walking 4:00:00 [3]

Hill near Tosbotn ( such a great name :-). Some serious off-road on way up and down on lower slopes, but we managed to go up wrong mountain - lack of map and vague written/verbal descriptions led us to go left a ridge too soon! Anyway a great mountain and several patches of snow and some epic rock slabs/scrapes bedrock.

Swimming 5:00 [3]

A quick wee dip during the descent, lovely and refreshing

Monday Jul 30, 2018 #

Note

Walk to Karst landscape area - interesting dolinas, sink holes and disappearing river. Out for 4 hours, tired by end.

Sunday Jul 29, 2018 #

Note

Feeling knackered - delayed O-ringen tiredness. Weather also poor (first dreich day of trip).

Saturday Jul 28, 2018 #

Note

A couple of wee walks to view points, waterfalls etc

Swimming 10:00 [2]

Nice lake in Swedish mountains, good site for the night - huge flat gravel area ( diggings from a hydro tunnel)

orienteering race 45:00 [5]

Feeling pretty washed out (another early start for Es 0910 call-up then a3 hour wait till my start...). Tried to warm-up well but struggling with tiredness and heat.
Started OK then just before 2 was overtaken by my 1min man, let this distract me and we proceeded to faff for a couple of mins. 3 OK then left it reading 4-5... got about 200m up hill then realised what was wrong. Relocated instantly and calmly ran to path and downhill to bend and into control. Probably another 2 mins binned ( and C started 6 mins behind).
Steadied myself but feeling very tired and mentally struggling to focus on map reading/compass - had to force it. A slight wobble at 8 and I think another M55 went past. Pushed hard from here but very careful. No sprint finish to scare me. Had a drink then checked on screens... C was only 32 secs behind at finish. Phew!
One race too many this week! Still if I’d been offered 9th place at start of week I’d have snapped at it!
6th place was less than 1 minutes ahead and 5th only 3.something... could have should have :-)

steady run 25:00 [3]

Warmup - spent a large part of it spotting old stars of 20-30 years ago (45-50-55 etc)!

Note

Walk up Skuleberget by direct route (lots of ladders), loop of top and back down long way at end of ridge. Really cool mountain, had a marked location - worlds highest ancient sea level 296m
Out for ca 60 mins active

Thursday Jul 26, 2018 #

steady run warm up/down 25:00 [3]

To start, long way, hot (even at 0840)

orienteering 44:00 [5]

O-ringen day 4 M55. Early start (up at 0530) and already hot at 8am. Legs feeling a bit tired especially up hills. Great course - lots of detail and changes. Mostly OK, ended 8th today and 6th for chasing start - 23 minutes down! - the competition is crazily high.
Ran mostly straight and it worked OK, maybe could have saved a bit with other options. Mostly limited by physical - struggling from early on and digging deep. Also usual problem reading detailed map at anything faster than a slow walk!

Note

Walk in Skuleskogen to visit Slåttdalsskrevan ( hugely impressive gorge in the hills). Out for about 2 hours, hope it doesn’t affect tomorrow!

Wednesday Jul 25, 2018 #

steady run 20:00 [3]

To start and a bit more there.

orienteering 30:00 [5]

O-ringen day 3 M55. “Middle distance” so a little over 1km shorter..
Started faster than previous days and used a lot of compass and run, trying to minimise map time. Much more aggressive in the terrain, trying to attack rather than pussy-foot around. Very scrappy in control circles but nothing more than 20-30secs. Right on the ragged edge! 6th only 1-33 down but apparently the winner made a 3min mistake...!
Pleased with result, will try same again tomorrow.

Swimming 10:00 [2]

Messing around in Baltic swell - fun.

Tuesday Jul 24, 2018 #

Note

Various walks near campsite, stunning hills and cliffs.

