In this area, that means there are often lots of crossings at grade, which can be a drag. Also, at certain times of day, the trails can be extremely cluttered with training groups and/or tourists walking or cycling haphazardly.

My favorite ride is on the W&OD trail starting further out in Reston (~30 minute drive from the house) and riding out to Leesburg and back. Less crossings and people out further, but I don't do this often because it seems wasteful of time and money to skip the parts that start 3 minutes from the house.

Mount Vernon Trail along the Potomac can be wonderful at the right time, but it can be busy, busy and is narrow and twisty in parts.

What kind of cycling are you looking for? MTB, long rides on the road, rides with the kids? All of the above? :)

Fort B might be a good choice for road cycling. The place is huge!
