running 40:00 [2]

Jogged around on West Campus. Fun, but the sun felt hot.

At lunch I looked at the WMTBOC gps tracks. It looks fun. I wish we had some terrain that interesting for MTB orienteering.

Note

I mowed the lawn. We got a new mower a few weeks ago. I like the new mower. It is quiet. That seems to make mowing easier.

I also spent some time looking at the WMTBOC sprint maps. One thing I noticed was the MapMagic logo. That was cool. I like to think of that as a small connection to Orienteer Kansas. Another thing I noticed was that the main difficulty (for me) would probably be keeping track of where I was without being able to use my thumb on the map. I practiced that a few years ago. I improved. But I'm sure I've regressed.

On bike paths to check out the water levels at Clinton. The level of water is down a few feet. But it was something like 20+ feet above normal. I've read that they are releasing enough water that the level is going down about 0.5 feet per 24 hours.

I went for an easy run after a light breakfast. I shuffled around on West Campus. I ran slowly. I felt ok. It wasn't yet hot and the breeze felt good.

I think I'll do an easy bike ride later in the day.

Note

Woke up this morning feeling strange. I got up, had some breakfast, watched the TDF coverage, then went back to sleep. I slept for an hour. During that hour Mary disappeared. It took me awhile to find the note that she left. I was kind of confused. I feel better, but plan to make it a very easy day.

MTB on bike paths and a little on the road.

I felt a bit slow. I went a bit slow. I think today's travel and the afternoon heat took it out of me.

At Gunpowder Falls State Park near Bel Air, MD. My plan was to head north from the parking area and explore the trails, but the trail under the highway was closed. Instead went south. That was fine - plenty of stuff to explore. There's a trail that follows the river and gets a lot of use by people who swim. There are a few side trails that go up into the hills.

At one point I lost the trail. It wasn't getting much use and there were a couple of fallen trees. I crawled under one of the trees and couldn't find the trail. I ended up back tracking. Back tracking meant I was out a little longer than I'd expected. It was starting to get a little dark in the denser parts of the forest. I picked up the pace a little for maybe 10 minutes to make sure I'd be back before dark.

I found a park near where I'm working. Open Street Map showed plenty of trails. When I arrived around 6:30 I spotted a big gate with a sign that it closed at 7:00. I thought about trying to find another park, then decided to just do a short run and finish before I got locked in.

Anyway...I had a nice bit short (and sweaty) run.

Sunflower Games on the Washburn Campus. It was fun, but I am really disappointed with my orienteering. Going over the map, I would say that I had only 1 or 2 legs where I was orienteering properly. I also skipped a control. Running wasn't so good, but the heat wasn't so bad.

We had an Estonian ski orienteer who won the course. That was kind of fun.

Note

Considered going for a short bike ride. But, "feels like 113°F." I mowed the lawn instead. That went well.

running 45:00 [3]

Got out the door early when the temp was a relatively comfortable 80F. I took it easy and took plenty of short walk breaks.

Got home just as Mary woke up and we went out for breakfast, then came home to watch the last hour or so of the Tour De France. A nice start to the day.

The forecast is for a storm to pass by tonight and the high tomorrow to be in the low/mid 80s. Just in time for tomorrow's Sunflower Games.

Lawrence, KS (66047)
Fair
99°F (feels like 109°F)

I shuffled around on West Campus. I filled my hat with ice cubes. That meant I had a cold head and cool water flowing down my neck. Still, it was hot and uncomfortable. By the end my HR was at 157 at a slow jog.

Note

"An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot weather is expected, during which heat illnesses
are likely. Stay in an air-conditioned building and check up on
relatives and neighbors. Postpone any non-essential outdoor
activities planned during the midday and afternoon. If outdoor
activities are necessary, drink plenty of water, wear light and
loose fitting clothing, reduce strenuous activities, and take
frequent breaks. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool
and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1."

MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

When I got home it was hot. So I decided to wait a bit. Mary called and we chatted on the phone. I told her it was hot. I checked the LJWorld front page and it said it was 100F. Yuck.

Around 7, I got out the door and rolled around on the bike paths. It did feel nice to move around.

A sweaty jog on West Campus. So-so. I met a nice little dog at the end of my run. That was nice.

Note

Met with a KU prof at the Burger Stand to come up with a way to include orienteering into his class this fall. I think we've got a plan.