Swimming 5:00 [2]

Brief splash in Baltic during walk

Monday Jul 23, 2018 #

steady run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

To start plus some extra stuff. Hot today and sunny so keeping in shade as much as possible.

orienteering race 45:00 [5]

O-ringen day 2. M55, 8th... 1 place behind CM
Much better feeling in legs today despite heat and sun. Much more aggressive, ran most legs straight, a few wobbles a n circles but all quickly corrected. Threw away a bit on long leg by attempting a climb saving option then realising it was far worse and correcting.
Much happier and with a rest day hope to be even better on day 3

Swimming 8:00 [2]

Baltic swim - impressive swell!

Sunday Jul 22, 2018 #

steady run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

To start - plenty of time once there, plus a few strides and stretching. Cooler today (though humid after massive thunder storms overnight), feeling better for this but legs still feel drained.

orienteering race 47:00 [5]

O-ringen day 1, M55. Technically OK but a few misses and hesitations in circles (struggling to read all detail with sweat in my eyes!). Probably lost 2-3 mins in total.
27th 10 mins down but only 3 mins off 7th...
Felt terrible running especially on uphills, hope this improves over the week...

Saturday Jul 21, 2018 #

orienteering 40:00 [4]

Gullvik, fromcampsite early - to avoid heat. Back very stiff at start so easy walk/ jog to my start. OK in terrain till about half way then stopped to stretch it. OK till end. Starting to pick lines of better running in the terrain. Still very slow and lethargic - hopefully a good coffee and a big race will get me going a bit tomorrow.
Less hot but very humid, short rain shower but hardly laid the dust!

steady run 20:00 [2]

Jog/walk to start and back from last control

Friday Jul 20, 2018 #

orienteering 55:00 [4]

Bergsjön, O-ringen training. Feeling better than yesterday but still slow - an uphill start made things hard for myself. Most controls OK but drifted right to first control - diagonally up massively detailed slope. Improved after this and moving O K on flat and downs.
Gonna be tough with the detailed slopes and heat.

Note

Short slow (very) wander round some trails at Skuleskogen - too hot and too tired for more.

Swimming 15:00 [2]

Swim at Gullviks - slightly cooler air than yesterday - lovely!

Thursday Jul 19, 2018 #

orienteering 37:00 [3]

Steady round a few controls at Åsberget - O-ringen training area. Feeling very sluggish -walked much of uphills! Area dry as a bone - no water features at all and most undergrowth scorched and crispy. May carry water on courses.
Map pretty clear - but at the pace I was going it should be!

steady run 12:00 [3]

To start & from last control, horribly hot in sun.

Swimming 10:00 [2]

Easy swim from Gullviks badplats- first Baltic swim of trip - and certainly not baltic! Not very salty at all.

Wednesday Jul 18, 2018 #

walking 3:00:00 [2]

Up Ottfjället from Vålådalen with S and E. Feeling terrible, no energy at all, managed to get to first top then cut short as feeling wasted. Focused hard to keep moving on descent.
Possibly lack of food or else lack of sleep (too hot to sleep at night) or maybe just not recovering.

Tuesday Jul 17, 2018 #

steady run 47:00 [3]

Early morning run with S from campsite at Lit. Not very exciting track/road but got it done

Canoeing 4:00:00 [1]

Upstream from campsite to dam - with some pushing/pulling of canoe over rapids and shallows. Very hot, tired by end.

Monday Jul 16, 2018 #

steady run 48:00 [3]

Pre-breakfast run with E & S - heard/saw capercaillie in the trees beside the track, found large black feather later - from. Caper?

Swimming 5:00 [2]

Splash in river at end - found drowned wee animal, reckon a lemming - my first!

Swimming 10:00 [3]

At Lit camping initially in bathing pond then into main river ( much more pleasant!). Ridiculously hot again.

Sunday Jul 15, 2018 #

Swimming 5:00 [3]

Short swim at gorge where we parked up - fantastic location in middle of nowhere. Hit 31C today so glad of water to cool off.

Saturday Jul 14, 2018 #

steady run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Run to start of O training with S and SP at Gronklint.

orienteering 45:00 [4]

Short c-p course - lovely forest with loads of cloud-berries in marshes. Going OK but very tired (legs and head) by end.

