Orienteering 2:50:30 [3] *** 7.4 km (23:02 / km) +410m 18:03 / km
18c shoes: Saucony Trail

Red at Calero! Ugh. This was quite horrible. I never really felt good out there and the course was quite physically challenging, which made things worse. I made a bunch of little mistakes out there and a couple of big ones. Part of this was just that I couldn't seem to make sense of the 7.6m contours and part of it was just that I was tired, I think. At one point a did a 180 and just could not seem to wrap my mind around the fact that I needed to turn around even though everything was telling me I was not where I thought I was. The hill was too steep (oh, it's probably just the ginormous contours), the hill was too open (oh, the trees are far apart here...), the hill was too rocky (hmm...there shouldn't really be any rocks at all). I finally turned around after climbing like 8 or 9 contours up a hill on the wrong side of the valley. Sigh.

The rest of the course can be summed up by the flock of circling vultures that followed me for the last 40 minutes or so. Vultures look weird when they are peering down at you. Also, when they are expecting a meal at any moment, they do not circle at a particularly high altitude, and they are extremely large and intimidating.

The day was salvaged by a fun afternoon and evening and an extremely early bedtime.
