Note

So I got the replacement 305 from Garmin in the mail today, but I left the long wristband on there when I mailed it back and the one they sent me has a short one, which doesn't fit around my wrists at all. Any of you little people have your extra 305 long strap lying around that you want to mail me? I'll mail you back a snowball or something.

And on a somewhat related note, it looks like amazon is selling 405s for $140. Don't know if thats normal or super sale or for how long or whatnot.

Note

on a less related note, I think I just reserved plane tickets to Kazakhstan.

skate ski 1:26:18 [3] 21.15 km (4:05 / km) +505m 3:39 / km

Party ski with Jon and Jonis and everybody else in Truckee up at Auburn. It was sunny and warm and just about everybody was out there, so it turned into intervals of ski-really-hard-for-half-a-lap-until-you-stop-to-chat.

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 8.0 mi (15:00 / mi) +400m 12:59 / mi

Easy hike up the backyard mountains with the posse. Some snow on the ground, but pretty hot in the sun.

skate ski 54:03 [3] 13.14 km (4:07 / km) +347m 3:38 / km

Pre-turkey ski with Dan up at Auburn. They groomed the trails with just the snowmobile, so it scraped off the leaves and sticks from the windstorm and was actually really nice conditions. Also I finally took off the summer wax, which helped a wee bit.

dp intervals along the power lines. The latest storm sort of fizzled, but there's still plenty of snow in the woods.

Yay winter. Chasing Jonis around Auburn. So apparently the gigantic warehouse building they're building in the middle of the Boreal parking lot is going to be a year round freestyle snow park. Woot indoor-summer-ski-o.

skate ski 30:00 [1] 2.0 km (15:00 / km) +50m 13:20 / km

9 AM

run warm up/down 10 [2] 1.0 km (10 / km)

orienteering race 20:00 [3] *** 3.82 km (5:14 / km) +188m 4:12 / km
spiked:22/25c

GG Sprint 4, McLauren Park
Moved up again, so back with Jonis, Beat, and Joseph. A couple controls then a crazy butterfly mess in the middle of the course, with one long and one short leg. Beat and Joseph dropped us right away, and Jonis and I had different forks, but did the long loop together. The map was busy in the center with numbers and circles and duplicate controls (and it was raining), so it was hard to follow the course by looking at the lines. I was mostly reading ahead by searching for the next control number on the map and then just running there. But I got to 14, looked at the map to see which control I was at so I could find the next number, and the 16 number was pretty close to the 14 circle, so I read that and ran straight to 17. My bad. I made up some time on Jonis there though.
12 PM

orienteering race 18:07 [3] *** 3.55 km (5:07 / km) +124m 4:21 / km
spiked:25/25c

GG Sprint 5, McLauren Park
The dsq in the morning meant I got relegated down a bracket, so in the finals heat with Carol, Francois, and Matej. Francois had bailed to catch a plane, and Carol was trying to pull the tired excuse, so Matej and I were back and forth for the whole thing. Snuck ahead of him by blind luck on the wrong-side-of-the-house control, and held him off until the finish. Ended up 9th for the overall tournament.

Awesome weekend, the four-person mass start bracket format is super fun, since it naturally sorts you into people your speed so most of the races end up head to head and tight. A few logistical problems within the timing and start times, but nothing that actually detracted from the racing. The maps were all fine and the courses were excellent. 106 controls in a weekend, not too bad...

run warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

orienteering race 18:51 [3] *** 3.68 km (5:07 / km) +74m 4:39 / km
spiked:20/22c

Golden Gate Park sprint #1, WRE
The start sortof caught me by surprise, as there wasn't a clock and they weren't too loud about the times, so I wasn't really ready for it. Took a couple controls to get it together but then ok after that.
11 AM

orienteering race 16:38 [3] *** 3.39 km (4:54 / km) +86m 4:21 / km
spiked:17/19c

Golden Gate sprint #2
Lots of time to get ready for this one, in a four group with Jonis. We were back and forth for most of it, made a couple little mistakes here and there, and he outran me into the last couple controls.
3 PM

run warm up/down 10 [2] 1.0 km (10 / km)

orienteering race 19:01 [3] *** 3.8 km (5:00 / km) +143m 4:13 / km
spiked:14/15c

GG sprint #3, Point Lobos
Jonis and I moved up from our heat, so I was in a group of four with Francois, Rex, and Zbynek. Together for a couple controls, we lost Zbynek on the climb to 4, then Francois took the deadend route to 7 and Rex and I never saw him again. Rex and I were together for the rest of it, I got ahead a couple times but mostly just tried to hang on, and finished just behind him.