Swimming 15:00 [2]

Friday Jul 13, 2018 #

Note

Rest day

Thursday Jul 12, 2018 #

walking 5:00:00 [2]

Glittertind with S. Struggling on climb - lacking leg push, not sure if not enough food or else just tired. Reindeer (about 30) near foot of big climb and a female Ptarmigan trying to decoy us away from her 2 chicks - got within 3-4m of her before she moved.
Thunder away to south and east when we were at top (snow field that edged out to a large cornice) so headed back straight away. Plenty of Norwegians heading up not apparently concerned by the possibility of lightning at the top of Norway’s second highest peak... brave or ignorant?

Wednesday Jul 11, 2018 #

walking 4:00:00 [2]

Up Galdhoepiggen with S. 13km 1500m climb up in 2-30 total 30 mins at summit and 1-30 down. Amazing views from summit - peaks glaciers and more glaciers - amazing AMAZING!
Met a stream of others climbing as we descended, smug in having been first to top;-)

Note

Wander up to waterfall above Spiterstugen - great spot but the force of the water was a bit too much to risk going under :-)
Landscape here is fantastic- mountains and glaciers looming all round and ground covered with lovely plants rather than peat bog!

Tuesday Jul 10, 2018 #

Note

Walk at Lom - small way up hillside behind town, but felt tough, steep and lots of sneaky small quiet mozzies that bit ankles and behind the knees!

steady run 40:00 [3]

Along valley from Spiterskulen with S. Legs felt surprisingly decent. Still 16 hours more recovery

Monday Jul 9, 2018 #

walking 4:30:00 [3]

Terrible night in bivvy bag - too hot, mosquitoes then it started raining and got cold. Up at 6am, moving by 20 past, missed out all 2000ers but track back (short direct way of 21km) climbed to 1650m to avoid cliffs above lake.
Felt dreadful the whole way - suspect not refuelled last night. Really struggled on uphill - plus the rain turned to sleety hail by the top... Strong tailwind did as much hindrance as help.
Eventually reached Rondfassbu Hytte and plodded back along dirt road to van.
4 hours later it is +17c down in the valley - the sleet seems like a bad dream!

Sunday Jul 8, 2018 #

walking 9:00:00 [3]

Attempt on 2 day round of Rondane 2000ers with S. Apparently someone has done the whole lot in 8+hours... We did 4 (of 10) in 10 hours start to finish. Then bivvied near Doralseter.
Amazing day out but mountains are huge - we did 2500m climb all on boulderfields and covered about 30km. Never been on such raw rock covered mountains, amazing.
The 8 hour man - I suspect that he did it when lots of snow on hills.

Saturday Jul 7, 2018 #

steady run 40:00 [3]

Pleasant run with S at Kasen (Swedish side if Svinesund) tired
Then more driving to Mysoster in Rondane

Friday Jul 6, 2018 #

Note

11hours driving, Amsterdam to Sweden. German autobahn fairly shit with lots of monster jams - 80 mins for 8km in one...

Thursday Jul 5, 2018 #

steady run 31:00 [3]

Lap of Dess Woods with S. Very pleasant.

Wednesday Jul 4, 2018 #

steady run 54:00 [3]

Lap of Dess Woods and cowshed alley + bullevard. Roasting hot day - top off from start. Looking for shade on run - ran faster in sun and slowed to jog in shade :-)

Swimming 20:00 [2]

Queens Loch with S. Like a nice warm bath (with added weeds...). Plenty of beautiful blue damsel flies and a mother such with 7 ducklings.

Tuesday Jul 3, 2018 #

Intervals 20:00 [5]

Intervals on railway line at Dinnet (lots of shade in trees!) 10x2+1. Working on good style and high knees and hips forward. Good session.

steady run warm up/down 30:00 [3]

Monday Jul 2, 2018 #

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Matwork session, feeling good.

Physio exercises 8:00 [2]

half set...

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Run round map-run course at H&M parks. Phone didn't register start point. Deleted Maprun app - seems to be a waste of time.

Sunday Jul 1, 2018 #

Note

rest day - though spent too long gardening in the sun and felt fairly crap afterwards.