Mary and I each drew a course on the map at Water Tower Park. I ran my course, then traded maps and ran the course Mary set. It was fun and a good way to get in some O' training.

Running didn't feel very good.

MTB on the bike paths - mostly on the LL through Baker Westlands and Burrough's Creek. OK, but didn't feel great. I probably should have waited another 30-45 minutes before I started to let the temp feel a little more pleasant and the sun a little less strong.

Note

I found a bunch of lidar data that I'd never seen before. Anyone had any experience with it?

ftp://rockyftp.cr.usgs.gov/vdelivery/Datasets/Staged/Elevation/Non_Standard_Contributed/NGA_US_Cities/

Locally it includes data for Topeka, KC and Wichita. We've already got pretty good data for those places, so it isn't all that important. They've got shapefiles of building footprints and trees. That might be useful for some quick remote map projects.

There is also data for some places that I hadn't seen before, like Dallas, TX, and Madison, WI.

I got out the door early-ish. I shuffled around on West Campus. It seemed harder than I'd expected. It also felt muggy and the sun was warm. The shade was nice.

I mowed the lawn. It was more fun than mowing the lawn.

Shuffled around on West Campus. Temp was reasonable (mid 80s) and humidity wasn't too terrible. Fun.

Note

Feeling worn out. When Mary's out of town my routine gets messed up and I don't get enough sleep. Took a day off.

When I was biking yesterday I noticed that my brakes were not really working very well. I watched a youtube video to see how to replace the pads on the disc brakes. It looked easy. I stopped at a bike shop to buy the pads. They only had one set in stock. I figured that was better than nothing. I replaced the pads that seemed to be most worthless. Just like the youtube video - easy. But, the you tube videos always show people working on really clean bikes. Mine isn't. I need to hit another shop to get another set of brake pads.

MTB on roads, single track and the levee. It seemed kind of hot, so I took it a bit easy. Fun.

MTB cycling 2:30:00 [1]

Mid afternoon MTB ride on the bike path, levee and single track. I biked to/from the river trail via Baker Wetlands and Burrough's Creek. The river trail is only open on the "race loop."

I felt ok but the heat was a bit of a chore. I slowed over the last 30 minutes.

I didn't get out in the a.m. because I watched the TDF and soccer match. Then I hung out a bit before I got going. To try to help with the heat, I wore my cooling vest/shirt for about 20 minutes before I started. I also carried some some sport drink that's supposed to be good for heat (lots of potassium and sodium, I guess....I mix it at half strength). I guess those things helped.

I should have mowed the lawn today. I didn't. Maybe tomorrow.

running 45:00 [2]

I got out the door after watching the live TDF coverage. Would have been better to get out earlier, but wasn't too terrible. I felt much better than I did yesterday.

When I got home I watched the Sweden-England soccer and then fixed my bike derailleur (after watching a youtube video).

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

Easy biking with Mary on the bike paths to/from Baker Wetlands' parking lot.

My rear derailleur wasn't shifting properly. Also, I was feeling overheated by the time we got home. When we got home, I crashed on the coach for 15 minutes before my body started feeling ok.

Later in the day I put on my cooling vest/shirt and watched some TV. That helped me feel better. I think I was a bit dehydrated, too. That didn't make things better.

Note

We did some tourist stuff today. We went to the Natural History Museum at KU. I spent a bunch of time there when I was growing up. It was fun to see some of the old exhibits that I remember. We also went out to dinner at the fish restaurant in the 700-block of Mass. It was fine.

8 AM

cycling 30:00 [1]

I got out the door reasonably early, but not as early as I'd planned. This is biking to/from the map I ran on + a little bit extra.

orienteering 35:00 [3] ***

I ran the 4 point course from our last event at Lindley Hall. I then re-ran the other course, but took controls in the reverse order. Fun.

It was most fun when rain was falling. It was least fun when it was sunny. Fortunately, more rain and clouds than sun.

MTB on the wet bike paths. Most of the time I was on the LL, including along Baker Wetlands and the Burrough's Creek.

Cloudy the entire ride and raining for the first 70 minutes. It felt nice.

Note

Spent a few minutes on my lunch hour looking at the 2d Rerun map here:

https://www.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_15965...

I like how easy to read the map looks. The way the contours are drawn is really nice. I think that's common on Danish maps. I'm reminded of our local "Danish" map - West Campus as drawn by Ulrik.

The JWOC logo is pretty cool, too. I'm not sure Pink Socks would approve, but I like it.
