Tuesday Mar 31, 2020 #

3 PM

Mountain Bike 55:00 [2] 11.5 mi (4:47 / mi)

Standard MTB loop, C-W (opposite direction to usual) for a change.

Monday Mar 30, 2020 #

4 PM

Trail running 30:00 [3] 3.5 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

Trying out a new loop equivalent to Digley but without gates, etc. A bit long but will have to do. Calf good.
5 PM

Gym 20:00 [2]

Joined the EUOC core and mobility session via Zoom.
This is 3 times a week but I think just once (along with the SYO sessions on Thursday) will do me. Apologies to any students watching the feed from our garage ;-)
8 PM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

4 x 10 heel raises.

Sunday Mar 29, 2020 #

4 PM

Trail running 18:00 [3] 2.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

Walk into Holmfirth with Janet then run home through ropeswing wood. Calf much improved.
6 PM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

4 x 10 heel raises. Still discomfort in L calf.

Saturday Mar 28, 2020 #

10 AM

Mountain Bike 1:50:00 [2] 24.0 mi (4:35 / mi)

Modified version of the Wessenden loop. Only one gate and I managed to open and shut it without touching it.
Stiff NEasterley so pretty quick along the canal towpath.
7 PM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

4 x 10 heel raises.

Friday Mar 27, 2020 #

12 PM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

4 x 10 heel raises. L calf still a little painful and DOMS in various areas after circuits last night.
5 PM

Trail running 15:00 [2] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

Walk/jog with Janet. This is just the jogging bit.
Calf hopefully within acceptable levels of soreness.

Thursday Mar 26, 2020 #

9 AM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

4 x 10 heel raises both legs. L calf still a little sore.
No excuses for not making these more regular at the moment.
10 AM

Mountain Bike 1:51:00 [2] 23.0 mi (4:50 / mi)

2 x standard MTB loop.
First lap 56, second lap 55.
Hopefully this meets the Scrappy test ;-) No gates and not too far from home. Plenty of evidence that people still think that it's ok to drive to their exercise, although now there are concrete blocks across the entrance to Digley car parks to discourage them.
7 PM

Gym 30:00 [2]

SYO circuits. Virtual of course, with Janet and Louise in the garage.

Wednesday Mar 25, 2020 #

Note
(rest day)

Feeling very slightly under the weather today but nothing much. A bit of gardening which I am convinced is more risky than cycling. For me at least.

Tuesday Mar 24, 2020 #

10 AM

Road bike 3:30:00 [2] 47.0 mi (4:28 / mi)

Holme Moss, Glossop, Snake, Strines.
Making the most of the weather and my daily allowance. My calf didn't appreciate it however but past caring.
I'm pretty sure this was within the new rules. On my own and starting /finishing at home. Equally sure that there were plenty of folk out there not within the rules...

Monday Mar 23, 2020 #

4 PM

Road running 5:00 [3] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

Working from home Day 1.
Half a lap of the block. As much as I could manage before calf too sore. This would be frustrating if there was anything to train for.

Sunday Mar 22, 2020 #

Note
(rest day)

If you call driving to Edinburgh and back a rest...

Saturday Mar 21, 2020 #

9 AM

Note

Walk with Janet from the car park on the A635 mid way between Holmfirth and Greenfield. Black Hill, Laddow Rocks, Chew Reservoir, Dovestones, Alderman Hill, Broadstone Trig.
14 miles (4 hours 45). Lots of bog bashing at a pretty brisk pace so good strength training at least. Achilles fine but some soreness in L calf. Would I have got round BOC? Who knows but suspect I'd be knackered for the relay at least. Hope I can be in one piece for whenever it is rearranged.

Friday Mar 20, 2020 #

9 AM

Road bike 2:50:00 [2] 38.0 mi (4:28 / mi)

Greenfield, Denshaw, Buckstones and back through Huddersfield. Strong (and cold) NE wind making it slow progress all the way back over Buckstones.
2 PM

Note

Golf with Andy and Roy. 21 Stableford points for the 15 holes.

Thursday Mar 19, 2020 #

10 AM

Road running 9:00 [3] 1.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

Round the block to test my calf. It's sore but I was able to run with some discomfort. Probably just as well I don't need to rush back for anything.
11 AM

Road bike 55:00 [2] 13.0 mi (4:14 / mi)

Jackson Bridge loop (as 27/12 and 11/12). Calf still sore on the bike so didn't push too hard up the Jackson Bridge climb. Surprised to be only 30s down on my pb.
2 PM

Note

Golf with Andy and Mick. 25 Stableford points for the 15 holes. Trying to enjoy my golf whilst I still can despite playing terribly.

Wednesday Mar 18, 2020 #

5 PM

Gym 20:00 [2]

Garage circuits.

Tuesday Mar 17, 2020 #

Note
(rest day)

I've decided to have an easy week. That was always the plan leading up to BOC. My calf needs a break from running in any case and my mountain bike's brakes need fixing. Bike shop busy and can't fit it in until next week.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what the plan is. It feels a bit like 2001 but the difference is that there's no option to go abroad to compete. Thank goodness I went to POM. In 2001 we were orienteering again by the summer. This time the break could be a lot longer. I hope not, but fear a whole year will be written off.

In the meantime (whilst I'm well at least) I will continue to run and cycle (alone). Hopefully this will continue to be allowed, but if not, we'll see....
Luckily I don't live in a big conurbation so keeping isolated is pretty easy.
8 AM

Note

Golf. Pro's mid week comp over 15 holes. 28 Stableford points. Fingers crossed that I can at least carry on playing golf. ...

