XC skating race (Gatineau Loppet) 4:52:54 [3] 50.0 km (5:51 / km) +1056m 5:18 / km

Second 50km race.
Had to get my first two done in one weekend, right?

It was the same exact course, so I knew what to expect.

I kind of panicked on the start, for two reasons. One, I had no idea if I would be able to finish it (I could stop at the cutoff at 30km if need be). Two, I realized that I hadn't skated since last time I went to Gatineau three weeks ago, and I didn't even skate that much that day. So yeah, oops.

The first 25km were miserable for me. Maybe partially because I was worried about the hilly sections coming up, I'm not sure. I was mainly being pushed by my high expectations of myself, and the fact that I didn't want to give up or not make it.

Then I got to the hilly part where I started suffering yesterday. That's where I started to enjoy the race. Maybe it was because on skate, even though I was still excruciatingly slow uphill, I could at least glide a tiny bit, and I was actually resting here and there. That 5km long hill after the 30km mark? It was nothing. Well, no, it was definitely something. But compared to yesterday, it was nothing.

Maybe it was because I started talking to myself. There was nobody around me, so I had to entertain myself somehow.

Then the last 15km was SO FUN. It was like yesterday, because the downhills were super fun and fast (probably even faster today). But at the same time, I could actually go uphill faster than a walking pace, and I somehow had more energy then in the beginning of today's race? Whatever the reason, it was so darn fun.

AND MY FINISH OH MY GOD
I was trying to do 1:1 poling technique (I have no clue if I'm calling it correctly but oh well) and it actually worked, I was flying, and I swear I was never able to do that technique as well as I did in the finish. I can even see it on the photos, I look like a darn professional xD

Now I can see why my parents like skiing in Gatineau, both in the race and recreationally. I guess I just need the challenge of distance to actually enjoy it.
