6 AM

run warm up/down 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: x-talon 190

seeing as it wasn't so hot after all, I actually did a warm-up. Probably not enough, but better than nothing.
7 AM

run (Snakes and Ladders trail) 1:14:55 [5] 15.06 km (4:58 / km) +705m 4:02 / km
shoes: x-talon 190

Well, it was nowhere near as hot as I'd feared. 41 degrees forecast, but felt like I needed a jumper when I got out of the car, as it was very windy and the early easterly was still cool.

Trotted around a little warm-up thinking about whether to change hydration and clothing plans, but decided to play it safe and go with the 2 bottle pack and no shirt. Getting cold wasn't going to be a problem even if it was cooler than expected.

After the quick loop of the carpark to string us out before the trail started, I was sitting in 5th, but two of the blokes in front had clearly started too quickly. I tried really hard to start comfortably, but the start of the first climb was pretty tough and I was finding it a bit of a struggle despite trying to go slow. I relaxed a bit once I realised that the guys in front weren't getting away, and the two guys in front that I didn't know I passed in the first 1500m.

Sat in 3rd about 50m behind TB for the next little while, with SS about 10-15 in front of me, but about 2/3 of the way up the first climb I moved to second, still feeling comfortable.

Closed up on TB just over the top of the first hill when he didn't see a tape, and then when the descent got steep, he slid out a couple of times and I went straight past. Had a healthy gap by the bottom of the hill, which was roughly 6km in and I was still feeling good.

The second climb looked brutal and I decided I'd be better off walking whenever it got too steep. This meant walking quite a bit of it and TB closed back up and drew level, but I could tell he was working much harder than me and he started walking just as he passed me. As the climb leveled out a bit in places I got running comfortably again and ran right through to the turnaround, by which time I was somewhere between 50 and 100m clear again and still not feeling toasted.

Went relatively hard back down the hill, knowing that I could hold the lead on the rocky descent without doing anything silly then faced the final climb. I ran the bottom section, then walked from about 1/3 of the way up to the log-over - a long way, but the hill was just that little bit too steep to run without destroying myself, and I was still leading as the hill started to flatten out.

Felt good getting moving again and seemed to have plenty in the tank, but a glance over the shoulder with about 3.5km to go told me TB had closed again. I picked up the effort a bit but he was still gaining. Fortunately, the climb at the start that had seemed so hard was steep and technical enough that I could stretch away again and I got to the end for my first win.

Happy days. Carrying the second drink bottle was a good move as it meant I wasn't reluctant to tip it over my head, which helped keep the temperature in the manageable zone. The waist strap on the pack is also much more comfortable.
