I seized the rare opportunity to escape domestic duties for a few hours and dashed down to Huntington SP to do the Winter Series Brown course. Cloudless sky, about 28 to 32 F, great visibility in the woods, wet spots varied from muddy to crunchy.

Navigation was pretty much bee line. I concentrated on: not looking at the map unless stock still to prevent tripping; staying in contact with the map; not running or jogging (adverse to falling and mindful that right hip ball is artificial).

No big goofs, pretty much on target. Some flags were visible from afar but others were nicely tucked out of sight behind the cited (and sighted) feature. At #3 I walked right by the flag within five feet but looked left and forward instead of hooking rightward around the tall boulder. After proceeding 5m ahead and turning around, I spotted the flag. Going to #5 was easy enough following the reentrant up past all the cairns but the final climb was a bit puzzling but the flag was easy enough to find once I got to the top and peeking s. and e. around the knoll as the clue sheet suggested.

One small goof was leaving #5 for #6: I went s.w. but had the map oriented 180. The topography didn't look right and once I discovered my bad grip on the map, the trek went smoothly. But for wearing gloves and figuring fishing my iPhone out of my buttoned pocket would take too long, I would have paused to photograph the wonderful boulders and cliffs lying n.w. of #6. Fabulous place. I also recalled that on my last trip through Huntington I had
discovered the gorgeous glade at the bare rock peak about 100m up and east from #6. I should find a warm late spring day to carry my hiker's hammock and linger in that area between morning and afternoon O events.

My route to the Finish started out sloppy and I got confused as I descended. I'll blame my weary cold eyes that teared up, as well as my cataracts, for not being able to decifer the map well enough in that area where several trails are accompanied by bracking stone walls.

My route.