Pilates 1:00:00 [0]

Julie worked us hard tonight because that's it for the foreseeable future :(

Sunday Mar 15, 2020 #

10 AM

Cycling 50:00 [1] 11.0 mi (4:33 / mi)

To Deighton via main road then canal towpath. With Janet so easy pace.
Used old bike as my MTB needs new brake pads.
12 PM

Orienteering race 44:00 [4] 4.5 mi (9:47 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw (3)

CompassSport Heat, Fixby and Bradley Woods.
Blue Men course, 6.6km 170m.
L calf tight warming up. Sharp twinge coming out of #4 and the rest of the race then became a gradually increasing hobble. Probably because I was distracted I got ahead of myself at #7 and navigated as though I was leaving #8. Didn't make sense initially but eventually did so was unaware that I'd missed #8 until download. Doh!
Results: http://obasen.orientering.se/winsplits/online/en/d...
I reckon it would have been very close between Parkino and me had I gone to #8...
RG: https://www.epoc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#96&cou...

Final results confirm SYO won despite my incompetence. Hopefully we'll be back in the forest in time for the Final...
1 PM

Cycling 1:00:00 [1] 11.0 mi (5:27 / mi)

Home from Deighton. More effort as gradually uphill and into slight headwind. L calf not happy.

Note: pretty sure the calf issue is the usual spasm rather than an actual pull/tear. I wouldn't be able to carry on at all if it was torn. Therefore not too worried. If I let it settle for a few days it should be OK to at least start next weekend. However it's probably academic..

Saturday Mar 14, 2020 #

9 AM

Mountain Bike race 2:15:00 [2] 23.0 mi (5:52 / mi)

NYMBO 2.5 hour score from Ilkley.
Treasure hunt type event with clues to answer so lots of faffing with pencil and answer sheet.
14 out of 30 controls. 280 points.
Large area and would have needed 5 hours to clear the lot so lots of decisions to be made. I'm not sure heading north initially was a good move as insufficient time to get many controls around Rombalds Moor. Bike now needing attention.

Friday Mar 13, 2020 #

8 AM

Note

Golf with Andy, Neil and Mark. 15 holes on temp greens. 30 Stableford points.
3 PM

Trail running 26:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

Lap of Digley to test my Achilles. Not bad. Certainly good enough to run Sunday as long as I am sensible. Especially given it could be the last orienteering for a while. ..
Edit (Sunday): Although Achilles (usual R) was OK my other calf (L) tightened up a bit towards the end of the run. Didn't think too much of this at the time but obviously it was significant.
8 PM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

4 x 10 heel raises.

Thursday Mar 12, 2020 #

8 AM

Road bike 2:15:00 [2] 31.0 mi (4:21 / mi)

Out early as I'm helping Simon again this afternoon. Huddersfield, Marsden, Standedge, Diggle, Uppermill and back over Saddleworth Moor. Strong westerly so slow out on A62 but quite speedy back on the A635.

Wednesday Mar 11, 2020 #

5 PM

Gym 20:00 [2]

Garage circuits. Still no hopping.
10 PM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

3 x 10 heel raises then ice.

Tuesday Mar 10, 2020 #

2 PM

Mountain Bike 2:00:00 [2] 24.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Wessenden loop. Wet and windy. Canal towpath particularly wet and river and canal water levels very high.

Monday Mar 9, 2020 #

7 PM

Pilates 1:00:00 [0]

Achilles grumbly today. Hopefully will settle down if I don't run for a few days.

Sunday Mar 8, 2020 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 46:03 [4] 4.5 mi (10:14 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw (3)

DVO Event, Linacre Woods.
Blue course, 6.3km 190m.
Ran Blue because Achilles isn't quite right. Tried to run within myself rather than race flat out. Just one small error at #15 where I mistook the ditch for the stream (nearly a minute). Achilles OKish.

RG: http://www.derwentvalleyorienteers.org.uk/results/...

Trail running 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw (3)

Warm up and down (through northern section of woods we didn't visit on the course).
Ice once back home.

Saturday Mar 7, 2020 #

8 AM

Note

Golf. Saturday comp over 15 holes. 20 Stableford points. Not good.
3 PM

Hilly (1,500ft according to Strava) ride mostly off road. Yateholme, Digley, Goodbent Lodge, down Magdalen Road, up Harden Moss Road.

Friday Mar 6, 2020 #

10 AM

Trail running 26:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 780v3

Steady lap of Digley. Achilles grumbly. Ice after.
1 PM

Note

Golf with Neil and Mark. First time approaching something like proper golf for some time and I struggled. 23 Stableford points for the 15 holes.

Thursday Mar 5, 2020 #

8 AM

Road bike 2:15:00 [2] 32.0 mi (4:13 / mi)

Hades, Upper Denby, High Hoyland, Emley Moor, Kirkburton, Farnley Tyas, Honley (as 18/1). Foggy and icy in places. Out early in order to be back in time for...
12 PM

Note

An afternoon helping Simon deliver an orienteering experience to Primary School kids in Knottingley. Hectic.

Wednesday Mar 4, 2020 #

shoes: New Balance 780v3

Blackpool Bridge circuit (as 16/2). Still exceptionally wet underfoot. A bit of a struggle.
8 PM

Calf strengthening 2:00 [0]

4 x 10 heel raises. Ice after.

Orienteering race 1:05:13 [4] 5.5 mi (11:51 / mi)
shoes: VJ Integrator (blue)

SYO National Event, Burbage.
Short Brown course, 7.4km 366m.
Off early before the first official start in order to get back for my job. Realised at #1 that I had forgotten to pick up any loose descriptions so good practice for the relays. Also had to wake up controls #4 to #7. No major errors just some hesitations in places.
1st old man, 43 seconds behind Grace Molloy which I'll take.

4 x 10 heel raises both legs.
Been too long but, pleasingly, both calves now about the same strength.
