Felt better throughout the day.

Hiking 30:00 [3] 1.0 km (30:00 / km)

Got my exercise today hiking 500m down toward corner of Washburn ("Mini 44, as we locals call it because the fast and heavy traffic) and Dry Bridge to see what the accident was about that closed my road. I had to beg passage from the police on my way home from the other direction.

Car vs. cyclist. From what I could see, there wasn't much left of the bike, no front end damage on the small sedan visible from my distance, no personnel around other than police and firemen. Must have happened about 3:15, about the time an ambulance sped by me from other direction when I was on my way to the hardware store. Dry road, sun and shadows, humid.

I don't cycle on Washburn - nervy and S can't abide the thought. I've cautioned Charlie and Walk before about this area.

Swimming 30:00 [3]

Giving up waiting for suitable air conditions (cooler, drier, bug-less-ier) so I can enjoy being in the woods again, I've joined the Y and am taking up swimming again.

First workout in a pool in over three years:
(measured in yards)
300 FBBr (free, back, breast; one length each; repeat)
100 F kick
100 F pull
100 F
100 B
300 FBBr

Total 1000. Half my old usual but goal today was just to get wet and limber up.

Form in F and B is still good, but "OMG", cried my back, shoulders and arms. Br has always been my weakest stroke but I do it for the flexibility. Now it serves to stretch and move the troublesome right groin and ITB. Will have ibuprofen for lunch.

Overall, very satisfactory. Mentally and physically.

Note

Not much recent exercise to report, but there are a few notables in the past two weeks.

One was zip lining in forests and along deep, narrow river canyons in Costa Rica. Quite aerobic, i.e., got the heart pumping fast with excitement. Crossing the river canyon on narrow swing bridges and swinging across Tarzan-style on a rope were included for variety. Longest zip leg was one kilometer in a cloud forest with visibility only 300m. Weird to watch guy ahead of me (my son) disappear into the cloud. Some segments of these adventure treks involved climbing straight up canyon walls on steel rungs sunk into the cliff face. The four grandkids thought this was all very neato.

Endurance training included a 6 km hike along well groomed trails crossing the continental divide in the Monteverde rain forest.

Another event was back home: some calisthenics that a small Chinese girl in contortion class would find ordinary -- replacing the faucet in the kitchen sink. A bit more challenging for us big galloots. But using exercise steppers to raise the floor to the level of the cabinet floor let me lie flat on my back and all was well. The hard part was removing the old fixture. The new, better designed faucet was easy to install.

Hiking 33:10 [3] 2.17 km (15:17 / km) +42m 13:56 / km
shoes: 2016 Merrills

Rare circumstances (cool air, low humidity, no appointments, no rain) let me get back into walking alone in the local woods. It's been awhile.

Went for a leisurely stroll in Town Forest for a short loop to test the right foot, ankle and leg muscles. X-ray a few weeks ago showed no foot/ankle fracture but top of foot started complaining after 25 minutes. Length of loop was just right.
