Orienteering (Pwll Du) 1:00:37 [5] 6.48 km (9:21 / km) +130m 8:30 / km

First terrain orienteering "race" since June. Not sure how I would get on but only running green and confident I would be able to walk around if necessary.

Managed some running, though not quick and generally downhill, or where there was water. Resolved to get wet early on so I wouldn't feel the need to keep my feet dry and opportunity arose within 50m of the start.

Didn't like the look of terrain straight line to 1 so went up then down. Hadn't expected it to be so easy to find. Long way around on 4 as didn't want to cross too many contours and tire out so early on. Route into 4 from SE was always going to be a bit rough but made it through. Worst was crossing the gully as the rocks were all very slippery.

Only mistake on 5 as distracted by person on other course, and didn't trust Vanessa to be going the right way to my control! Quite a lot of walking out from this even though terrain better - uphill. Good line though for the path I was aiming for.

Crossed the valley 7-8 about 50m north of where I had wanted to, but knew as I was doing it. Meant more time in the rough going around to control. Very surprised to catch Reuben here as he passed me at 1 and I'd not seen him since 3.

Last section was pretty rough with lots of sharp ups and downs so I had to walk most of it. Reuben passed for final time after 10, having jumped onto the Brown train that shared most of our controls. I had a big slide on wet slope so not able to keep up - and had to find 14 for myself - which I did quickly, but didn't look like what I expected it to be so took a while to commit to going for it. Final section along path was fun as was quite wet so good opportunity to run throw and splash (even) slower people.

A bit disappointed to miss the hour, but beaten only by Reuben on the course is pretty good. And as he messed up 8 by so much, makes my time look a lot better than it was.

Providing coaching support for UBOC/BUMC training day at Gwaelod and then Llangynidr. Not a lot that I needed to do other than help get them thinking as they were going around. Dan and Sophie going a great job leading the sessions and ensuring everyone was engaged.

Did more on Llangynidr as it”s flatter. Cloud had come down by now and cold in wind and occasional drizzle. As it was Bath’s turn to collect in at the end, and they are generally less experienced, we decided it would be a good idea if I went out to make sure we didn’t lose anyone.

With their “best” and got the 4 furthest flags, practicing a lot of skills on the way. First flag was 2k away on the edge of the map (nobody else went to it today!), was worried that we had somehow overshot badly - but did pretty well. Last three all shorter and needed less guidance. Would have liked the map to have all the rocky ground on it! A hell of a lot more physical than I remember - much of the time in knee to thigh deep vegetation, soft ground. Really good practice for me physically and mentally - and definitely tiring towards the end (and it was starting to get dark)

Around 20 students out, plus me and Matt in the morning, and a good group that seemed to be enjoying it. It’s good to see UBOC so much better than when I was running it!

Hopefully not too tired for tomorrow.

Orienteering - MapRun (Llandaf MapRun) 41:30 [5] 6.86 km (6:03 / km) +55m 5:49 / km
slept:6.0 weight:79kg (sick) shoes: Nike Pegasus 38

Had hoped to keep it flat today but course planning meant there was not a lot suitable for anyone recovering from severe illness.

S-27-29-8-20-24-12-19-3-15-21-29-28-F. 250 points

4 mins on, 1 min off until Radyr bridge, but was a lot of a struggle from there on after the small incline. Walking much more on sections I should be able to run. Consequentially, had to replan route to double back via 29 as going to the other bridge would meant I would have had to rush (though I probably just had enough time to go via 16 for extra 20 points).

Caught out by a mapped path being hidden behind electric cables on the map so messed up 19. Then opted to take the path to 3 as never been down it, and got caught by an extra unmapped path off it 100m earlier. It was more uphill so I was finding walking hard enough here.
