Knee is improving with increased motion. Still some fluid on the kneecap. Went to work today instead of working from home. Hoping it progresses just as well.

Note
slept:7.5 (injured)

Significant improvement in the mobility of my knee. Looks like inflammation is on its way out.

Doctor confirmed my assumption of bursitis. He also said there was some additional swelling. He took some of the fluid out and gave me a cortisone shot. This made my knee really sore. Hoping it feels better again tomorrow.

Thinking a solid week of complete rest (lower body) and then I can ease back into things. Fingers crossed.

We got to Hopi Camp and were told Tecnu2 still hadn't arrived and we still had a CP advantage on SRF. Tecnu1 was in the lead. This was good news. We had been dissappointed at our pace because Joel was having some leg troubles and Kristen was trying to push as hard as possible. Julia and I were trying to do as much work as possible to keep the team moving as fast as possible.

We moved quickly through transition hoping we could clean the next section and keep our CP lead over SRF. The first few points were close to camp and I accidentally got tripped up in a branch. I fell on my knee. Julia said she heard the crack it made. I was worried what this might lead to. I took a minute and then grabbed the branch to use as a walking stick and kept moving on.

We took the next section slow. Mostly walking with occasional sections that I tried to shuffle. In addition we had forgotten to get water and were all just about out and moving further away from water. We were about to attack the last optional and decided it was too risky to make our 12pm cutoff on the water. As we prepared to leave for the water I looked at my knee and it was twice as big as it was supposed to be. I tried to walk and couldn't bend my knee. I then told the team that I was done. There was now way I could race for 2 mroe hours let alone 24. I was already fearing spending 2 or 3 hours in the boats.

We walked down to the bigger road and waited to get picked up. On our way we passed a garbage dump in the woods that had a recliner. I was tempted to relax but the team kept me moving. Doug, and the camera crew showed up in short time to take us back to Hidden Valley.

Dissappointed we had to drop with things looking up but nothing we could do. Save it for next race. Time to heal... again.

The race started with a monster trek with lots of optional CPs. RDs said they didn't expect teams to clear the course but the mileage seemed low to me so we decided we would only drop points if we were worried about cutoffs or it the points would require significant amounts of time.

Both Tecnu teams started fast we hung closer to the SRF team to CP1. We then worked our way to CP2 gathering some optionals. There were a couple small route choices to be made. I had several trail maps to aid in the decision. At CP2 we were still just a bit behind Tecnu2 and SRF.

We made what I thought was an interesting route choice to gather the set of optionals between 2 and 3. It was significantly less climbing and less distance. Not sure what other teams did on this but felt it could have made a significant difference.

Not sure of the placing and times after the trek but I am pretty sure we came in 4th. We were told that SRF had skipped 1 CP.

This was a long bike that started out pretty familiar making our way south to Ohiopyle. We left Seven Springs by going through the old airport instead of Blue Hole. Again limited time and distance but we risked finding the trail. We had a little trouble with the trail but still saved some time.

The next CP was a CP along a creek and an unmapped trail. We came to this section just as it was getting dark. We spotted the CP easily and then started looking for a way out. The first trail we were to pass wasn't visible and looked to be very steep so I figured the effort to get up wasn't going to be worth it and try for the next trail.

The trail turned into a well prepped logging road and turned around (North) and went up the hill. I didn't see the road that was supposed to go South (the preferred direction) so I took what we were being given. I then couldn't find the next trail so we ended up climbing and riding further. We eventually made our way back to the trail we missed. It ended up being rougher than expected and dissappearing at one point. We were fighting briars. I was cursing our troubles and we finally found our way out. Looking back there were definitely better options than what we executed but not sure there was much I could have done.

The next bit of the ride took us to the rail trail which we rode for about 15 miles and struggled to stay awake. We then rode some areas I haven't been to before and made our way to Hopi camp just as the sun was coming back up.

Spent all my time last night preparing food and gear for the race. Took about 4 hours including the short trip to the grocery store and I left my rice krispie treats at the self checkout :-(

By the time I finished it was already the bedtime I had set in order to get some extra sleep. Instead I ate some ice cream watched some TdF and then went to sleep. Might be able to catch some z's on the drive up tonight.

Quick run on my "TT" route from McLean. Stopped for a potty break as I got on the trail. Several trees still down across the trail.

Came across another runner along the trail and couldn't keep up with him. This made me realize how out of shape I really am. He turned off the trail shortly after but I was sturggling to keep the pace up after that.

I did this run 2.5 minutes faster in March minus the obstacles and the humidity at about the same effort level.

Ocourse 1 - Pretty smooth. 1 mistake that we had to attack 3 times. Another point we missed due to lack of communication.
Ocourse 2 - Baker was spent. I was overheated at the start from towing Baker on the bike. Tried to cool down in the Potomac but the water temp was 90+. I recovered but Baker didn't recover until the last KM. He was on toe whenever we weren't in the woods.

Didn't really have a map. Dima gave us a GPS to make sure we were going the right way. It was difficult to use it to verify our route.

Swimming race 15:00 [4]

About as close to swimming as I usually get.

