Sunday Feb 25 #

Walking 4:00:00 [2] 4.8 km (50:00 / km) +403m 35:13 / km
shoes: Altra Olympus 5

Mt Victoria. A gem of a walk, little known outside Tasmania. Challenging weather at the top with howling wind, drizzle and a few unprotected climbing moves on greasy rock.

Friday Feb 23 #

Walking 3:30:00 [2] 3.2 km (1:05:37 / km) +265m 46:25 / km
shoes: Altra Olympus 5

Sandbanks Tier. Looks a short and easy Abel. It would be if the trail was mostly on scree with the regular cryptic track through dense scrub bands. A good navigational challenge. We saved ourselves once by referring to the Google Map satellite view and determining where the correct scree lead was to be found. Satisfying views at the top of a part of the central plateau hard to access by any other means.

Thursday Feb 22 #

Walking 4:00:00 [2] 10.6 km (22:38 / km) +717m 16:55 / km
shoes: Altra Olympus 5

Mt Farrell near Tullah. Not an Abel, but a longer climb than many Abe;ls due to the low starting altitude. Great views of Mt Murchison and the Murchison River lakes.

Wednesday Feb 21 #

Walking 4:00:00 [2] 6.0 km (40:00 / km) +350m 30:58 / km
shoes: Altra Olympus 5

Failed attempt on Mt Geikie the hard way. We were required to pick "the obvious lead" for the final climb. We got it a little wrong, and though we recovered our route onto the easier ground, had to pull the pin due to time running out.

Tuesday Feb 20 #

Walking 3:30:00 [2] 11.0 km (19:05 / km) +408m 16:06 / km
shoes: Altra Olympus 5

Mt Beecroft. First Abel for the trip. A gentle start as a break on the drive to Queenstown.