Note

Through the snow down to Oakland to crash at Jonathan's place, with a stop in Davis to pick up norwegian Toril for the weekend. Managed to not get arrested.

Wednesday Nov 16, 2011 #

4 PM

run 35:45 [3] 3.6 mi (9:56 / mi) +192m 8:31 / mi

Down in Reno to get new tires (studs!) and then pick up Carol, but I had a little bit of daylight in between to kill so I got out for a little jog around Keystone Canyon. Pretty cool place, lots of trails everywhere. Might be sweet for mtb-o, if such a thing existed. Got dark about halfway through and I started tripping on stuff, so I turned back down, but the bottom of the canyon turned out to be nice smooth singletrack.

Going to mail the garmin back to garmin for the $80 factory special, but I also got the replacement logger today so I tried that one out. Didn't break yet.

2 PM

run 1:28:00 [3] 9.8 mi (8:59 / mi) +315m 8:10 / mi

Run with Jonis through Prosser. Not so much snow down there at all, and dry for most of the trails. Route looked a little like this.

Saturday Nov 12, 2011 #

4 PM

run 1:04:18 [3] 11.1 km (5:48 / km) +300m 5:06 / km

Run up around the top of TD. The garmin may have finally bit it. It recorded everything ok, but it won't connect to the computer, I just get usb errors. oops.

12 PM

road bike 1:28:32 [3] 22.67 mi (15.4 mph) +427m

Finally fixed the bike pump so I could get out for a road ride. Pretty good, if chilly, with some bonus postholing to get through the snow on the other side of the lake. And then a couple minutes digging for a pointy rock to get the ice out of my cleats.

On the last part of the hill before home some terrible terrible noises started coming from the drive train end of the world, at first I was hoping it was just the broken pedal bearings (which I've still forgotten to replace), but based on the jarring it was sending into the frame every rotation I think it might be more in the bottom brackety department. It got home fine though, and then it was too cold to investigate further. Maybe it'll just go away before spring.

Thursday Nov 10, 2011 #

3 PM

run 46:24 [3] 4.79 mi (9:41 / mi) +173m 8:42 / mi

Quick and easy around TD. Ribs feel a lot better - breathing isn't a problem anymore, running is ok, and even pushups are fine. Sneezing, situps, and backing up the car are still unpleasant activities.

Monday Nov 7, 2011 #

3 PM

run 1:04:42 [3] 5.9 mi (10:57 / mi) +276m 9:34 / mi

Easy run down the creek a bit trompsing through the snow, then up the mountain along the fire roads for bit.

Saturday Nov 5, 2011 #

4 PM

run 25:54 intensity: (19 @1) + (50 @2) + (2:17 @3) + (22:28 @4) 3.26 mi (7:57 / mi) +66m 7:29 / mi
ahr:152 max:161

Short run around the roads with Jonis. Snowing a bit, and the roads were all icy and slick. Maybe 8" from yesterday, and about the same coming tonight.

Thursday Nov 3, 2011 #

5 PM

run 59:07 intensity: (52 @1) + (7:27 @2) + (42:56 @3) + (7:52 @4) 5.63 mi (10:30 / mi) +139m 9:45 / mi
ahr:138 max:164

Run exploring some new trails down the hill a ways. Found a bonus sungletrack, then along some fire roads for a bit. Then it got dark and started snowing, so I finally managed to convince Carol to turn around.

mtn bike 29:17 [3] 4.58 mi (9.4 mph) +110m

Easy mtb around TD. Fairly windy out, and regardless of what the thermometer said, the afternoon ice on the trails seemed to imply it was chilly out. Ribs hurt a lot, though I can't tell if its better or worse than yesterday. Mostly painful when coughing or twisting or bouncing down bumpy mtb trails.