Paddling race (Canoe) 1:48:00 [4] 8.25 mi (4.6 mph)

With single blade paddles and bikes in the boat.
9 AM

Adventure Racing race 10:20:00 [0] 44.9 mi (13:49 / mi) +2779ft 13:03 / mi

Vetting Calleva Race Course with Baker. We made some mistakes but ran the first half of the course real well. The course was good but I can't post anything specific since the race has yet to occur.

It was hot, I think HI100+. It rained about 7 hours in and cooled us off a little. Water in the Potomac was very hot so we could only cool off in the creeks. Baker had trouble in the heat (as usual) so I did quite a bit of towing. This was good practice for next weekend (Toby not racing).

Parked at Happyland campground and did a loop on some of the trails (S Valley Trail and High Meadow Trail). Carried a map with me since I didn't know the trails. I ran in this area once before for an Omeet. Ran slow at times to keep track of my location and look for trails.

It was super humid (95F/DP75/HI105). Baxter joined me for his last run. We stopped twice to jump into Quantico Creek and cool off. He drank some as well. It was 5-10 degrees cooler in the forest.

I had hoped to do a slightly longer loop but didn't have the time and it was a little too hot to do much more anyway. Baxter did well for his last run.
12 PM

Mountain Biking (ST) 1:10:43 intensity: (44 @0) + (35 @1) + (20:34 @2) + (41:05 @3) + (7:45 @4) 11.35 mi (9.6 mph) +1086ft

Rode the new trails at Fountainhead. The work they have been doing here is really noticeable. The trails are in excellent shape. I did one complete (long) loop. I would have loved to do a second but I had no more time. Caught myself taking it easy at times because the trail just kept you moving.

Temps were hot (99F/DP65/HI104) but it wasn't too bad in the woods as long as I was moving. Plus on the back end of the loop there was a nice breeze coming off the river. The trails were empty. I think the heat scared everyone away. It was a great day to ride there.

My FR and bike computer were very different (2 mi). I don't think the FR can handle MTBing with lots of turns, high speed, and under tree cover.

At least the house had time to cool off yesterday so I was able to sleep through the night. They are not planning to restore power until tonight. It's gonna get hot again today (100F/DP70).

When we got power back yesterday I thought I might ride today. I hesitated with the temps and decided to take the car in for service and just ride from there. When the power went out schedule had to change again to accomodate Baxter.

Took the ride easy so I didn't sweat too much. Felt good to work the legs riding again. It's been a week.

Power is back on, again. Hoping it stays on this time.

ahr:149 max:168 shoes: Answer Impact MTB

Had the opportunity to elave work early so I did and spent some extra time on the bike before I picked up the car. It wasn't quite as hot as I was expecting (97F/DP65). Did some looping around on the roads trying to get as many long stretches as possible. Did some riding on my old commuter route.

Kept the pace pretty easy so I didn't overheat. Felt comfortable.

ahr:159 max:180 shoes: Brooks Cascadia 7

Our power was restored around noon so I left work in time to drop Baxter off at the house, turn on the AC and drop the car in McLean for KT.

I ran home from McLean doing the whole western section of the Pimmit Run Trail. It has been a while since I have ran this since I haven't been running much. Again there were several trees that had fallen. Many of which had been cut and cleared already. Only 3 times did I have to run into the woods and around. The rest of the time I could run through.

I was pretty happy with my pace considering the shape I am in, the heat (99F/DP70), and the condition of the trail. Probably worked a little harder for that pace than I'd like but thats whats gonna get me there. Carried a hand bottle to fight the heat. Wouldn't have been able to keep the pace any longer with all the water I was putting in my stomach.

First time wearing the Cascadias. They definitely have a nice fit and tread. They still have a little more support and stiffness than I want. I almost rolled my ankle when I started running through some grassy areas right off the bat. I got a little more comfortable in them as I ran. Left foot is bothering me a little bit though. May need to go back to the Asics :(

Trail Running 1:14:00 [3] ***** 6.8 mi (10:53 / mi) +284ft 10:28 / mi
shoes: INOV8 Roclite 295

Went running with Baxter. Tried to get out before it got too hot for either of us to run. Was 80 when we started and 90 when we finished. Could tell Baxter was really feeling the heat but he made it.

Battery died on the FR since I don't have any power to charge it. Used past runs to determine length.

Went to Langley since it has been a while and its the best place for Baxter to run off leash. The trails were much more overgrown than I am used to. I even lost track of the trail in two spots.

There was also a lot of deadfall across the trails. A lot of the time it was so much that it made it very difficult to even go around. Not sure if it will get cleaned up since the trails are hardly used. Maybe sometime without Baxter I can do a little work as I am running.

Felt the heat a little myself. I have also not been running much and can't keep the pace I'd like to. Enjoyed running the trails though and hopefully I can keep it up more into the summer.

Didn't sleep well without power. No air circulation and temps in the 80's overnight.

Note

90 degree temps again. Dew point around 70. Still no power.

Had a nice training session planned for the afternoon with Dan. After taking several showers in the morning just to stay cool I decided to cancel the training and KT and I went to the mall for some respite and a movie.

When we returned home the power was back on. Turned on the AC got some stuff done, relaxed and watched the Tour.
